Action Items

Schedule & Progress on Upcoming Releases

Firefox 4

Firefox 3.6.13 and 3.5.16

  • Released to the beta audience yesterday
    • 3.6.13 is throttled @ 25%
    • 3.5.16 is not throttled as AUS can’t support what we want and there are very little testers on the beta channel anyway
  • Still on schedule
  • The new billboard to encourage people to move off of 3.0 (and/or other unsupported releases) is getting finished up and will hopefully go live a week after 3.6.13

Add-on Builder 1.0a6

Input 2.1

  • Release Date: 12/9
  • Features: Ideas, Siphon by Device Types (for mobile), Better search on past releases

Fun-ness with the 2.0 release (for searches over the entire beta): sync, panorama, fast and slow

Jetpack SDK 0.10

  • major deliverables all landed or pushed off as not beta blockers (except for one for which we’re still trying to determine status)
  • product-wide reviews over the last week identified a set of remaining issues, mostly around exposure of experimental, internal, or obsolete APIs and functionality
  • remaining issues are being resolved at very high rate
  • RC1 any day now
  • track progress on blockers via bug 611250

Highlights / Notices

  • starting full outreach now for Firefox 4 product l10n, long tail isn’t actually all that long no more. 61 out of 86 locales are sign-ed off for beta, some 8 more are reasonably close. (Axel)

  • based on the Fennec Beta 3 schedule, which is targeting Dec 7th as ship, we feel it’s best to align Beta 8 with that date

Firefox Development

(from our goals):

Firefox

  • [CARRY OVER] API-Complete Jetpack
    • Joint with Jetpack team
  • [NEW] Stand up basic Firefox with Electrolysis
    • Joint with Platform
    • UI may not be functional, should launch and open a web page.

Developer Tools

  • [NEW] Ensure that Firefox 4 ships with a compatible version of Firebug
  • [NEW] Publish a roadmap for integrated developer tools in Firefox, including console, inspection, and js debugging
  • [NEW] Develop long term plan for Skywriter maintenance/support

Platform

  • Goals: Real list found here. Quick overview:
    • [ON TRACK] Finish Firefox 4 blockers.
    • [ON TRACK] Support Firefox Team to stand up a browser on Electrolysis.

GFX

  • 121 blockers
    • 0 beta8, 1 beta9, 49 betaN, 71 final
  • We hope that most of the since-b7 topcrashes have been fixed, and we’ll continue to evaluate that. Several crasher fixes have landed over the past couple of days.

Layout

  • Nothing major to report
  • No beta8 blockers
  • Still worried by trackpad/trackpoint problems on Windows laptops. If you can reproduce a problem on a laptop you own, please say so on the bugs below or file a new one

JS

Tree Management

Roundtable

  • What is our risk-tolerance for risky changes that come with big perf gains? I’m opposed to taking bug 414946 (jemalloc on mac) because of the risk, but I’m getting a lot of pushback (bsmedberg).
    • specific rule is that we’ll evaluate each case by case, but at this stage we need to know how we’ll evaluate early signs of risk vs. reward
    • stuart suggests we check it in after beta 8 freeze and watch nightlies for signs like crashes
    • beltzner/bsmedberg/pbiggar to guide a plan that helps us understand landing timeline, criteria for keeping, and what we’ll look for in terms of signs to validate assumptions about risk
  • Thinking about Firefox 4.x and Firefox 5. Timing & criteria.
    • Blizzard suggests quarterly 4.x releases, wonders if we can do that without busting addon compatibility ever quarter

  • Plugins are now painted asynchronously on Windows. This could make performance and responsiveness on slow computers a lot better. bsmedberg wants testing from nightly-users. (bug 596451).
  • In Firefox 4 beta 7 users on MacOS 10.5 (Leopard) cannot submit crash reports, and all crashes appear to be hangs/unresponsive Firefox. (bug 599475).
  • Syed in Release Engineering has been making great progress on signing the OSX builds. Won’t be ready for beta 8, but definitely before 4.0 final. We’ll need some extra help from QA to verify this all works as expected. bug 400296

SeaMonkey Meeting Details

Agenda

  • Who’s taking minutes? -> Ratty

Action Items

(who needs to do what that hasn’t been recorded in a bug) We should assign people to the open items.

NEW

OPEN

CLOSED

K.I.V.

  • Get permission from Google to use their geolocation JSON service [KaiRo]. We can still only wait on the Google front right now. Didn’t hear anything about open Geolocation service yet. No easy solution in sight.

