{"id":602,"date":"2013-04-04T12:00:25","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T19:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/privacy\/?p=602"},"modified":"2013-04-04T12:00:25","modified_gmt":"2013-04-04T19:00:25","slug":"app-app-make","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/2013\/04\/04\/app-app-make\/","title":{"rendered":"Data, Apps and Developers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Mozilla launches <a href=\"www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/partners\/#os\">Firefox OS <\/a>and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/partners\/#marketplace\">Firefox Marketplace<\/a>, we&#8217;ve been focused on improving privacy through empowering app developers and users to improve transparency, choice and control, including implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Mozilla\/Firefox_OS\/Security\/Security_model#Permissions_Management_and_Enforcement\">a tiered permissions model<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Privacy_policies\">tips for designing apps with privacy in mind<\/a>. Over the next year, we&#8217;ll be rolling out more features and resources designed to make data practices more transparent for users and easier to indicate for developers.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneous to our own efforts, others have been innovating in the same space to try and push data transparency forward on mobile devices. We&#8217;re supportive of projects like these because they help drive the conversation forward and help to make privacy better across services and marketplaces:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As a part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntia.doc.gov\/other-publication\/2013\/privacy-multistakeholder-process-mobile-application-transparency\">US Department of Commerce&#8217;s Mobile Application Transparency Process<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/appdevelopersalliance.org\/\">Application Developers Alliance<\/a> has proposed a set of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntia.doc.gov\/files\/ntia\/publications\/consensus_vts.pdf\">Voluntarily Disclosed Transparency Screens (December 2012 draft)<\/a> to help app developers surface privacy impacting data practices to their users.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mefmobile.org\/\">MEF<\/a> is looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mefmobile.org\/activities-and-analytics\/Initiatives_home\/privacy\">proposing a standard framework, defining best practices and exploring rating systems<\/a> to help developers and consumers regarding mobile privacy.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uchastings.edu\/academics\/education\/law-science\/privacy\/index.php\">Privacy and Technology Project at UC Hastings<\/a> works on initiatives and tools designed to make privacy better for startups and others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Solutions that empower both developers and consumers are a critical part of making privacy better for users and the web and Mozilla looks forward to continuing our contributions to the growing number of initiatives around this issue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Mozilla launches Firefox OS and the Firefox Marketplace, we&#8217;ve been focused on improving privacy through empowering app developers and users to improve transparency, choice and control, including implementing a &hellip;
