  • The technical writing program is moving to being a “self service” technical writing program. Still the same great Open Badge and certificate, just less high touch 1 on 1 tutoring. More details coming soon. If you have questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact Roland, Rosana or Michael.

Upcoming releases:

  • It’s research time! Check out the research thread for Firefox 24 and if we have missed a feature please add it to the thread. Thanks to yalam96, nyselvey, and Waka_Flocka_Flame for helping out with Android research so far.
  • Firefox 24 beta 1  comes out tomorrow Friday August 9, 2013 and there is a permissions bump (see research  thread) so we’d like to finish that article today. It should be easy; it currently looks like we only have to document two new permissions: “record audio” and “control Near Field Communication.”. Let’s finish today  Thursday 8 August 2013. Interested? Edit the following article and ping roland via email (rtanglao or IRC (rolandtanglao in #sumo)

What’s happening with Firefox for Android Support July 25, 2013

Hello world. There’s a lot happening in the world of Firefox for Andoid in the SUMO (support.mozila.org) team and it’s not getting the exposure it deserves. So I am going to have a series of “What’s happening”posts. They will be happening at least once a week and will summarize what’s going on.

Current release is Firefox 22 for Android: There are no major Firefox 22 for Android issues, thanks to everybody for making this release smooth and it’s great to see overall crashing and issues decreasing.

Upcoming releases:

Firefox 23

Firefox 24

  • It’s help article day on Thursday i.e. Today July 25, 2013, help us research and do some easy edits!:
  • It’s time to research articles for Firefox 24 for Android.  Thanks to Karen and Erin the Firefox for Android roadmap is accurate!  Please use it for research: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Roadmap#Firefox_24:_Embracing_the_Ecosystem_.28Aurora.29
  • The big feature in 24 is our upcoming Android permission bump to enable some cool features: geolocation services, NFC bump and perhaps more. (why perhaps? because Firefox is on a 6 week release cycle which we call a “train” and sometimes we move features from one train to another e.g. from the FF24 train to the FF25 train).

Help us write mobile articles and we’ll make you an apprentice reviewer!

QUOTE:

We need help writing mobile (Android and Firefox OS) articles. So we’d like to experiment with a way to get more people involved without creating a review bottleneck. The idea is to let interested people quickly become Apprentice Mobile Reviewers. And since nearly every single mobile article falls into the category of articles that a reviewer can self-approve, these new reviewers will be able to write and approve as quickly as their time and interest permits.

END QUOTE

Read the whole call for SUMO mobile apprentice reviewers please. it’s easy all you need is a computer and some time!

Love to hear from you and help you get involved;  (rtanglao AT mozilla.com; irc.mozilla.org nick:rolandtanglao, I am usually in these channels: #sumo, #mobile)

MozCampEU2012: Mozilla is full of cool people like john99

mozcampeu2012 group photo-my buddy john99

I was lucky enough to be one of the people who was invited to MozCampEU2012 in Warsaw, Poland on September 8-9, 2012. And even luckier I was able to meet longtime Thunderbird contributors for sessions about Thunderbird’s transition to being community-led in November 2012. But I’ll save that for another post.

Since all Mozillians are community leaders, we need to meet our community. Not just electronically but in real life whenever we can. And not just the communities we know and love (like the Thunderbird community) but people in other Mozilla communities. Being in Thunderbird support, I have also be been involved in Firefox support. It was therefore great to meet many of the Firefox Support Mozillians in Warsaw. John99, my MozCampEU2012 buddy was one of those people I was fortunate enough to meet. In the picture above he’s in the third row from the front to right and just behind David Boswell. Despite my jetlag, we made a connection I know that will make future work together electronically even more awesome on SUMO and other Mozilla communities. Nice to make a new buddy John! Come visit me in Vancouver!

Thunderbird Support 2011 peek backward, 2012 peek forward

First a big thank-you and Happy Holidays to those who have helped support Thunderbird users at the official Get Satisfaction Thunderbird forum and the official Thunderbird knowledge base (aka SuMoMo)  as well as those who support Thunderbird at independent sites like mozillaZine, Geckozone, Thunderbird Mail DE, etc.

2011:

  • approximately 4000 topics solved, 25000 responses on the Get Satisfaction Thunderbird forum
  • Thunderbird 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
  • moved SuMoMo from Tiki Wiki to Django Kitsune software in April, now have close to 800 articles over about a dozen languages

2012:

  • recruit more contributors for Thunderbird support and Thunderbird documentation and keep existing contributors happy!
  • more Thunderbird releases every 6 weeks
  • early 2012: some tweaks to our Thunderbird customization of Get Satisfaction to make things clearer and friendlier
