It's an exciting time for the Mozilla family! This past March construction began on the new Berlin MozSpace.  With a breathtaking view of the river, the new build-out covers two floors and will feature a designated lunch area, an event space, common work space and a separate community space with room for future growth. The card access system we have at all other MozSpaces will also be implemented.  Surrounded by trendy restaurants, the central location was sought out for its diverse population - in the heart of the community.  The target timeline for the office move is in Q3.  Stay tuned for more exciting developments!

MozBerlin opened the doors to their new temp office on 2 May 2014!

Matea Lisica, Shannon Clayton and Lori Jashinsky along with Arzhel Younsi and Ed Lim (our IT brothers) were on the ground to ensure the move went smoothly and all systems were in place. Their hard work shows! The office was operational in just 3 days.  The new office is larger with more conference rooms, a small event space and will have 24 desks when all the furniture arrives.  More soft seating and other goodies will be arriving over the next few weeks.  You can see how bright and sunny it is.  We also have a new Office Services Coordinator in Berlin:  Martyna Sobczak.

2013 Year in Review

2013 was another “monumental” year for WPR, the MozSpaces extended team, and Mozillians around the world.   We continued to execute on our overall MozSpace Strategy (established in early 2011) with grand openings of 3 new MozSpaces (Paris, SF 1&2 and Portland). We locked and loaded a huge collaborative planning and construction effort on our largest project to date (New Mountain View – 331 Evelyn).

Through it all, we executed pretty flawlessly on our plans and our budget (hitting our construction target dates and move-in dates for these 3 spaces).  Most importantly, we produced minimal disruption for the nearly 300 Mozillians who received a new space in 2013!   However, not everything was perfect per our master plans. We encountered an extremely long delay in our planned Berlin location (The Factory) due to construction hold-ups by the Berlin developer (landlord) which forced Mozilla to wait for its completion.   Once this building is complete in 2014, we are still planning on executing our MozBerlin interior construction plans.   All in all, 2013 was one of our most exciting and best years yet in the WPR and MozSpace world.

PARIS

On April 2^nd, MozParis opened in the beautiful 9th Arrondissement. This historic building (built in 1778) mixes the striking architecture of the 18^th century with modern day luxuries. It is said that Marie Antoinette herself once inhabited this beautiful building. The space combines work stations for up to 50 people and a large community hall that can host up to 150 for events, meet-ups and work weeks.

 

SAN FRANCISCO

After months of competitive bidding, behind-the-scenes planning and unlimited hours of construction, MozSF expanded onto the 1^st and 2^nd floors formerly known as the Gordon-Biersch restaurant.  On June 10^th the floors officially opened to accommodate our planned Mozillian growth and team requirements.   We could almost hear the huge collective sigh of relief from the packed 7th and 3rd floors!  In addition we now have many more new conference rooms with Vidyo capabilities and new Event, SF Commons, and Mozilla Community (public) spaces.  We’ll continue our tradition of “open planning” for the “Mozilla Community Space” as we begin to focus on  an intended use for this “old Starbucks area” so we can fulfill our commitments to Mozillians, SF and our global MozSpace vision and strategy.

PORTLAND:

Our intense 2013 build-out efforts continued into the summer of 2013 as we proudly opened MozPortland in the Pearl District on July 22^nd.  This MozSpace, which can house ~45 Mozillians is in the restored Brewery Block building and has a vibrant and diversely talented group of Mozillians working there and having fun in the space.  The office is located blocks away from Powell’s, breweries (it is Portland after all) and the iconic food trucks.

BERLIN

We will literally touch history in Berlin.  The Factory, where part of the Berlin wall once stood, will be a new tech hub.  Some of the soon-to-be neighbors will be: SoundCloud, 6Wunderkinder, Four Sektor, Toast, Urge iO, Views, and Silicon Allee. Aligning with the Mozilla mission and history, the building will have an ‘open source’ look and feel with a restaurant, basketball courts, and shared spaces (all to be built by the landlord).  The building design was conceived to foster relationships within the Berlin technical community. Construction is planned to begin in Q1 2014 with an expected grand opening in Q4 2014. Stay tuned for updates. We are excited about our final “MozSpace” of MozBerlin.

