{"id":1513,"date":"2012-10-12T10:51:49","date_gmt":"2012-10-12T17:51:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/?p=1513"},"modified":"2016-02-19T14:41:37","modified_gmt":"2016-02-19T06:41:37","slug":"middle-class-money-strategies-in-brazil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/middle-class-money-strategies-in-brazil\/","title":{"rendered":"Middle Class Money Strategies in Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Written with Cori Schauer.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after doing some secondary research and talking to people who had lived in Brazil, we realized that the way we, Americans, think about money and making purchasing decisions, were a little different than Brazilians in the C-Class and so we dedicated a whole field report to just this topic.<\/p>\n<p>But before we can understand the many ways that Brazilians think about and use money, we need to first understand what it means to be middle class or C-Class in Brazil.\u00a0 According to the Criterio Brasil Scale, C-Class is determined by<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>monthly income<\/li>\n<li>level of education<\/li>\n<li>material items purchased by the household<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We used these factors as criteria in our recruiting process and met lovely people that spanned C1 (average monthly income R$1710) and C2 (average monthly income R$1128) classes.<\/p>\n<p>This is how C-Class thinks about and uses money.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/middle-class-money-strategies-in-brazil\/screen-shot-2012-10-08-at-12-05-43-pm\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1575\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1575\" title=\"money2\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-08-at-12.05.43-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"760\" height=\"568\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-08-at-12.05.43-PM.png 760w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-08-at-12.05.43-PM-252x188.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-08-at-12.05.43-PM-600x448.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><strong>Money is Familial<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Multi-family homes are typical in Brazil.<\/li>\n<li>Families share the economic burdens of supporting children and running households.<\/li>\n<li>Individual incomes are pooled together for monthly expenses as well as purchases.<\/li>\n<li>Expensive items, such as a home remodeling project may even have family members who don\u2019t live in the house contributing money.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/middle-class-money-strategies-in-brazil\/screen-shot-2012-10-02-at-1-31-39-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1515\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1515\" title=\"Hector\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-02-at-1.31.39-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"669\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-02-at-1.31.39-AM.png 669w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-02-at-1.31.39-AM-252x188.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-02-at-1.31.39-AM-600x448.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/a>One of our participants, Hector, told us about sharing the expense of his remodel.\u00a0 He said, \u201c&#8230;everyone contributed, even my brother-in-laws, we raised some money together during the years. And it still wasn\u2019t enough, but we were able to negotiate the materials to be paid in installments. We borrowed my uncle\u2019s credit card which had a higher limit, and we were able to divide that into installments&#8230;\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/middle-class-money-strategies-in-brazil\/screen-shot-2012-10-02-at-1-32-59-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1516\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1516\" title=\"credit\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-02-at-1.32.59-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"670\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-02-at-1.32.59-AM.png 670w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-02-at-1.32.59-AM-252x186.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-02-at-1.32.59-AM-600x444.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><strong>Credit can be good or bad depending on who you talk to.<\/strong> Using credit was prevalent amongst our participants.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Just like in the USA, we found varying degrees of trust with credit<\/li>\n<li>Credit enabled some families to purchase what they needed or desired<\/li>\n<li>Others were concerned about interest rates, and didn\u2019t want to pay \u201cmore\u201d for an item even if credit allowed you to have it sooner<\/li>\n<li>We also saw a few people who didn\u2019t trust credit, and didn\u2019t use it at all<\/li>\n<li>No matter the feelings toward credit, everyone had their own credit strategies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/middle-class-money-strategies-in-brazil\/credit-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1536\" title=\"credit-1\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"669\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-1.png 669w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-1-252x187.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-1-600x446.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/a>Enrique, one of our participants in Recife, told us a story about borrowing credit from his Aunt.\u00a0 He said, \u201cAfter having paid my fan and my sofa off, I set out to dip into some savings, I talked to my aunt, as most things I buy, and actually, I use my aunt\u2019s credit card. I gave her a down payment and then I financed the rest. Most of my things were bought with her credit card. Her credit limit is higher. I gave her a down payment of 200 and asked her to split in two of 50.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/middle-class-money-strategies-in-brazil\/credit-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1537\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1537\" title=\"credit-2\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"668\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-2.png 668w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-2-252x187.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-2-600x445.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/a>On the flip side, Ricardo avoids using credit because he doesn&#8217;t trust it. He feels it is difficult to manage, and he could easily get into debt if he used credit regularly.\u00a0 He bought these new sneakers by saving money that he earned from his part time job.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/middle-class-money-strategies-in-brazil\/screen-shot-2012-10-05-at-11-14-52-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1552\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1552\" title=\"Monica\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-05-at-11.14.52-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"721\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-05-at-11.14.52-AM.png 721w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-05-at-11.14.52-AM-252x188.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/Screen-Shot-2012-10-05-at-11.14.52-AM-600x448.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 721px) 100vw, 721px\" \/><\/a>We also met people like Monica, who combine cash and credit to make big purchases like her family TV above.\u00a0 The price was good, but she and her husband didn&#8217;t have all the money in cash. They paid a specific amount of money up front and used credit to finance the rest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/middle-class-money-strategies-in-brazil\/credit-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1538\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1538\" title=\"credit-3\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"668\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-3.png 668w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-3-252x187.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/credit-3-600x447.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 668px) 100vw, 668px\" \/><\/a>We also met a woman who had been blacklisted by the government for not paying her credit cards off, and all her credit was revoked. This meant she used cash for everything. She said, &#8220;My stove was broken, only one burner was working. So we decided to buy a new one. I started researching, looking for deals. We were already saving for it. Then we found this cheap deal and bought it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>C-Class has Purchasing Power<\/strong><br \/>\nBrazil is an emerging market and they are putting money into material goods instead of their modest homes.\u00a0 And they want more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/middle-class-money-strategies-in-brazil\/homework\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1539\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1539\" title=\"homework\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/homework.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"667\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/homework.png 667w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/homework-252x188.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/homework-600x447.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/a>This group is interested in buying high-tech devices &#8211; especially those used for communication and entertainment.\u00a0 They are also practical and look for the best deal and the most effective way to spend money.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s this all mean?<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen selling a phone to this group of people, we need to pay close attention to the price and the functionality.\u00a0 The phone needs to be affordable, but at the same time not seen as &#8220;cheap&#8221; otherwise they will not value it as much as their current phones.\u00a0 In terms of functionality, the phone needs to have the communication and entertainment features such as FM radio, TV, MP3 player and a good camera so that they can satisfy their core behaviors with the phone.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Written with Cori Schauer.
