Success Beyond Limits March Break Camp 2016

For the 3rd year in a row, Success Beyond Limits (SBL) has hosted their March Break Employment Readiness and Career Exploration program out of the Mozilla community space. A week focused on exposure and opportunities related to a myriad of careers, which include workshops and workspace tours. This year’s workshops included the Art of Negotiation, Transition into Post-Secondary, Design Thinking and a Career Panel.

We believe a successful training prepares learners to connect new skills, resources, methods and ideas with their own interests and professional goals.
Participants in our recent  Web Literacy Leaders Workshop have been doing just that. The workshop took place over a 2-month period and included a face to face training, open forum discussion, two community calls, and a final celebration.
During this time the group of learners comprised of teachers, librarians, administrators, and technology coaches, started to experiment with Mozilla tools in their classrooms, and share work and reflections across the digital and face to face spaces.

  • Incorporating Mozilla tools in the classroom

Sean teaches learners with special needs. This is how he prepares for teaching his students to use Thimble, Mozilla’s online code editor:

“I had laminated charts with various coding (CSS & HTML) basics to reference as they worked. I also paired students into teams based on skill levels, so those struggling with the concepts could be helped by those who better understood the process. That seems to have worked well at least from a management perspective, so the students will first ask their partner to help them before coming to me.”

This workshops was a great opportunity to share other Mozilla initiatives, like the encryption campaign, which inspired Susan to design a debate curriculum.

To prepare, she invited her students to explore the encryption issues published on the site. They watched videos, examined several encryption companies in the United States, reviewed the First Amendment, and discussed terrorism in order to shape arguments for and against surveillance and encryption.
Through her curriculum students were able to understand, discuss and form arguments about encryption in a learning space with peers, teachers and judges.
3. JEN DIONISIO, 6th grade computer teacher, at Wagner Middle School in Manhattan

Jen considers the Tag Tag Revolution activity as a great way to introduce learners to the basics of coding. That’s why she decided to introduce it in some of her classes. She explained her process and how the students reacted to the activity:

“The activity went well the majority of the time, however the biggest challenge was keeping the noise at a reasonable level!!! The kids really enjoyed wearing the tags and thought it was hysterical when they had to do multiple tags.”

Final reflection
Most participants were able to apply what they learned in their classrooms, libraries and programs. Their projects ranged from coding the periodic table, to building diverse websites in Thimble. We learned as much from them as they did from us. Moving forward we will incorporate participant suggestions into future trainings and resources. A big thank you to NYC DOE for organizing this initiative and to all the wonderful educators we met along the way.

Open Data Open Mic

Last week fellow Mozilla Science Labber Abby Cabunoc-Mayes and I attended the FORCE 2016 conference in Portland, Oregon. The organization behind the conference is focused on improving communication around research and scholarship.

I chose to attend the “By Researchers, For Researchers” workshop on how to promote scholarly communication at academic conferences and out of this workshop blossomed a new idea for communication around open data.

THE CHALLENGE

As open data advocates, one of our frequent struggles is trying to get researchers interested and engaged in open data. People talk about it being a good idea and there has been a lot of work around developing systems to support it, but we still have difficulty communicating the real life benefit of open data to the research community. It takes more time to make data open, sometimes more money, and many just don’t understand why they should bother.

THE WORKSHOP

The workshop focused on reaching researchers at their disciplinary academic conferences instead of trying to pull them into ours. The primary exercise of the workshop put participants into small groups to brainstorm actionable innovative ideas to engage researchers at these conferences. I lucked into a group including Charlie Rapple, Raja Cholan, and Eva Montenegro.

We started out acknowledging the barriers around engaging researchers at academic conferences:
1. Pre & post conference workshops frequently require extra $$ to register for the workshop and / or travel costs for staying an extra day.
2. There is a need from researchers to justify spending time & money at a workshop “not directly related” to their research.
3. If communication is included in the body of the conference (through sessions, panels, etc) there is competition from concurrent sessions that are “more relevant”.

