My mom, who has health issues, also has a Claro chip, so&#8230; I bought Oi because they had a really good deal sometime ago and we decided to get it. [Oi] had a good deal when they first came to Sao Paulo. You paid R$10 in a month and get R$20 a day to use on voice calls.\u201d<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/phone-usage-in-brazil\/attachment\/3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1559\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1559\" title=\"3\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"627\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/3.png 627w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/3-252x188.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/3-600x449.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rosa uses Facebook to keep up with her friends who don\u2019t live nearby. \u201cI put my TIM card here and use it to access my Facebook, as it will discount R$0.50 from my credits per day.<\/li>\n<li>Monica watches TV to pass the time at work and on the bus. She pulls out the antenna on her phone to get the best reception.<\/li>\n<li>Tomas listens to the radio. \u201cI really like that it has a radio. I would only buy a new cell phone if it had a radio. It even plays without headphones, it has speakers.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<p>Hector listens to his MP3 player with his loud built-in speaker. \u201cI\u2019m a sound guy &#8211; I like things loud.\u201d The radio only works with his earphones, but the MP3 player works without them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p><strong>People want to do more their phones.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/phone-usage-in-brazil\/attachment\/4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1560\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1560\" title=\"4\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/4.png 630w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/4-252x188.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/4-600x449.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><strong>Transferring data means bluetooth and cords.\u00a0<\/strong> Many of our participants use bluetooth to trade songs and other media as it is cheaper than getting online and downloading content.\u00a0 <strong><\/strong>Tomas transfers photos from his phone to his girlfriend&#8217;s phone using bluetooth.\u00a0 While others would go to LAN houses and use the desktops there to get ringtones and then transfer them over to their phones by using the proper cables.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/phone-usage-in-brazil\/attachment\/5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1561\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1561\" title=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"631\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/5.png 631w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/5-252x187.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/5-600x446.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><\/a><strong>Accessing the Internet is not easy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Current phones don\u2019t support the true Internet and it\u2019s really slow<\/li>\n<li>Wifi is not prevalent<\/li>\n<li>Internet access is via carrier network, because there is no wifi at home<\/li>\n<li>The data limits are small &#8211; some plans allow 5mb per session, others 30mb per month<\/li>\n<li>Storage limits are small on the phone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/10\/phone-usage-in-brazil\/attachment\/6\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1562\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1562\" title=\"6\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/6.png 629w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/6-252x188.png 252w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/10\/6-600x449.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><\/a><strong>And they want one phone (to rule them all).<\/strong>\u00a0 Luca is a college student who wants access to the Internet and emails on her phone.\u00a0 She says, &#8220;I wish I had a newer, more stylish cell phone, with a lot more features.\u00a0 It can be really convenient to have access to the Internet on your phone&#8230;. My teachers at school send us a lot of email with class content or updates related to the class.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why it is so important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Whereas Hector, a sound engineer, wants the Internet and email so he can do business from his phone.\u00a0 He said, &#8220;That would help with research.\u00a0 For instance, a client wants to get a new sound system in his car, but he doesn&#8217;t know what exactly he wants, so I gather examples on the Internet and from previous work I&#8217;ve done, and show him what can be done to a car like his.\u00a0 So I make some combinations and alternatives that I send to them, they make their choice and we get it done.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does this all mean?<br \/>\n<\/strong>From this research, we now know what the wish list for the phone is in terms of communications, entertainment, social media, functionality, looks and productivity.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Written with Cori Schauer.
