Today we\u2019re casting off the \u201cexperimental\u201d label and announcing the first \u201cbeta\u201d release of Persona.<\/p>\n<p>Persona is ready to use for authentication:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/persona\/Browser_compatibility\">it works in all major smartphone, tablet, and desktop browsers<\/a>, the user experience has been thoroughly reviewed and polished,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/identity.mozilla.com\/post\/31739234834\/committing-to-a-stable-api-for-persona\">we\u2019re committed to the core APIs<\/a>, and its infrastructure is highly available and stable.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s it like to integrate Persona?\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BsQq7R6gFh8&amp;feature=youtu.be\">Watch a short video about why The Times implemented Persona for its world renowned crossword<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;[Persona] was definitely easier than OpenID or OAuth because it can almost all be done on the client side in JavaScript&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>David Somers (developer at News International)<\/p>\n<p>We haven\u2019t just refined Persona, we\u2019ve also significantly improved it since we first\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/identity.mozilla.com\/post\/7616727542\/introducing-browserid-a-better-way-to-sign-in\">introduced it<\/a>. Over the past few months we:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/identity.mozilla.com\/post\/18038609895\/introducing-mozilla-persona\">Completely refreshed our brand<\/a>, changing from the \u201cBrowserID\u201d codename to \u201cPersona.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Developed an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/identity.mozilla.com\/post\/28513408358\/a-new-api-for-persona\">entirely new (and better) API<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Streamlined the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/identity.mozilla.com\/post\/27914354400\/improvements-to-the-first-time-sign-up-flow\">first-time user experience<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Added support for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/identity.mozilla.com\/post\/27122712140\/new-feature-adding-your-websites-name-and-logo-to-the\">showing your site\u2019s name and logo<\/a>\u00a0in the login dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Enhanced the login dialog to optionally\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/identity.mozilla.com\/post\/23038368841\/streamlining-login-with-privacy-policy-and-terms-of\">include links to your site\u2019s terms of service and privacy policy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These changes have been well received and we\u2019re\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/identity.mozilla.com\/post\/31008721633\/application-and-platform-integration-of-persona\">seeing Persona gain traction<\/a>\u00a0outside of Mozilla. If you are a developer, now is the time to try Persona out. Persona is an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mozilla\/browserid\">open source project<\/a>\u00a0and we gladly welcome input and collaboration from the broader community via our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lists.mozilla.org\/listinfo\/dev-identity\">mailing list<\/a>\u00a0or our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.mozilla.org\/IRC\">IRC channel<\/a>\u00a0(#identity on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/irc.mozilla.org\/\">irc.mozilla.org<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This is the first of many beta releases, and we have some fantastic things planned for the future.<\/p>\n<p>So, what are you waiting for? Persona coexists well with existing login systems and only takes a single afternoon to integrate. What\u2019s more, because Persona logins are based on email addresses, sites still maintain a direct relationship with their users.