 

Looking ahead to 2014 … Finishing our Original 2011 MozSpaces Strategic Plan:

In 2014, we’ll be putting the finishing touches on our 3-year journey and completing our original 2011 MozSpace Strategic Plan to provide a global footprint of  highly effective and productive collaboration and community areas for our global and highly distributed Mozillians.   What began as only 1 real “Mozilla Space” in 2011 will have blossomed to nearly a dozen “Moz Spaces” of various sizes, each with their distinct localized culture, and anchored by familiar Mozilla “basics” of workspace, collaboration space, communication technologies, and overall logistics (food, drinks, events, shipping).

The grand openings of our new Mountain View space for ~300 Mozillians (our 4th generation of a Mountain View MozSpace) and our Berlin MozSpace will be highlights in 2014.  We will continue our active communication and collaborative planning to be fully transparent so we create the spaces together as Mozillians.

Just as our online surveys, focus groups, Wiki info, and Brown Bag presentations contributed to the future of MV2014 and our prior 2012 and 2013 spaces, we will turn our collective and collaborative focus on how to make the spaces we’ve built HUM in order to maximize our potential and our opportunities.

Plan it.  Execute it.  Manage it.   WPR continued our Mozilla Spaces quest in 2012.   We opened new doors, signed new office space leases, organized events, and implemented new programs in our efforts to always stay one step ahead of our worldwide activities.

We began our Mozilla Spaces strategy in Jan, 2011 at a time when our only true “Mozilla Space” was downtown Mountain View, California which seemed inconsistent with our worldwide community, user base, and overall growth strategy.  In late 2010 and early 2011, we weren’t effectively promoting worldwide community collaboration, productivity, and events.  We knew we could do better.  We started.

We brought in a world class team of experts and opened San Francisco and Toronto in the summer of 2011 and upgraded New Zealand (Auckland) in Q3 2011.

By early 2012, we were hitting our stride and opened our doors in 4 new spaces including London and Taiwan in Q1, Vancouver and SF 3rd Floor in Q2, and added temporary workspaces for Portland, Paris, and Berlin as we continued to plan those futures.  Speaking of planning, each new space is planned with extensive analysis using key requirements for current and future talent, community strength, leadership, projected growth needs, and of course overall financial guidelines.

As we closed out 2012, we were operating 8 true Mozilla spaces on 4 different continents.  Looking forward into 2013, we are excitedly planning for grand openings in

• Paris (March/April)
• SF Floors 1 and 2 in May/June (ex-Gordon Biersch space)
• Portland (summer)
• Berlin (fall)
• Expanding our Taipei, Taiwan for a 3rd time with it’s focus on FFOS growth.

 

Moving and shaking in the Bay Area in 2012 and 2013

What started as a modest 7th floor San Francisco Moz Space (+ a cool deck) quickly transitioned to the need for more space.  We added the 3rd Floor in 2012 and signed a coveted and competitive bidding for Floors 1 and 2 (the ex-Gordon Biersch restaurant space).

Meanwhile, in Mountain View, we decided to consolidate our 4th floor back to floors 2 and 3 as we contemplated the final year of our current 5 yr lease.    The ensuing moving and shaking was a bit disruptive but in true California style we shook it off, stayed strong, and carried on.

We are currently actively planning version 2.0 of Mountain View with a launch date of Q1 2014.  We’ll be very excited to share these plans with everyone very shortly.

• Travel tips and tools give us easier travel along our way.

Our newest building project is underway in Berlin at the newly envisioned tech hub, The Factory.

Mozilla will soon be neighbors with the likes of SoundCloud and Berlin startups 6Wunderkinder, Four Sektor, Toast, Urge iO, Views, and Silicon Allee. The Berlin office will be an anchor member of this up-and-coming technology destination.

The Factory will be a large tech community resource in Berlin leading to collaboration and greater network ties between communities. The space will operate like a campus, complete with restaurant, basketball courts and shared spaces in the hopes of fostering frequent interactions and building relationships within the technical community of Berlin.

Well aligned with Mozilla’s mission and history, The Factory will be an exciting home for Mozillians in Germany, and we are looking forward to building out this space in 2013.
