{"id":967,"date":"2011-06-29T16:19:09","date_gmt":"2011-06-29T05:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/?p=967"},"modified":"2011-06-29T16:19:09","modified_gmt":"2011-06-29T05:19:09","slug":"memshrink-progress-week-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/2011\/06\/29\/memshrink-progress-week-2\/","title":{"rendered":"MemShrink progress, week 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some potted highlights from the second week of MemShrink.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The beauty of Gregor Wagner&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=656120\">time-based GC trigger<\/a>, which I <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/2011\/06\/22\/memshrink-progress-week-1\/\">mentioned last week<\/a>, became ever evident.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been confirmed that nine other bug reports are fixed by this one change.\u00a0 Great stuff!\u00a0 See <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=656120#c40\">this comment<\/a> and subsequent comments for an analysis.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the release drivers decided it wasn&#8217;t suitable for back-porting to Firefox 6.\u00a0 Users who leave their browser open overnight should find Firefox 7 more to their liking, once it&#8217;s available.<\/li>\n<li>I landed lazy initialization of <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=661068\">TraceMonitors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=665404\">JaegerCompartments<\/a>, something I <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/nnethercote\/2011\/06\/21\/you-make-what-you-measure\/\">wrote about<\/a> previously.\u00a0 This gave a 2.89% reduction in the Trace Malloc MaxHeap measurement on CentOS (x86_64) release 5, and probably similar reductions on other platforms.<\/li>\n<li>Justin Lebar added <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=664486\">hard and soft page fault counts<\/a> to about:memory.\u00a0 This makes it clear if Firefox is paging badly.<\/li>\n<li>D\u00e3o Gottwald fixed a <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=664519\">leak in the iQ library<\/a> used by Panorama.\u00a0 This bug could cause entire tabs to be leaked in some circumstances.<\/li>\n<li>Blake Kaplan <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=634156\">avoided the creation of some sandboxes<\/a>.\u00a0 This seems to have reduced the number of JavaScript compartments required for <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/\">techcrunch.com<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There&#8217;s less than a week until the development period for Firefox 7 ends.\u00a0 Hopefully we&#8217;ll see some more good MemShrink fixes before that happens.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some potted highlights from the second week of MemShrink.
