{"id":724,"date":"2013-12-05T08:57:07","date_gmt":"2013-12-05T15:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/privacy\/?p=724"},"modified":"2013-12-05T08:57:07","modified_gmt":"2013-12-05T15:57:07","slug":"nationwide-day-of-action-for-online-privacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/netpolicy\/2013\/12\/05\/nationwide-day-of-action-for-online-privacy\/","title":{"rendered":"Nationwide Day of Action for Online Privacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/petitions.whitehouse.gov\/petition\/reform-ecpa-tell-government-get-warrant\/nq258dxk\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-729\" alt=\"ecpa\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/privacy\/files\/2013\/12\/ecpa-252x252.jpg\" width=\"252\" height=\"252\" \/><\/a>Mozilla stands with hundreds of major technology companies and nonprofit organizations, and tens of thousands of digital advocates, in calling for reform of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, or ECPA.<\/p>\n<p>ECPA was enacted in 1986 to ensure that wiretaps of then \u201cnew\u201d forms of electronic communications (e.g., email messages between computers) were limited in the same way that telephone wiretaps were. The safeguards have been watered down over the intervening years, and were not extended to data stored on a computer. The result is that emails, social media messages, and other communications that users may consider private are not uniformly treated as such under United States law.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Congress, with bipartisan support, has proposed changes to ECPA. Yet many government agencies would prefer to see these reform efforts die. Internet users who value privacy and trust online must make their voices heard.<\/p>\n<p>Mozilla supports efforts for positive change in this space \u2013 and we\u2019d like your help. We\u2019re asking you to join us by signing a <a href=\"https:\/\/petitions.whitehouse.gov\/petition\/reform-ecpa-tell-government-get-warrant\/nq258dxk\">White House petition<\/a> asking for support for sensible ECPA reform.