OUR SOLUTION

Our group came up with an idea we are calling Open Data Open Mic (other suggestions, welcome). An “open mic” (short for “open microphone”) is a live event where audience members are invited to stand up in front of a microphone and share something with the rest of the audience. Usually you will see this method used for poetry, music, or comedy. Our idea is to use it for storytelling. Basically, we want to take our message about open data out of the formal conference presentation formats and make it part of the informal discussion throughout the conference.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Stake out a space in the exhibit area of the conference.
    Originally we were thinking we could ask conference organizers for a table in a public space (preferably near a coffee cart) but a representative from an agency that hosts a couple conferences a year I talked to suggested conference organizers should WANT this and provide the exhibit space for free.
  2. Identify champions to tell their open data success stories.
    Find a few highly regarded researchers in the discipline of focus for the conference that are willing to share success stories around open data. During breaks and lunches schedule one or two of those champions to present their stories in 3-5 minutes in the exhibit space. We will request permission to record so these stories can be saved to an online forum post-event.
  3. Invite others to tell their stories.
    After the champions tell their stories, open the mic and invite others to tell their open data success stories in 3-5 minute chunks. We’d also ask permission to record these.
  4. Make these stories available through a website that links to other open data resources.
    This online forum would provide access to not only the recorded stories but promote other open data resources such as events, training resources, organizations, tools, etc.

The end goal is to make the positive results of open data part of the informal conversation that takes place at academic conferences and to drive researchers to resources that provide opportunities to encourage and engage in open data practices.

Because of the workshop, this idea is focused on doing this at academic conferences, but really it could be done anywhere! At Study Group meetings, Open Science Meetups, stand-alone workshops, library events… you name it! Raja even came up with the idea of developing an app that makes it easy to record and share your open data story.

The STEMM Role Models app helps you find diverse speakers for your event | #mozsprint 2016

Kirstie Whitaker is postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge. Kirstie has been a huge advocate for open science, particularly around reproducible research. At our first Working Open Workshop, she introduced us to STEMM Role Models, a project she’s working on along with a group of researchers at UC Berkeley. I was won over with her plan to inspire future generations in STEMM fields!

Since then, Kirstie and the team have begun implementation on the STEMM Role Models app. I interviewed Kirstie to learn more about the STEMM Role Models app and find out how you can help during our Global Sprint 2016, June 2-3.

What is the STEMM Role Models app?

The STEMM Role Models app allows you to access and add to a database of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medical professionals who can speak about their work at your event. You can search by keywords and find contact information, links to publications, blogs, social media profiles, youtube clips of previous presentations, and testimonials. Importantly, everyone in the database can identify as one or more of a selection of different underrepresented groups in STEMM. At the moment these include women, members of the LGBTQ community, people of color, people with a disability, those with caring responsibilities and those who have taken a non-traditional career path.

The goal is to ensure that conference organisers are able to access a diverse and representative group of the most exciting experts in their field around the world.

Why did you decide to work on this project?

It started when I posted a question on Facebook after hearing about the Rosalind Franklin App Competition

“Happy 2016 Facebook friends. I’ve been puzzling about this competition today. What would be a good app to empower and/or support women in STEMM. What’s missing that we could create??”  This post sparked a discussion among a group of researchers I knew from my time at UC Davis: Amy Orsborn, Erin Rich and Elizabeth Minor. The ideas we discussed led to the STEMM Role Models app.

We were motivated by Erin’s personal experience of organising a gender balanced symposium. When she set out, she did not imagine how hard finding appropriate female speakers would be. Looking back over the years of conference presentations that she had attended only served up more examples of male researchers in her field. Ultimately, Erin spent many hours emailing these men asking them to recommend female colleagues. Her hard work paid off, but the other team members agreed: they had to be an easier way!

We have all personally noted the secondary role women often play as invited speakers at professional conferences. We wanted to ensure that anyone who wants to do the right thing has the tools that allow them to do so freely available when they need them. We ended up winning the runners up prize in the Rosalind Franklin appathon in February 2016.

How has the lack of diversity in STEMM fields affected you?

It can be very demoralising working as a female early career researcher in STEMM fields. It’s difficult to see your own career path when surrounded by the status quo of white, male academics. In many cases the inertia of the academic system is particularly damaging: it is not enough to simply see that there is a problem, someone must act to change it.

Each member of the development team has experienced the power that a positive role model can play in combating imposter syndrome and stereotype threat, and have been that role model for junior colleagues. We have witnessed the inequalities in the current system and are dedicated to changing the entrenched biases within it.

How will the STEMM Role Models App help promote diversity?

We don’t think that conference organisers set out to present ideas only from cis-gendered straight white men! They want to get the best speakers and don’t really care about demographics. When conference organisers use the STEMM Role Models app to ensure the invited speakers are representative of their field’s gender balance, they are increasing the visibility of women experts to their peers and to the public. (The same is true for members of any traditionally underrepresented group.)

