{"id":479,"date":"2013-01-28T08:18:23","date_gmt":"2013-01-28T16:18:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/privacy\/?p=479"},"modified":"2016-01-19T14:14:59","modified_gmt":"2016-01-19T22:14:59","slug":"newdntui","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/2013\/01\/28\/newdntui\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;do track or do not track?&#8221; &#8212; that is the question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a while now, we&#8217;ve been talking about how the Do Not Track feature really has <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/privacy\/2011\/11\/15\/deeper-discussion-of-our-decision-on-dnt-defaults\/\">three states<\/a>: &#8220;user says nothing&#8221;, &#8220;user says track&#8221;, and &#8220;user says don&#8217;t track&#8221;.  In Firefox 4, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.sidstamm.com\/2011\/01\/opting-out-of-behavioral-ads.html\">we introduced<\/a> two of these states with a checkbox (&#8220;user says nothing&#8221; and &#8220;user says don&#8217;t track&#8221;), and many people are voicing their desire to opt-out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/files\/2013\/01\/Screen-Shot-2013-01-25-at-4.13.37-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/privacy\/files\/2013\/01\/Screen-Shot-2013-01-25-at-4.13.37-PM-252x90.png\" alt=\"three-state DNT UI\" width=\"252\" height=\"90\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, it&#8217;s reasonable to expect some people want the tracking to improve the quality of ads they see; after all, the goal of this feature is to help each individual say what they want, whether it&#8217;s pro-tracking or not.<\/p>\n<p>I just finished updating the <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=765398\">Firefox tracking preference interface<\/a> to give people the ability to say, &#8220;this tracking thing is fine, bring on the custom content!&#8221;  This change is still experimental, but within a day or so it will be available in our Nightly builds for testing.
