{"id":1220,"date":"2011-08-10T13:40:49","date_gmt":"2011-08-10T02:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/?p=1220"},"modified":"2011-08-10T13:40:49","modified_gmt":"2011-08-10T02:40:49","slug":"memshrink-progress-week-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/2011\/08\/10\/memshrink-progress-week-8\/","title":{"rendered":"MemShrink progress, week 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A hodge-podge of things happened this week.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Mozilla QA team started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hskupin.info\/2011\/08\/04\/new-daily-mozmill-test-runs-for-firefox\/\">running MozMill endurance tests every day<\/a>.\u00a0 This should help identify and avoid regressions in memory usage in the future.<\/li>\n<li>Mihai Sucan fixed some <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=672470\">memory leaks in the web console<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Joe Siegrist, author of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastpass.com\/\">LastPass add-on<\/a>, fixed a leak in it that was causing zombie compartments.\u00a0 This fix is in <a href=\"https:\/\/lastpass.com\/upgrade.php?fromwebsite=1&amp;releasenotes=1\">version 1.75.0<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Justin Lebar fixed a <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=664659\">problem in the image memory reporters<\/a> that could cause nonsensical results (such as negative numbers) in about:memory.<\/li>\n<li>Igor Bukanov added memory reporters to <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=674480\">distinguish between clean and dirty unused chunk memory<\/a> in about:memory.<\/li>\n<li>Sander van Veen, a new Mozilla contributor, wrote patches for two MemShrink bugs: <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=673837\">bug 673737<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=673331\">bug 673331<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll land the first one soon, and the second one is waiting for a review.\u00a0 Great work, Sander!<\/li>\n<li>I wrote about some <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/2011\/08\/05\/clownshoes-available-in-sizes-2101-and-up\/\">allocations that are wasting space<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/2011\/08\/09\/firefox-7-is-lean-and-fast-2\/\">quantified Firefox 7&#8217;s memory usage improvements<\/a>.\u00a0 The latter post&#8217;s take-home message was that &#8220;Firefox 7 uses less memory than Firefox 6 (and 5 and 4): often 20% to 30% less, and sometimes as much as 50% less.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The MemShrink bug counts changed as follows.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>P1: 29 (-2, +4)<\/li>\n<li>P2: 62 (-5, +14)<\/li>\n<li>P3: 41 (-0, +6)<\/li>\n<li>Unprioritized: 2 (-10, +1)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We actually got through almost all the unprioritized bugs in today&#8217;s MemShrink meeting, which was good, but the counts are still going up.\u00a0 Fortunately, most of the new bugs are ideas for improvement that are reported by developers.\u00a0 My gut feeling (which I get from reading a <strong>lot<\/strong> of memory-related bug reports) is that the number of reports from users about high memory usage are much lower than they were a few months ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A hodge-podge of things happened this week.