On the surface, the STEMM Role Models app will provide a resource for conference organisers who are committed to overcoming their implicit biases and promoting a diverse representation at their event. But more profoundly, by encouraging the community to support its members through positive testimonials, it will empower members of underrepresented groups to overcome the effects of imposter syndrome and thrive in their careers. By working together to promote excellent work done by people from a diverse range of backgrounds we will empower the next generation who may be looking for examples of people “just like themselves” to excel as leaders in STEMM fields.

When will I be able to use the STEMM Role Models app?

We have a website and some wireframe schematics of what we want, but we haven’t had the time to implement our ideas. We hope to build a first prototype for use soon!

What problems have you run into while working on the STEMM Role Models App?

It’s tough sometimes balancing an exciting side project and our day jobs! We’re expanding into development outside the four founders’ expertise. We don’t have any funding so we’re reliant on the goodwill of the open source community which has been outstanding so far, and we don’t want to take any of the help we’re offered for granted. It has meant some pretty steep learning curves though: I started 2016 not knowing what CSS stood for and now I’m reviewing pull requests about testing frameworks and responsive web design!

What kind of skills do I need to help you build the STEMM Role Models App?

Ooooh – there are so many ways you can help! A really easy way would be to critique what we’ve written and offer suggestions on how we can communicate.

Aside from feedback, we would love for experts with the following skills to donate even just a couple of hours of their time to jump us forwards:

  • front end development (get our wireframes represented as HTML and CSS),
  • back end development (create a database and implement a way to interact with it!),
    • In particular we are looking for help implementing our database to store speaker info, either using a dbms or something lighter weight like using google sheets
  • proofreading (find all our broken links and typos),
  • user interface feedback (do our instructions make sense?),
  • writing funding applications (reaching out to get some money to PAY for people’s time and effort),
  • marketing (share the idea with your social and professional networks) and
  • general guidance from people in a variety of under-represented groups across all STEMM fields! Are you a conference organiser? What information would you want to search for? Are you a member of a traditionally under-represented group? Do you know others working on the same sorts of projects? Can you put us in touch?

How can others help you during the Mozilla Science Global Sprint, June 2-3?

We all have full time jobs, but for those two days the STEMM Role Models development team will be concentrating 100% on developing the app. We’re hosting a site at UC Berkeley and will be live streaming the discussions so you can join us in person or from wherever you are. We’re so looking forward to hearing your ideas, getting some feedback on what we’ve done so far and implementing some of the great suggestions from our community.

Stellar Projects at Space Apps 2016

This past weekend, the Mozilla Science Lab partnered with CartoDB to host Science Hack Day NY and Space Apps 2016, a combo event inviting our local community to learn and build cool projects and prototypes for space and open science. Our first evening we hosted a series of trainings around project pitching, connecting sensors, designing interfaces and finding data to support hackathon ideas, and you can profit from those same guides via our fancy Data Camp site. Our schedule for the two days that followed focused on team formation and project creation leading up to our selection of “winning” teams, and our submission of two projects and one people’s choice award to the Global Space Apps jury.

We covered this in a previous announcement blog, but the turnout and enthusiasm was unexpected, and we’d love to address that here. We had an incredible diversity of around 25 participants, both female and male, beginner and advanced, cross-disciplinary and curious collaborators from all corners of New York and New Jersey. Likewise, our projects reflected a keen interest in solving problems in science creatively, with groups using the principles of art and industrial design to craft robotics prototypes, applying color field and depth mapping in VR space to complex principles of string theory and quantum mechanics, or scheming on the detection of meteorite material using some chemical properties of jewelry-making. It was a truly epic event.

Addressing the Internet of Things – IoT Community Call

The Internet of Things (IoT), simply defined, is the development of everyday objects that are connected to the internet, allowing them to send and receive data. With a proud history of protecting and contributing to the Internet, Mozilla is cultivating a professional learning community who can shape IoT with Mozilla’s values in the decade to come.

