{"id":1400,"date":"2009-11-27T07:49:35","date_gmt":"2009-11-27T14:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/?p=1400"},"modified":"2019-09-18T12:05:38","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T19:05:38","slug":"what-people-say-after-a-firefox-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/2009\/11\/27\/what-people-say-after-a-firefox-update\/","title":{"rendered":"What People Say After a Firefox Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/2009\/11\/10\/what-people-say-after-installing-firefox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">last time<\/a>, let\u2019s start with the punch line:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People love Firefox!<\/li>\n<li>People are also notably frustrated with two experiences \u2013 (1) Firefox crashing too often, and (2) Firefox not saving their settings (e.g., home page)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These insights were arrived at via <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/2009\/10\/08\/user-outreach-coming-to-mozilla-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our current user outreach efforts<\/a>.\u00a0 When people visit the Firefox <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/firefox\/3.5.4\/whatsnew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cWhatsnew\u201d page<\/a> \u2013 which users automatically hit after each Firefox update \u2013 they have the option of providing feedback and comments.\u00a0 More than 16,000 people have been kind enough to provide feedback over the past six weeks.\u00a0 If you\u2019re curious how this works from the user\u2019s perspective, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/en-US\/firefox\/3.5.4\/whatsnew\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> to the Fx3.5.4 whatsnew page and then click on the orange feedback button.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a breakdown of what has recently been on the mind of users:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1402\" title=\"whatsnew_pie_chart\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/whatsnew_pie_chart.png\" alt=\"whatsnew_pie_chart\" width=\"507\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/whatsnew_pie_chart.png 507w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/whatsnew_pie_chart-300x260.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We previously <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/2009\/11\/10\/what-people-say-after-installing-firefox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shared analysis of comments<\/a> from people visiting the Firstrun (installation) page, and the chart above looks somewhat similar.\u00a0 The fact that so many people made a point of saying something positive is amazing!<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, there is one negative item that we first took note of last time.\u00a0 A significant number of people left a comment along the lines of, <strong>\u201cwhy does this page open every time I open Firefox?\u00a0 Please get rid of it.\u00a0 I previously set my home page and Firefox won\u2019t save the setting.\u201d<\/strong> On the plus side, we have already taken this insight and turned it into action.\u00a0 The Firefox team has prioritized a fix via <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=495735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bug 495735<\/a>, and it should ship it in the next release of Firefox.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, there was one other group of people who were particularly frustrated.\u00a0 For each of the groups in the pie chart above, we can also look at their average satisfaction score (scale of 1 to 5):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1403\" title=\"whatsnew_satisfaction\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/whatsnew_satisfaction.png\" alt=\"whatsnew_satisfaction\" width=\"424\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/whatsnew_satisfaction.png 424w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/11\/whatsnew_satisfaction-300x89.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 424px) 100vw, 424px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the crashiness of Firefox is a known issue, and making Firefox less crashy has been a top priority for the Mozilla community in recent months.\u00a0 Given our current focus in this area, I would guess that if we rerun this same user outreach program a few months from now, we\u2019d see that green pie slice either dramatically shrunk or completely eliminated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like last time, let\u2019s start with the punch line: People love Firefox!
