{"id":2027,"date":"2018-08-22T14:16:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T13:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/press-uk\/?p=2027"},"modified":"2018-08-22T14:16:00","modified_gmt":"2018-08-22T13:16:00","slug":"new-in-hubs-images-videos-and-3d-models","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/press-uk\/2018\/08\/22\/new-in-hubs-images-videos-and-3d-models\/","title":{"rendered":"New in Hubs: Images, Videos, and 3D Models"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few months ago, we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozvr.com\/introducing-hubs-a-new-way-to-get-together-online\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an early preview release of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hubs.mozilla.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hubs by Mozilla<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an experiment to bring Social Mixed Reality to the browser. Since then, we\u2019ve made major strides in improving usability, performance, and support for standalone devices like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oculus.com\/go\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oculus Go<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Today, we\u2019re excited to share our first big feature update to Hubs: the ability bring your videos, images, documents, and even 3D models into Hubs by simply pasting a link.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/press-uk\/files\/2018\/08\/showcase.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2033\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/press-uk\/files\/2018\/08\/showcase.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"472\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The progress we\u2019ve made over the last several months has strengthened our view that the open web is the best platform for getting together in Mixed Reality. Today, you can join a room in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hubs.mozilla.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hubs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using any VR device on the market, as well as your phone or PC. It is so easy to use, our team has switched to using Hubs for our regular VR standup meetings!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utilizing the browser helps us create features that are easy to understand, because people are already familiar with how the web works. You can invite people into a room on Hubs by simply sharing a link &#8211; and now, you can bring your favourite content into the room by<\/span><b> pasting a link<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to anything on the web!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to share a video on YouTube, hop into a Hubs room on your PC or phone and paste the URL to the video. It\u2019s that simple! The video will appear in the space and start playing, and can be moved around or thrown up on a wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/press-uk\/files\/2018\/08\/video.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2030\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/press-uk\/files\/2018\/08\/video.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"472\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being able to share a video with friends in VR so easily is transformative, but that\u2019s just the beginning!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can paste the URL to any image on the web, and we\u2019ve added first-class support for all of your favourite image sites like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/imgur.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imgur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giphy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. 3D content also works &#8211; you can paste links to 3D models on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sketchfab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/poly.google.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or to any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.khronos.org\/gltf\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLTF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scene. It\u2019s magical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/press-uk\/files\/2018\/08\/sketchfab.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2028\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/press-uk\/files\/2018\/08\/sketchfab.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"472\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We didn\u2019t stop there. We know that some things you\u2019d like to share, like photos and documents, may be saved on your phone or PC. You can upload files, drag and drop files, or even paste content out of your clipboard right into Hubs. Upload a slide deck as a PDF, and you can flip through it together in VR. Export a 3D model to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.khronos.org\/gltf\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLTF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and drag it into the browser and everyone else will see it in 3D. Upload a few photos from your phone and everyone can arrange them together into a gallery. Take a screenshot, copy it to your clipboard, and paste it right into the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/press-uk\/files\/2018\/08\/upload.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2029\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/press-uk\/files\/2018\/08\/upload.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"472\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To protect your privacy, we\u2019ve made sure any content you upload is only available to others in the room. It\u2019s encrypted and removed when no longer needed. As always, all of the code is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mozilla\/reticulum\/blob\/master\/lib\/ret\/uploads.ex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open source<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so you can see how it works for yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re beyond excited to see the browser already letting us experience Social Mixed Reality in whole new ways. We think there are endless ways people can use these new features, and we\u2019ll be publishing some short video tutorials to help spark your creativity. We\u2019ll be continually adding more and more supported content types and methods for bringing more media into Hubs.
