Scientists, developers, artists and educators will swap ideas and code to make the web a better place<\/i><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Your skills and expertise are needed to help combat fake news, empower people to protect their privacy online, and build a healthier Internet.<\/p>\n<p>This Thursday and Friday, we\u2019re hosting a giant, distributed, open-source hackathon. We want to fuel the network of people who are rolling up their sleeves to make the web a safer, more secure, more inclusive place.<\/p>\n<p>Will you join us?<\/p>\n<p>Mozilla\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/mozilla.github.io\/global-sprint\/\">Global Sprint<\/a> is scheduled for June 1 and 2. It\u2019s an international public event: an opportunity for anyone, anywhere to energize their open-source projects with fresh insight and input from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Participants include biostatisticians from Brazil, research scientists from Canada, engineers from Nepal, gamers from the U.S., and fellows from Princeton University. In <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/MozillaScience\/mozilla-science-global-sprint-2015\">years past<\/a>, hundreds of individuals in more than 35 cities have participated in the Global Sprint.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Who\u2019s invited<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>You. And anyone else who wants to make the web a better place. The Global Sprint isn\u2019t just about open source code\u2014teachers, artists and activists will share their ideas and projects, too.<\/p>\n<p>So far, attendees span more than 20 countries. Come June 1, we will assemble on GitHub, on Twitter, in Gitter and elsewhere to collaborate. The Global Sprint has real-world locations, too. <a href=\"https:\/\/mozilla.github.io\/global-sprint\/register\/\">There are already more than 65 venues booked<\/a> in Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Japan and beyond.<\/p>\n<h3><b>What we\u2019re making<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Presently, the Global Sprint has more than 84 registered open-source projects seeking contributions. Here are just a handful:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/read-write-participate\/echoburst-77b3aa661d52\"><b>EchoBurst<\/b><\/a><b>,<\/b> a browser extension that uses natural language processing to combat fake news, polarization and toxicity online, and bolster constructive dialogue. \u201cFinding common ground is the only antidote to the poison of polarization,\u201d says EchoBurst\u2019s Tyler K. \u201cEchoBurst takes the first step of finding that common ground, which is engaging in discussion with people you don\u2019t agree with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/read-write-participate\/whats-a-shardnet-ad461884e51e\"><b>Cryptomancer<\/b><\/a>, an RPG akin to Dungeons &amp; Dragons that also teaches users about online security. \u201cAt Global Sprint, you can invent role-playing adventures for Cryptomancer,\u201d says Chad Sansing. \u201cThe game that asks, \u2018What if dragons, dwarves, and elves had an Internet of their own?\u2019 If you need a copy of the game, we have a free and DRM-free copy waiting for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/read-write-participate\/internet-safety-driving-licence-91f5878a7b3a\"><b>Internet Safety Driving License<\/b><\/a>, an online curriculum that teaches privacy best practices, webiquette and other digital skills. \u201cRight now we are working on Module 1: Cyberbullying Awareness Skills,\u201d says co-creator Lisa Wright. \u201cThis is the module that we are looking for help with at the Global Sprint.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/read-write-participate\/aerogami-2697282e3c73\"><b>Aerogami<\/b><\/a>, an interactive paper plane workshop that teaches the principles of aerodynamics. \u201cExplaining engineering concepts is very difficult\u2014there is too much new information and complex concepts that a student is supposed to learn in an hour of class,\u201d says Aerogami\u2019s Kshitiz Khanal. \u201cI wanted to change this and make learning more interactive, intuitive and fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/read-write-participate\/girlscript-233dcded9d01\"><b>GirlScript<\/b><\/a>, a nonprofit project that empowers young Indian women through technology workshops. \u201cWe impart skills online and offline,\u201d says GirlScript\u2019s Anubha. \u201cWe are still preparing the online curriculum, however, offline trainings and workshops have already started in three cities of India: Nagpur, Bhopal and Ahmedabad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/read-write-participate\/the-embryo-digital-atlas-9013872fc827\"><b>The Embryo Digital Atlas<\/b><\/a>, an open-source, web-based platform to visualize complex experimental datasets of embryogenesis in an easy (and beautiful) way. \u201cThe aim of The Embryo Digital Atlas is to make public datasets of embryogenesis easily accessible for an audience ranging from curious citizen, to students, to professional researchers,\u201d says creator Paul Villoutreix.<\/p>\n<p>You can find all Global Sprint projects <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mozilla\/global-sprint\/issues\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><b>How to participate<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>First, take a moment to learn about the basics of open source participation:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m-b3hdxvSMU?feature=oembed\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>Register to collaborate at a site in your area, or as a virtual participant. <a href=\"https:\/\/mozilla.github.io\/global-sprint\/register\/\">Registration info is here. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Select a project that\u2019s a good fit for your interests and skills.
