{"id":1850,"date":"2012-03-28T14:17:31","date_gmt":"2012-03-28T03:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/?p=1850"},"modified":"2012-03-29T09:27:41","modified_gmt":"2012-03-28T22:27:41","slug":"memshrink-progress-week-41","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/2012\/03\/28\/memshrink-progress-week-41\/","title":{"rendered":"MemShrink progress, week 41"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Add-ons<\/h3>\n<p>Jorge Villalobos <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/addons\/2012\/03\/22\/add-ons-update-12\/\">encouraged add-on authors to check for memory leaks<\/a> on the official Mozilla add-ons blog.<\/p>\n<p>The following add-ons had memory leaks fixed: <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=724273\">FavSync<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=730846\">Download Youtube Videos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=734677\">Page Speed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The follow add-ons were downgraded to &#8220;preliminary review&#8221; status on AMO, giving them less visibility: <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=731934\">QuickDrag<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=731801\">Yahoo Toolbar<\/a>.\u00a0 The Yahoo Toolbar case is interesting;\u00a0 it is available on AMO, but only has 47,618 users there.\u00a0 But the number of installed copies is much larger than this.\u00a0 (I can&#8217;t say how much larger, because the exact numbers are not public knowledge.)\u00a0 So it&#8217;s clear that most people who have it installed got it elsewhere, probably directly from Yahoo.\u00a0 Given that AMO accounts for only a tiny fraction of the installations, the effect of the downgrade in AMO review status is negligible.\u00a0 Furthermore, Jorge&#8217;s attempts to contact Yahoo appear to have failed.\u00a0 Finally, the only other means we have for addressing add-ons with problems is block-listing them, but that would be overkill in this case.\u00a0 So we are at an impasse.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a frustrating situation!<\/p>\n<h3>Gecko and Firefox<\/h3>\n<p>Tim Taubert fixed <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=735574\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=738774\">leaks<\/a> in the recently updated new tabs page.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Kew <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=688125\">added memory reporters for thebes font objects<\/a>.\u00a0 With text-heavy pages open, these can account for 10s of MBs of memory.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew McCreight <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=732495\">fixed some shutdown leaks involving the XBL cache<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Igor Bukanov did <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=730221\">something with JS principals<\/a> that I won&#8217;t pretend to understand.\u00a0 This bug wasn&#8217;t marked with the MemShrink tag, but it gave good Talos results, <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=730221#c19\">reducing the number of malloc calls and the maximum heap size on several platforms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Bug counts<\/h3>\n<p>This week\u2019s bug counts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>P1: 26 (-2\/+4)<\/li>\n<li>P2: 131 (-1\/+3)<\/li>\n<li>P3: 88 (-5\/+1)<\/li>\n<li>Unprioritized: 0 (-0\/+1)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nothing spectacular there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Add-ons Jorge Villalobos encouraged add-on authors to check for memory leaks on the official Mozilla add-ons blog.
