{"id":319,"date":"2010-08-08T22:39:15","date_gmt":"2010-08-08T11:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/?p=319"},"modified":"2010-08-08T22:39:15","modified_gmt":"2010-08-08T11:39:15","slug":"reasons-not-to-worry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/2010\/08\/08\/reasons-not-to-worry\/","title":{"rendered":"Reasons not to worry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The higher-ups at Mozilla like to say that we should focus on building the best browser we can, and not to pay too much attention to our competitors.\u00a0 This is probably wise when you consider that we are competing against Microsoft, Apple and Google.<\/p>\n<p>But I can&#8217;t help reading comment threads relating to browsers on sites like Slashdot, Reddit and Metafilter.\u00a0 Judging from these threads, few people <strong>love<\/strong> Firefox;\u00a0 a few say things like &#8220;I can&#8217;t switch because I couldn&#8217;t live without Adblock Plus\/NoScript\/etc.&#8221;\u00a0 Lots of people complain about Firefox being slow\/bloated\/a memory hog.\u00a0 Lots of people praise Google Chrome, mostly for its speed.<\/p>\n<p>I realize these communities aren&#8217;t reflective of web users overall, but they do represent something of a leading edge.\u00a0 As do Linux users, which is why I am troubled by <a href=\"https:\/\/lists.ubuntu.com\/archives\/ubuntu-desktop\/2010-August\/002603.html\">Ubuntu&#8217;s plan to use Chromium as their default browser<\/a>.\u00a0 Also, IE9 looks like it will be a high-quality modern browser;\u00a0 the sleeping Microsoft giant has finally awoken.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s all rather depressing.\u00a0 So, gentle reader, please tell me why my perception is wrong.\u00a0 What am I overlooking?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The higher-ups at Mozilla like to say that we should focus on building the best browser we can, and not to pay too much attention to our competitors.\u00a0 This is probably wise when you consider that we are competing against Microsoft, Apple and Google.
