Updating and porting your add-ons to SeaMonkey 2

It’s easy!

SeaMonkey 2.0 has been out for a while, and it’s time for add-on developers to give it some love. If your add-on already works on earlier versions of SeaMonkey, you should update your add-on’s compatibility as soon as you can. If not, this is a good time to consider adding SeaMonkey compatibility and increasing your usage numbers :).

SeaMonkey 2 is a big improvement from previous releases in terms of add-on support, and Firefox extension developers will find that it’s easy, sometimes trivial, to add support for SeaMonkey in their extensions. It only took me a couple of hours to add SeaMonkey support to my own add-on (a new version in development at the moment), and this is a fairly complex extension I’m referring to. Well, that plus a few hours making an important contribution to make it possible to port it ;).

    What I think is, if Mozilla won’t start to actively favor the universal extension (those which can be run on SeaMonkey AND Firefox or Thunderbird) for example by giving grants to developers and promote them by providing, lets say, 30% places in recommended add-ons list on Mozilla Add-ons, there is no real chance to get better SeaMonkey extension support.

    Hm, it’s been almost a month since this blog item was posted, and when I try to browse https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/addon/7684 (i.e., “Fire.fm for SeaMonkey”), AMO resends me to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7684 (“Fire.fm for Firefox”). IOW, according to AMO, this extension still does *not* support SeaMonkey.

    Yeah, we haven’t updated Fire.fm yet. There are many other things that we’re trying to fix in that release, and we’ve had very little time to do anything. Sorry for that.