Last week, we explored the topic of IoT with an open community discussion about how Mozilla is addressing this topic, some research informing our plans, what we’ve learned so far, and where we’re going.
Leading the discussion was Mozilla Foundation representative Michelle Thorne, located in Berlin, Germany. Featured guests were Rikta Krishnaswamy, user researcher from Quicksand in Bangalore, India and Jon Rogers, professor of product design from the University of Dundee, Scotland.
Here are a few highlights from the discussion:

  • “Bricking” – When connected items lose functionality (from an update or malfunction, they become “bricks”. Many items are now connected but when they lose functionality it can disrupt daily life. The Nest thermostat malfunction is one example.
  • Co-designing IoT – bringing “ordinary” people into the design process IS NOT OPTIONAL. It’s a new role for the designer – not just to physically build the thing, but to account for input/feedback along the way. To make it relevant to the daily life. It’s a messy world out there – and ignoring it by only making smooth and shiny objects isn’t a responsible nor human way to respond.
  • Human-centered design research – It’s about opening up the process, and bringing the intended people who will use the tech into the design process at certain points. Let’s make the process more democratic.
  • User control – We don’t always have “on-off” switches with current IoT. We need to start with a vision about privacy. Our initial focus is on user control – agency, comfort, etc. – around personal data in the connected home.

YWCA Girl’s Club Creates Cyber Safety Awareness

This post is submitted by Erum Hasan from the YWCA Girls Centre. Erum is an active member of the YWCA Girls Council, a long-time member of Hive Toronto.

Day 1:

Through funding we received from CIRA.ca, our Girls’ Centre offered summer and March Break programs to young girls to learn about technology and the many opportunities offered in this field. My peers and I wanted to use the skills and what we learned from volunteering in these digital literacy programs to create awareness on cyber safety. We were in touch with Simona Ramkisson from Hive Toronto, to work on a project together. We wanted to celebrate the International Women’s Day, which fell on March 8th. The Council collaborated with Hive Toronto to run a workshop that focused on cyber safety for the Girls Club at Sir Samuel Steele Elementary School.

In preparation for the event, our Girls’ Council gathered to discuss and review “Combating Cyber-violence for Women and Girls: Reading the Web”. This document gave us important information we used including statistics about cyber violence and helpful ways to create a safe space online.Each member of the Girls’ Council was given a specific part to deliver on the day of the presentation. We wanted feedback from our peers, so we practiced running the workshop a few times. The fun part of the rehearsal was how my peers pretended to be the younger audience to simulate the experience of delivering the actual presentation.   We were able to come up with different ways to manage their behaviours and keep them focused on task. We developed group guidelines at the beginning of the workshop; we gave our participants a chance to to suggest rules. Our rehearsal made us feel prepared, we used our teamwork skills to work together to ensure the presentation would be well delivered.

Simona Ramkisson from Hive Toronto came to the YWCA Girls Centre to provide support before the presentation. She also wanted to know what our level of knowledge was in the topic. We reviewed our lesson plan together and answered the questions we would ask our participants at our workshop. Our answers were written on sticky notes which allowed us to better organize our ideas to see any similarities and differences.

It was an amazing experience for us to have this opportunity to collaborate with another agency. Through this connection, our Council has participated in several activities and events at Mozilla. We always appreciate learning new things and doing more together.

Day 2:

IMG_1699In the morning, I learned that there were several school closures and TDSB buses were cancelled. Even though the road conditions were terrible, we were able to safely travel with our group to the school on time. Walking through the hallways and seeing the artwork for International Women’s Day made by the younger girls gave me hope. I thought to myself that this would be a great opportunity to share our message and purpose with the community. Looking at their artwork which was made up of smaller drawings for International Women’s Day showed me what a bright group of girls we would be working with.

As approximately 30 girls came and sat down in circle, I was very nervous and unsure of what to expect at first. However, as I started presenting, I gradually become calmer as I felt more connected hearing from the girls about their stories and experiences. I proceeded with more confidence. First, we introduced ourselves as members of YWCA Toronto’s Girls’ Council. I was thrilled that our Council received this opportunity to inform young girls about cyber safety and have discussions about this topic. From this experience, I was able to strengthen my leadership skills, work with a team, and learn how to collaborate. Our presentation came together and I saw how the pieces fit in the end. Our different parts were combined into a solid, well-thought, as well as cohesive piece presented by many. Often it’s challenging to work with so many people dividing up a workshop into several parts. I came to realization that we can work successfully together despite everyone’s various styles and be able to include the voices of every member in our project.

It was such a joy to hear the girls share information they learned, what surprised them, and what they appreciated about the workshop. For instance, the girls were able to recall that “73% of women are abused online” and another shared “women are 27% more likely to be abused online than men”. They recalled this information 3 hours after hearing it!

