{"id":71,"date":"2008-08-21T11:42:18","date_gmt":"2008-08-21T18:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/?p=71"},"modified":"2019-09-18T12:07:11","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T19:07:11","slug":"a-first-look-at-the-uninstall-survey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/2008\/08\/21\/a-first-look-at-the-uninstall-survey\/","title":{"rendered":"A First Look at the Uninstall Survey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The world of Mozilla includes many Firefox related feedback mechanisms.\u00a0 Crash reporting, bugzilla and spreadfirefox.com represent a few such examples.\u00a0 Another feedback mechanism is the <a href=\"https:\/\/survey.mozilla.com\/results\/add\/?application=firefox&amp;ua=2.0.0.6\">Firefox uninstall survey<\/a>.\u00a0 When a Firefox user (Windows XP only) decides to uninstall their browser, they\u2019re asked if they want to complete a survey during the uninstall process.<\/p>\n<p>Often a user is merely temporarily uninstalling before immediately reinstalling.\u00a0 However, in some cases a user enjoys a seemingly less than optimal experience with Firefox, and in these cases, it behooves us a community to figure out what\u2019s going on and if there are true pain points that the user is experiencing (and perhaps that we\u2019re not aware of).<\/p>\n<p>Since its implementation in March of 2006, well over a million users have visited the survey.\u00a0 Together, they have submitted over 170,000 responses.\u00a0 In a typical day, we might see something in the ballpark of 4,000 visitors, 150 responses, and 40 comments.<\/p>\n<p>Given both the magnitude and value of the resulting information, I\u2019ve been dedicating part of the summer to analyzing and interpreting the data.\u00a0 This blog post is the first in a short series.<\/p>\n<p>So what do the uninstallers have to say?\u00a0 There are two particularly interesting results, the first of which is plotted in the chart below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2008\/08\/fx-2-intended-use.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-74\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2008\/08\/fx-2-intended-use.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"316\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the release of Firefox 2, the percent of users intending to fully replace their previous web browser declined rapidly&#8211;from 59 to 31 percent in just one year.\u00a0 The figures for the first month of the Firefox 3 uninstall survey are very similar; 58% of respondents intended Firefox 3 to fully replace their previous browser.<\/p>\n<p>The second result concerns how well each country is represented by visits (not responses) to the uninstall survey.\u00a0 The charts below illustrate the degree to which each of the top eight survey-visiting countries is overrepresented.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2008\/08\/share-of-pageviews.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2008\/08\/share-of-pageviews.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"313\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2008\/08\/uninstall-overrepresentation.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-76\" title=\"uninstall-overrepresentation\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/metrics\/files\/2008\/08\/uninstall-overrepresentation.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clearly, China is the outlier.\u00a0 Despite comprising only 1.9 percent of active daily users, Chinese users account for 18.6 percent of visits to the uninstall survey.\u00a0 We are still looking for possible explanations as to why Chinese users respond so much more frequently.\u00a0 Are they culturally more inclined to fill out surveys?
