{"id":58,"date":"2008-07-07T10:22:52","date_gmt":"2008-07-07T17:22:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/?p=58"},"modified":"2019-09-18T12:07:12","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T19:07:12","slug":"firefox-as-a-leading-brand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/2008\/07\/07\/firefox-as-a-leading-brand\/","title":{"rendered":"Firefox as a Leading Brand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We recently looked at <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/2008\/06\/23\/firefox-3-launch-affects-web-traffic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the spike in activity<\/a> of Firefox related search terms on Download Day.\u00a0 Following up on that post, I wanted to find other interesting ways to put the launch into perspective.\u00a0 For example, looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/trends?q=firefox&amp;ctab=0&amp;geo=all&amp;date=all&amp;sort=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Firefox&#8221; on Google Trends<\/a> shows us that traffic of firefox was off the charts during launch \u2013 something on the order of 2X what occurred with the Firefox 2 launch in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Pushing this perspective a bit further, I thought it would be interesting to see how both the Firefox 3 launch and the historical trend stack up against other products and organizations.\u00a0 While there are a lot of different ways to go about this, I took the top three &#8220;best global brands&#8221; according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/magazine\/toc\/07_32\/B40450732bestbrands.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">latest report<\/a> from Interbrand and BusinessWeek.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/magazine\/toc\/07_32\/B40450732bestbrands.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wiki.mozilla.org\/images\/7\/72\/Brand_bw.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"455\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Plugging &#8220;Firefox&#8221;, &#8220;Coca Cola&#8221;, &#8220;Microsoft&#8221;, and &#8220;IBM&#8221; into Google Trends returned the following:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/trends?q=firefox%2C+coca+cola%2C+microsoft%2C+ibm&amp;ctab=0&amp;geo=all&amp;date=all&amp;sort=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/wiki.mozilla.org\/images\/a\/a1\/Brand_trends2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice a trend here?\u00a0 Two brands show a downward trend and one shows an upward trend over time.\u00a0 While this isn&#8217;t exactly a fair or rigorous brand analysis, it is cool to see Firefox trending so well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We recently looked at the spike in activity of Firefox related search terms on Download Day.\u00a0 Following up on that post, I wanted to find other interesting ways to put the launch into perspective.\u00a0 For example, looking at &#8220;Firefox&#8221; on &hellip; <a class=\"go\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/2008\/07\/07\/firefox-as-a-leading-brand\/\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":60,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[101],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/58"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/60"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=58"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/58\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=58"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=58"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=58"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
