{"id":2775,"date":"2014-01-02T15:56:01","date_gmt":"2014-01-02T04:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/?p=2775"},"modified":"2014-01-02T15:56:01","modified_gmt":"2014-01-02T04:56:01","slug":"yeinu-your-experience-is-not-universal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/2014\/01\/02\/yeinu-your-experience-is-not-universal\/","title":{"rendered":"YEINU: Your Experience Is Not Universal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve lost count of the number of times I&#8217;ve heard statements like the following.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Firefox crashes ten times a day for me.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t understand how anyone can use it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s a simple answer: for most people it doesn&#8217;t crash ten times a day. But the person making the statement hasn&#8217;t realized that what links the first sentence to the second is an assumption &#8212; that other people&#8217;s experiences are the same. This is despite the fact that browsers are immensely complex, highly configurable, and used in many different ways on an enormous range of inputs.<\/p>\n<p>(BTW, in case it&#8217;s unclear: I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s ok for Firefox to crash ten times a day for anyone.)<\/p>\n<p>My mental rebuttal to this kind of thinking is <em>YEINU<\/em>, short for &#8220;your experience is not universal&#8221;. It&#8217;s something of a past-tense dual to the well-known <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=YMMV\">YMMV <\/a>(&#8220;your mileage may vary&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Although I&#8217;ve mostly thought about this in the context of browser development, it&#8217;s not hard to see how it relates to <em>many<\/em> facets of life. In particular, just this morning I was thinking about it in relation to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quora.com\/Society\/Do-black-people-use-heroin\/answer\/Aaron-Ellis\">this question on Quora<\/a> and the general notion of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Privilege_%28social_inequality%29\">privilege<\/a>. Out of curiosity, I googled the exact phrase (using quotes), and while I got several hits on software forums (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/forum.rpg.net\/showthread.php?711576-What-exactly-is-Mage-20th\/page3\">this<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/forums.mozillazine.org\/viewtopic.php?p=8538195\">this<\/a>, the latter being on a Mozilla forum), three of the five highest-ranked hits were from posts on feminist blogs (<a href=\"http:\/\/raynfall.wordpress.com\/2013\/11\/02\/rules-of-feminism-6-your-experience-is-not-universal\/\">#1<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ideologicallyimpure.wordpress.com\/2008\/04\/27\/your-experience-is-not-universal\/\">#4<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/diannaeanderson.net\/blog\/698\">#5<\/a>). Interesting!<\/p>\n<p>So, next time you&#8217;re puzzled by someone&#8217;s reaction to something, it might be worth considering if YEINU.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve lost count of the number of times I&#8217;ve heard statements like the following.
