{"id":160,"date":"2012-01-05T19:32:37","date_gmt":"2012-01-06T03:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/userresearch\/?p=160"},"modified":"2012-01-05T19:32:37","modified_gmt":"2012-01-06T03:32:37","slug":"how-one-9-year-old-uses-an-ipad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/2012\/01\/how-one-9-year-old-uses-an-ipad\/","title":{"rendered":"How one 9 year old uses an iPad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This Christmas, my 9 and 6 year-old cousins each got an iPod Touch.\u00a0 Small computing devices aren&#8217;t new to them &#8212; they&#8217;ve spent the last 6 months playing Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja on their mom&#8217;s iPhone and more recently her iPad.\u00a0 They are avid Wii players too.<\/p>\n<p>So when I was making plans for the holidays, I decided to ask my aunt if she was okay with me interviewing her oldest son.\u00a0 She agreed in a heartbeat.\u00a0 <em>Sweet! Oh wait, I&#8217;m not ready for this!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My goal was to interview Adam (not his real name) in a show-and-tell fashion. I asked questions like &#8220;Show me that app. How does it work? When did you get it?\u00a0 How did you hear about it? Why do you like it?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sitting on his bed with his stuffed Uglydoll, a few science books and his mom&#8217;s iPad, Adam took me through his apps.\u00a0 First the Games folder, then Games II folder, then we did a web search in Safari for &#8220;Science facts for kids &#8221; but interestingly enough he typed his query into the iPad search bar, not by going to the Safari app.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/userresearch\/2012\/01\/how-one-9-year-old-uses-an-ipad\/science-facts-for-kids\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-167\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-167\" title=\"science facts for kids\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/userresearch\/files\/2012\/01\/science-facts-for-kids-300x165.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/01\/science-facts-for-kids-300x165.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/01\/science-facts-for-kids-640x353.png 640w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/01\/science-facts-for-kids.png 758w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> So after we spent 30 minutes walking through the apps he uses, which were just games and Photobooth, he showed me all the other capabilities of the iPad.\u00a0 &#8220;You can even use it as an iPod.&#8221;\u00a0 However when we looked at iTunes there was no music to be found.\u00a0 He admitted that he doesn&#8217;t listen to any music on it, but he wanted to make sure that I knew the device <em>could<\/em> do such things.<\/p>\n<p>At the very end, I asked him to draw two pictures for me &#8211; one of what he liked and one of what he disliked about his mom&#8217;s iPad and this is what I got:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/userresearch\/2012\/01\/how-one-9-year-old-uses-an-ipad\/user3-drawing\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-162\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-162\" title=\"user3-drawing\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/userresearch\/files\/2012\/01\/user3-drawing-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/01\/user3-drawing-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/01\/user3-drawing-640x478.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/ux\/files\/2012\/01\/user3-drawing.jpg 1296w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I laughed to myself.\u00a0 <em>What did I really expect him to draw for me?<\/em>\u00a0 Then I decided that his answer made perfect sense.\u00a0 His drawing along with our interview made me realize:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Ownership isn&#8217;t an issue.<\/strong>\u00a0 Although the iPad is his mom&#8217;s, with her Notes app filled with important data, they don&#8217;t bump into any ownership issues&#8230; at least not yet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>The iPod Touch can&#8217;t compete with the iPad.<\/strong>\u00a0 His iPod Touch is brand spanking new and yet he still prefers to play Angry Birds, Mr Giggles and Call of Atlantis on the iPad because &#8220;it&#8217;s more fun on a bigger screen&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<strong> His mom is his discovery mechanism.<\/strong>\u00a0 His classmates and younger brother don&#8217;t tell him about cool new apps, he learns about games from his mom.\u00a0 He doesn&#8217;t go exploring in the app store or the web for cool new games or apps for kids, although he easily could based on his web searching capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>And just like most adults, he doesn&#8217;t know what he wants.\u00a0 The iPad is doing everything he wants it to do, and he can&#8217;t imagine what more it could do for him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Christmas, my 9 and 6 year-old cousins each got an iPod Touch.\u00a0 Small computing devices aren&#8217;t new to them &#8212;
