We applaud this decision to keep the internet open and accessible to all, and reverse the 2018 roll-back of net neutrality protections. Alongside our many partners and allies, Mozilla has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/en\/mozilla\/mozilla-files-suit-fcc-protect-net-neutrality\/\">long time<\/a> proponent of net neutrality <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/2015\/10\/24\/net-neutrality-amendments-and-final-vote-in-the-eu\/\">across<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/files\/2015\/12\/Comentarios-generales-a-OSIPTEL.pdf\">the<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/2020\/09\/14\/mozilla-applauds-trai-for-maintaining-the-status-quo-on-ott-regulation-upholding-a-key-aspect-of-net-neutrality-in-india\/\">world<\/a> and in U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/en\/mozilla\/in-california-an-important-victory-for-net-neutrality\/\">states<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/en\/mozilla\/internet-policy\/stand-net-neutrality-help-paperstorm-fcc\/\">mobilized<\/a> hundreds of thousands of people over the years.<\/p>\n<p>The new FCC order reclassifies broadband internet as a \u201ctelecommunications service\u201d and prevents ISPs from blocking, throttling, or paid prioritization of traffic. This action restores meaningful and enforceable FCC oversight and protection on the internet, and unlocks innovation, <a href=\"https:\/\/ilsr.org\/report-most-americans-have-no-real-choice-in-internet-providers\/\">competition<\/a>, and free expression online.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><i>You can read Mozilla&#8217;s submission to the FCC on the proposed Safeguarding and Securing the Open Internet rules <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/ecfs\/document\/121497799035\/1\"><i>in December 2023 here<\/i><\/a><i> and additional reply comments <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/ecfs\/document\/1011790221057\/1\"><i>in January 2024 here<\/i><\/a><i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Net neutrality and openness are essential parts of how we experience the internet, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/covid-19-pandemic-shows-virtues-net-neutrality\/\">as illustrated<\/a> during the COVID pandemic, can offer important protections \u2013 so it shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise that such a <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/blog\/with-net-neutrality-back-on-national-agenda-mozilla-survey-finds-americans-do-not-trust-isps-to-look-out-for-their-best-interests\/\">majority of Americans<\/a> support it. Yesterday\u2019s decision reaffirms the internet is and should remain a public resource, where companies cannot abuse their market power to the detriment of consumers, and where actors large and small operate on a level playing field.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Mozilla participated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DOC-401773A1.pdf\">roundtable discussion<\/a> with experts and allies hosted by Chairwoman Rosenworcel at the Santa Clara County Fire Department. The event location highlighted the importance of net neutrality, as the site where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/22\/us\/verizon-throttling-california-fire-net-neutrality.html\">Verizon throttled<\/a> firefighters\u2019 internet speeds in the midst of fighting a raging wildfire.
