No extension of the week

QA Updates

  • Moved our test cases from Litmus to moztrap
  • We lost 4 tests in the process.
  • Post 17 wants to have a day when people can play with moztrap.

  • Working on bubbling up bugs for devs past 17 should get something out this week.

Schedule and Progress

Status Updates

See the Mozilla Status Board for status updates specific to developers.

Roundtable Highlights

  • What concerns do we have, if any, about implementing an Untriaged component for Thunderbird? For almost a year Firefox has an Untriaged component which is working well for them. It is where all bug reports go that have been filed by users doing https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?format=guided (which is what ALL users get if they don’t have bugzilla privileges). Such bugs no longer go to component=General. The relevant Firefox bugs are bug 713163 and bug 713165.

Thunderbird Development

Feature Work

Modern Address Book
  • Updated my mock-up last week, and gathered some feedback on sorting and contact categorization
  • I’ll be updating my mock-up based on that feedback in the next day or so.
  • Tentative roadmap to be published this week.
  • I’ve started a little FAQ on the Ensemble GitHub wiki.
  • I’ve started developing an API proposal for contact provider connectors. A first draft will be released shortly after the roadmap goes out – maybe late this week or early next week.
    • I’m going to want feedback on this proposal – especially from people who have worked with CardDAV before.
Instant Messaging

Schedule and Progress

  • Releasing TB 16 and 10.0.8esr today.
Beta Version
  • Should be releasing Wednesday or Thursday

  • If you could run beta this month it would be Great !

Build / Release Update

  • Pymake enabled on the Windows builders (now on Daily & Earlybird & Try).
    • Faster builds 🙂
  • Linux move to CentOS 6 happened.

Web Update

    • last minute update for en-us, fr, de
  • Feature page content will be updated as well today
  • Account Provisioner gains the ability to have prices-per-email in TB16, don’t think there are any server side changes needed.

Support and Documentation

  1. TB Support Community Meeting September 22, 2012 Minutes – Tentative next meeting is Saturday October 13, 5a.m. Pacific
  2. TB16 Support Day is tomorrow Wednesday October 10, 2012! 3. 1176 new support topics (1189 one week ago ) – Media:1-7October2012-Part1of2-Community_stats_for_Mozilla_Messaging.png, Media:1-7October2012-Part2of2-Community_stats_for_Mozilla_Messaging.png
  4. See this week’s Support Appendix for full Get Satisfaction metrics and other support details

Status Updates

See the Mozilla Status Board for status updates specific to developers.

Roundtable Highlights

  • Untriaged component — What concerns do we have, if any, about implementing an Untriaged component for Thunderbird? Firefox has an Untriaged component which is working well for them for almost a year. All bug reports go there which were filed by users doing Firefox guided bug entry (which is what ALL users get if they don’t have bugzilla privileges). In other words these bugs no longer go to component=General, in fact they can’t pick a component. The relevant Firefox bugs are bug 713163 and bug 713165. Unlike Firefox, Thunderbird guided bug entry currently does allow picking component.
  • We can’t think of any concerns. (It sounds like a good idea, to let us hop on new bug filers quickly, and show them how responsive we are.)
  • How is it working for Firefox? Well, they haven’t rolled back on it so far (9 months)…
  • Two concerns:
    • 1) Do we let people pick a component? (If so, we should exclude “General”.)
    • 2) We don’t have a “Filter” component for Thunderbird.
  • wsmwk will push.

Attendees

Thunderbird Development

Feature Work

  • Box.com referral codes have landed. Woo!
Instant Messaging
  • gtalk fixes to make it easier to configure IM for gtalk have landed in TB17

Google Summer of Code Projects

App Tabs for Thunderbird
  • Overview, Blog, bug 761727
  • Aimed at bringing the App-tab concept of Firefox into Thunderbird.
  • The basic design worked, but session persistence was difficult to implement.
  • Technical issues meant the project didn’t complete.
Improving GMail Integration
  • Overview, bug 721316
  • This work was focussed on improving Thunderbird’s integration with GMail accounts
  • Atul worked primarily on reducing the duplication of email downloaded onto the user’s hard drive
  • This patch landed last week on trunk
  • Atul would like feedback on how the disk space is performing for GMail users now (note: it won’t take effect for emails already downloaded).
Get ISPDB into Production
  • Overview
  • Many bugs have been fixed and the implementation is almost complete
  • Sancus will need to do a little bit of remaining work to get this fully deployed
‘No reply’ reminder for Thunderbird
  • Overview, Status reports, Commits
  • Seems that the code has mainly completed
  • Some good videos on the Weekly Status report page
  • Code is aimed at Lightning, the bug for landing it is here: bug 778533
  • Code currently has a ui-r- from mconley, and is awaiting code review from Fallen
GSoC Summary
  • Lessons to take away:
    • It is critical that students post patches regularly to Bugzilla, or up to their Github fork, regardless of their quality. This way, the mentor can keep tabs on progress, and the student has a back-up in case disaster strikes.
    • It is also important that students are aware of how long ui review and code review takes, and budget that in to their timeline (i.e. reviews along with fixes post-review and re-reviews take at least 4 or 5 days, it’s not the type of thing you can do in 48 hours; better yet is to do reviews of work in progress code)

Schedule and Progress

Extension of the week

  • This week it’s a theme airmail that gives thunderbird a very mail/mailman/airmail look.

Marketing Updates

  • Getting ready for TB16: New feature page on web, What’s New page, blog post…
  • New TB governance: keep on looking for Engagement volunters

Build / Release Update

  • Linux builders moving to CentOS 6 sometime this week. (bug 794378)
    • To pick up updated gtk & glib versions to match mozilla-central and mozilla-aurora
    • Hence, this will be on the TB 17 train
  • Mac OS X 10.8 unit test machines are being added to comm-central and try-comm-central (at least). (bug 786177)
    • Tests may be failing initially (possibly due to address book integration), and will need investigation.
  • bug 793628 – Produce Lightning Nightly builds during Thunderbird build process
    • No Lightning nightlies recently due to CentOS 6 build dependency. Working on a solution.

Web Update

  • Start Page updated
  • Still working on bedrock/mozillians stuff, not much to report yet
  • Audited ISPDB bugs — it looks like all the pieces are done except for the actual step of making the configs accessible to Thunderbird
    • Going to file bugs to get a staging server up from IT

Roundtable Highlights

There is plenty on discussion happening on tb-planning, https://mail.mozilla.org/listinfo/tb-planning
Every time there is a relevant support discussion, that should be cross-posted on tb-planning. Same for QA and testing.

  • How do we make the discussions on tb-planning into concrete actions and documentation on consensus?
  • If we need a mechanism, we can put that in place, but it’s good if we don’t have to do that.
  • If we are not able to get some consensus decisions, tb-staff can step up, but hopefully hopefully the community will be able to do that.
  • Rkent is concerned about the governance model
  • JB is open to suggestions on other models.
  • Rkent suggests a council similar to the Seamonkey council.
  • Ludo suggests rkent as a benevilant dictator
  • Rkent is concerned about monetisation of Thunderbird in the long run in order to allow people to make a living out of it.
  • JB is not convinced that we need a board/council for Thunderbird. At least for the first releases he thinks the current model will work.
  • Mozilla will not allow selling the product, but are happy to see people making money about addons and similar initiatives. Anne-marie is looking into monitisation opportunities that work together with the governance model and Mozilla’s goals.
  • Rkent asks how can we maintain the backend in case people are mainly working on addons? * The product needs the maintainership and development.
  • Conclusion is that we need to wait and see how the current model will work for at least a release or two.
