{"id":351,"date":"2009-01-30T17:23:18","date_gmt":"2009-01-31T00:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/?p=351"},"modified":"2019-09-18T12:07:08","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T19:07:08","slug":"will-we-eventually-see-a-firefox-super-bowl-ad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/2009\/01\/30\/will-we-eventually-see-a-firefox-super-bowl-ad\/","title":{"rendered":"Will We Eventually See a Firefox Super Bowl Ad?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we&#8217;re just a couple days away from the Super Bowl, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.giantspatula.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Rolnitzky<\/a> (one of our brilliant marketers) and I wanted to go through the fun exercise of having a point\/counterpoint discussion around the possibility of Firefox commercial debuting during a future game.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll outline a few points below in favor of such a possibility, and then respond to David\u2019s well articulated thoughts (<em>coming soon in an update below<\/em>).<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Before all else, any effort and decision making around a Super Bowl commercial would be community enabled and driven by the Mozilla community.\u00a0 In other words, something similar in spirit to the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/Firefox-fans-to-take-campaign-to-NY-Times\/2100-1032_3-5419504.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NYTimes ad<\/a> for the <a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.mozillazine.org\/asa\/archives\/007103.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Firefox 1 launch<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Firefox is a mainstream brand (one of the biggest in the world) and would benefit as much as any other brand from a mainstream ad channel.\u00a0 In other words, we\u2019re not <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/22900551\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sales Genie<\/a> with a niche product or service.<\/li>\n<li>The story of the process behind our ad and of our community decision to have an ad would generate more than $10 million in press.\u00a0 Go Daddy <a href=\"[http:\/\/adage.com\/article?article_id=134081]\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">generated this return<\/a> during a couple recent years.<\/li>\n<li>Production costs would be zero.\u00a0 We\u2019d be able to use an already produced ad from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firefoxflicks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Firefox Flicks<\/a>.\u00a0 My personal favorite is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Avk5NDEJMtg&amp;eurl=http:\/\/www.firefoxflicks.com\/backstage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daredevil<\/a> (below).<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Avk5NDEJMtg&amp;eurl=http:\/\/www.firefoxflicks.com\/backstage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-355\" title=\"flicks_daredevil\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2009\/01\/flicks_daredevil.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"342\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Retention marketing has consistently been a challenge for Mozilla.\u00a0 There are limited opportunities of this size and scale for us to remind existing users that they have a choice beyond the blue e.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> David Rolnitzky has a comprehensive counterpoint <a href=\"http:\/\/www.giantspatula.com\/?p=161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 I actually agree with most of what he says, but if you&#8217;re interested in a rebuttal, Justin Scott <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.fligtar.com\/2009\/01\/31\/from-underneath-the-giant-spatula\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">entered the conversation<\/a> taking on David&#8217;s points and supporting the idea of a Firefox Super Bowl commercial.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As we&#8217;re just a couple days away from the Super Bowl, David Rolnitzky (one of our brilliant marketers) and I wanted to go through the fun exercise of having a point\/counterpoint discussion around the possibility of Firefox commercial debuting during &hellip;