I hope we can bring this workshop to more schools across the GTA. I feel it would benefit young girls to have a space for these kinds of discussions, especially since they are growing up in a world where media has a vast influence.

My message for those who are supporting young people impacted by cyber violence is to be non-judgemental, compassionate, patient, and most importantly, listen with their heart. Our experience at Sir Samuel Steele has been inspirational for me and our Council to continue our work in advocating for more positive digital spaces and more ambitiously, a safer world for all.

phageParser: analyzing open genetic data | #mozsprint 2016

Madeleine Bonsma is a PhD student in the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto. A fellow Torontonian, we met at the Toronto Open Science Code Sprint last year when Madeleine brought phageParser. phageParser helps us understand how bacteria and archaea use CRISPR systems in natural environments.

Since then, phageParer has grown and Madeleine launched UofT coders, a Mozilla Science Study Group. I interviewed Madeleine to learn more about phageParser, CRISPR, and how you can help during our Global Sprint 2016, June 2-3.

First, what is CRISPR?

CRISPR has gained a lot of attention in the last three years because it has inspired a powerful DNA-editing technology called CRISPR-Cas9. CRISPR systems are also interesting from a more fundamental science perspective: bacteria or archaea that have CRISPR systems can “remember” viruses that have attacked them in the past by storing bits of virus DNA in their own genome.

This means that the CRISPR regions of bacteria and archaea can teach us a lot about the kind of environment those organisms came from and what kinds of foreign DNA attacks they were seeing. Comparing CRISPR systems across many organisms can also help us see if any are using CRISPR in ways we didn’t expect, or if any lifestyle features may be shared between very diverse and unrelated organisms.

What is phageParser and how did you start working on it?

We noticed that there are many published bacterial and archaeal genomes that have CRISPR systems, and they could be a huge resource for finding patterns across the many examples of CRISPR. phageParser is a tool to gather information that’s already out there related to CRISPR systems and present it in a way that other researchers and interested people can work with and use.

My supervisor, Sid Goyal, launched the project in 2014 with the help of Bill Mills. I got involved in February 2015 and things really got going at the Toronto Open Science Code Sprint, where several contributors helped get a first version of our processing workflow going.

How will phageParser help research be more collaborative and accessible?

Almost all the data we hope to incorporate into this database is already publicly available, but this tool will enable researchers without advanced bioinformatics knowledge to effectively use that data. Collaboration is already occurring in the development of the project, and we expect that being able to re-use published data more effectively will create more research and collaboration opportunities as well.

What kind of open data are you working with?

Most of the data comes from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). We are also making use of open software such as CRISPRfinder and BLAST.

What problems have you run into while working on phageParser?

An ongoing challenge is to make sure the project goals align with what people would actually want to use. Talking to CRISPR researchers has helped us reframe the project to be more user-friendly, with most of the analysis happening behind the scenes. My own lack of expertise in almost all the areas covered has been a difficulty but also a great opportunity to learn from collaborators. On a more technical note, it can be hard to deal with changing standards of data formatting, and it is often hard to decide how best to approach a particular step of the analysis.

What kind of skills do I need to help you build phageParser?

We’re looking for all kinds of skills from database design and management to user interface design, writing bioinformatics scripts in Python, interacting with APIs, consulting on scientific aims, writing documentation, and more.

How can others help you during the Mozilla Science Global Sprint, June 2-3?

During the Global Sprint we’ll be working on things from all the categories mentioned above, and specifically we’ll probably be looking at assembling a database and linking it to a GUI.

Science Hack Day + Space Apps 2016

This April 22-24th, the Mozilla Science Lab is partnering with CartoDB to host a 2 day event called Science Hack Day in Brooklyn, New York, USA. This will coincide with the international Space Apps Challenge, a global event aimed at engaging developers, designers and science enthusiasts in working with space and scientific data. Naturally, we’d love for you to join us and help spread the word!

On April 22nd, just prior to the main event days April 23-24th , we’ll be hosting a light mixer and bootcamp science fair with multiple mini-workshops where you can learn more about science data mining, pitching hackathon ideas, designing for science, working with version control and Github, and otherwise building skills for application development at the event that weekend or beyond.

To help guide projects, NASA put together some themes and challenge prompts, but we’re rather open to whatever you might propose to work on in the domains of science and code, and we’ll likely plug projects for our Global Sprint as well. Feel free to tweet @scihackdayNY with your suggestions!