SeaMonkey 2.0.11

open blockers (0)
blocker requests (0)
fixed (12)

  • Based on Gecko 1.9.1.16, target date December 9, see Releases.
  • Release schedule will be synchronized with the next Firefox 3.5 release (3.5.16) in early December (tentative).
  • Aqualon has been running the 2.0.11pre nightlies on Windows. Nothing unusual so far.

SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 2

open blockers (1)
blocker requests (4)
targeted (3)
fixed (38)

(Further 2.1 scheduling:)

  • Please help updating the New 2.1 Features page as we go.
  • Plans for 2.1: 6-8 weeks per milestone, b2 (feature freeze) probably in early December; final to be decided later.
    • We’ll probably close for the beta2 once SyncUI has landed.
  • Unsure how this fits Firefox 4 plans as they are still trying to get to their feature freeze.
  • Firefox 4 now officially being in early 2011, which gives us a bit more time.
    • As Firefox is now going RC in January, it makes sense to do a short-cycle b3 and try to match it with FF4RC. We can then make make b3 the final feature and string freeze, to be followed by 2.1pre.
  • Beta 1 on PPC is broken.
    • We will get 64bit boxes going soon and then we’ll switch trunk to i386/x86_64 universal builds and stop generating PPC.

Feature List, Planning

Bug statistics for last two (full) weeks: 59 new, 23 fixed, 15 triaged.

  • Fix rate is good but needs to improve, triage continues to be weak. Should do more there.
  • Good further triage targets could come out of looking at the component bug counts, pick yours!
  • Proposed SeaMonkey Triage Week
    • Aqualon added a first proposal to SeaMonkey:Triage_Week and InvisibleSmiley contributed as well. There are some open questions we need to answer.
    • INVALID is pretty easy if it’s not a bug in our code or intentional behavior For WONTFIX, if the module owner or someone from the Council says it is WONTFIX, then it is. We could have a “WONTFIX?” whiteboard marker so and module owners and council members can go through those later.
    • It is probably a good idea to group components and not do the whole product for the whole week. Perhaps we should have timetable where “champions” for the different components can be online to help.

Major wanted/needed features:

2.1

Needing help, Unowned, Stalled
  • bug 460953 kill-rdf port.
  • bug 436794 Enable Mac OS X system address book per default and add UI.
    • SM UI needed, unowned, helpwanted.
  • bug 449728 Drag tabs between windows.
  • bug 477845 Build a standalone (Gecko 2.0) Composer. [kaze]
    • kaze is currently job hunting so doesn’t have much time to spend on this.
    • bug 477840 Backport KompoZer to Composer (Depends on bug 477845).
    • kaze has done a ton of work there. We still need to work out some organizational issues. At the moment there is no active interest from MoMo for bringing standalone composer into comm-central. That’s something we (KaiRo and kaze) will have to negotiate with the Thunderbird team (dmose).
  • bug 523274 Complete new default theme icon set.
  • bug 526210 Update the icon set for the SeaMonkey Modern Theme.
    • Some proposed icons got posted, we should take a look how to get that contribution into the product.
    • The rest is unowned so far.
  • bug 507841 Port Bug 422814 – Make account configuration quick, easy, and more secure (autoconfig, Quick Account Setup).
  • bug 573538 No options for Safe-Mode.
  • bug 521159 [SeaMonkey 2.1] Port |bug 514327 Detect outdated plugins and offer upgrade path|
  • bug 87098 [SeaMonkey] Delete key should delete location bar history list entry
Active
  • bug 533908 SeaMonkey Mail: tabs not restored [misak]
    • Needs feedback from Neil.
  • bug 570004 Popup/”doorhanger” notifications [Neil]
    • Implementation moved to bug 595810.
    • Neil resumed porting add-on notifications to doorhangers, except that he can’t actually get the notifications to fire for testing purposes.
  • bug 566138 Better integration with Windows 7 taskbar
    • status/progress?
  • bug 576970 Port Sync UI to SeaMonkey trunk [InvisibleSmiley]
    • Waiting for reviews from Neil (small one) and Ian (Preferences), then only the themes (Classic) part is left.

We also should take a look at the other items on 2.1-wanted
Also the nominations need triaging.

  • We will need to take a close look at Lightning, which is mainly targeting Thunderbird.
    • Lightning 1.0 beta 1 is for SM2.0 and TB3.0, 1.0 beta 2 is for TB3.1 (Gecko 1.9.2), 1.0 beta 2 will probably be Gecko 2.0-based.
