Add-ons for Australis Contest – Rules

Overview | Winner Selection | Prizes | Judges | Rules

Introduction: The objective of this Contest is to encourage development of Firefox Add-ons designed specifically to take advantage of the features of the redesigned Firefox user interface, known as Australis.

Sponsor:  The sponsor of this Contest is Mozilla Corporation, located at 331 E. Evelyn Ave., Mountain View, CA 94041 (“Sponsor”).

Eligibility:  No purchase or fee is necessary to enter or claim any prize.

The Contest is open to individuals who are at least the age of majority in their country of residence. Minors 13 years or older who reside in the U.S. and minors in certain other countries depending on local laws are also eligible to participate in the Contest but will be required to submit a signed parental consent form with their Entry. Email us at for a parental consent form.

The Contest is open only to individuals and teams of individuals. It is not open to companies, educational institutions, organizations, etc. or to groups associated with such institutions. Entrants may not enter any Add-ons in which such institution may claim ownership. Teams must pick a team leader, who will submit the team’s Entry and be the sole recipient of any prizes for the team (in other words there is only one prize per winning Entry, not a prize for each member of the team).

The Contest is void in any country subject to a U.S boycott and where prohibited by law or restricted by law or regulations.

Employees and contractors of Sponsor and its parent company, subsidiaries, affiliates, suppliers, advertising agencies, and the families of and persons living in the same household as such employees, are not eligible to participate.

By entering you agree to be bound by these Official Rules and all decisions of the Sponsor and judges, which are final and binding. The Contest is subject to all applicable laws.

How to Enter: To enter the Contest, create or update your Add-on (“Entry”), submit it to the Mozilla Add-ons website at: (“AMO”), and then fill out the entry form linked from AMO, including selecting the judging category to which you are submitting your Entry. You will be required to agree to the Add-on Developer Agreement when you sign up for AMO, if you haven’t already done so. You may submit up to three Entries.

If you are a team of individuals submitting an Entry, the Entry should be submitted under the email account of the team leader. All the individuals on the team should be identified in some way in the description for proper attribution.

You must be the named and authorized account holder of the email address submitted in connection with your Entry. The authorized account holder is the natural person who is assigned to the email address by an internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization that is responsible for assigning email addresses or the domain associated with the submitted email address. Entries submitted will not be returned or acknowledged.

Without limiting any other rights, the Sponsor has the right to, in the Sponsor’s sole discretion, reject or remove from the Contest any Entry that, in the Sponsor’s sole discretion, violates these Rules, any applicable Sponsor policy, any applicable laws, or is in any way harmful or objectionable. Sponsor also reserves the right to disqualify any entrant or Entry at the Sponsor’s sole discretion. No correspondence shall be entered into.

Privacy:  Through your registration on AMO you will select a user name and provide us with your email address. Winners will be asked to provide their names and a mailing address so that we can send them their prizes. All Entries are public on AMO and may be publicized in other locations as well, including the entrants’ user names. Except as otherwise stated herein or as otherwise agreed by you and the Sponsor, all other personal information you provide in connection with the Contest will be used only for purposes relating to this Contest, and will not be communicated to third-parties without prior permission or as otherwise specified in our Privacy Policy located at

Sponsor reserves the right to review an Entry before posting it online, and to remove an Entry even after it has been posted. No guarantee is made that any particular Entry will or will not be posted or regarding the length of the review period. Sponsor reserves the right, in its absolute discretion, to determine if any particular Entry is appropriate for posting. Rejected Entries will not be acknowledged or returned. All Entries that are uploaded and made available for viewing by the general public will be deemed posted at the direction of the Entrant within the meaning of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the Communications Decency Act.

    Some questions:

    1. Does the “employees and contractors” clause apply to unpaid volunteers, such as AMO editors?

    2. Does the bookmarks category have an australis-specific requirement?

    3. How does bookmarks implementation differ in australis? It seems unchanged.

    1. Jorge Villalobos wrote on

      1. No, this is a restriction for people who are paid by Mozilla. All volunteers that aren’t being paid can participate.

      2. No. The add-on should work well with Australis, but it doesn’t need to use any of the new features.

      3. You’re right. There is only one small improvement in the bookmarking UX. We just want add-ons that do interesting stuff with bookmarks 🙂

What’s the small improvment? I’m curious about it. I was thinking of doing some bookmark addons in future and would like to take advantage of it.

  2. Lori wrote on

    Oh, I had another question:

    4. Is history considered part of bookmarks?

    1. Jorge Villalobos wrote on

While we will consider add-ons that use Places in general, and maybe even add-ons that focus on history, we want the submissions to at least involve bookmarking.

      1. Lori wrote on

What about tagging? Assuming it’s all Places-resident, of course.

        1. Jorge Villalobos wrote on

Tagging is part of bookmarking, sure.

(Thought I post here avoiding the anti-australis crowd)
Through testing my extension I noticed that there was absolutely no visual indication if you are on a bookmarked page when you put the bookmark button anywhere but the navigation bar. And I was wondering if this is something that might have been looked over.
Should I just submit a bug and see the reaction?

Also, is there no confirmation email when submitting an entry?
It’s always nice to have some reassurance of your submission.

    1. Amy Tsay wrote on

Hi Boots, which add-on did you submit?

      1. Boots wrote on

I’m pretty sure everything went fine.
It was just that not receiving a confirmation put me off.
But after having a closer look at the rules and reading this,
“Entries submitted will not be returned or acknowledged.”,
I don’t think there is anything to worry about.

I would like to confirm something. It clearly states in the rules that there can be up to 3 entries per user. However, the entry form has only “3. Your entry”, “4. Your second entry (optional)” and “5. Copy of Your second entry (optional)”.

My question: is this a mistake, and 5. should actually be “Your third entry (optional)”? Or can we fill three different forms, one for each entry?

By the way, an e-mail address somewhere for support questions (like this) would probably be good. At least, I didn’t find any such thing directly relating to the contest, other than this comments section.

    1. Amy Tsay wrote on

Hi Quicksaver, yes, this is a mistake–thanks for pointing it out! It should say “Your third entry (optional)”. We’ll try and get it changed.

Another question, in the rules it says that in case my entry does not pass full review at AMO, I will be given a week to modify and resubmit it. I’ve been doing more development on the add-on since first submitting it for the contest. Can I submit a new version that contains more changes/improvements than strictly necessary to meet the AMO requirements and still be considered for the contest?

    1. Amy Tsay wrote on

Hi mzki, if the add-on you submitted before the deadline has passed full review, that is the version that will be judged.

      1. mzki wrote on

Hi Amy, thanks for replying. The thing is my add-on submitted just before the deadline failed to pass full review. The rules state that I still have a week to submit a corrected version. My question is basically whether it is acceptable for that corrected version to contain other changes and enhancements developed since I first submitted the add-on.

        1. Amy Tsay wrote on

The only fixes should be the ones that were pointed out to you when it didn’t pass full review.
