Major Topics for This Week

4 Stars in Play Store

We hit 4 visible stars on release and 4.0 rating on beta

Fx15 Released

Lots of positive ratings. Some confusion about hybrid (phablet) UI.

Fx16 Uplift

We still have two items that need to be uplifted to Fx16. A security fix for Reader (bug 778582) and Feedback Solicitation (bug 774479).

WebApps Update

We had a great WebApps testday, which uncovered a few important bugs, as well as some UX issues. Due to several factors, we are holding WebApps from Fx16.

Observations:
Crashing (a concern with this update) isn’t being mentioned at all in the comments. we will see how this plays out over the next few days. There seems to be an issue with text input (words being duplicated, etc.)

We also have a smaller issue that is text appearing jagged in 15. Haven’t narrowed this down any, will be keeping an eye on it over the next 2-3 days.

Good Points:
The users love this release! It fixes nearly all of our main complaints from Firefox 14, plus improves startup speed significantly according to some users. Ratings are up dramatically in the past 48 hours as well.

Notices / Schedule

  • Merge day happened Monday – Nightly=18, Aurora=17, Beta=16
  • FF15.0 released this morning unthrottled, and will likely be throttled for analysis Wednesday
  • Please start re-focusing on bugs tracked for FF16 and 17
  • FF16 beta 1 went to build this morning, expected release date Thursday
  • FF17a2 updates are expected to be enabled Friday

Firefox OS

  • Most of team is in Sao Paulo at partner offices for the week
  • Status available in the usual places, listed here

Firefox Development

  • Social changes: Shane, MarkH, Jared and Felipe have been doing a great job making improvements to the social functionality, including improvements to the chat UI, performance improvements, additional sidebar features (“flyout panels”)
  • Updates to pdf.js: big list of release notes at in bug 784718
  • Download panel: a new round of patches landed to make further improvements (bug 747903, bug 748160, bug 748381, bug 760607) still disabled on Aurora 17 though
  • Tim uplifted the new tab thumbnail storage system to beta, after fixing its cache eviction. Will fix common “tab thumbnails disappear” issues.
  • Dao landed some improvements to tab dragging (move the tab rather than showing an indicator, bug 783282)
  • Dao and Neil are investigating ways to avoid unnecessary layout flushes during common UI interactions (e.g. url bar focusing bug 783103)
  • Brubeck and Yan will start full time Metro front-end development

Firefox Developer Tools

Add-on SDK

Performance

  • SUMO alerted us that they’ve received feedback that Firefox 15 Beta loads pages slower than 14. If you can reproduce a performance regression to do with loading webpages/games/etc in FF15 vs FF14, please comment in bug 784512.
  • Tim landed the new thumbnail storage so that we can finally remove the file cache usage for thumbnails (bug 754671)
  • Tim also landed preloading new tab pages in the background (bug 753448) – currently preffed off
  • Jon Coppeard landed incremental sweeping for the atoms table (bug 779183)
  • Benoit made a number of changes to the profiler
    • Added JS source view
    • Cleopatra selection will persist when changing the filter, and several minor bug fixes
    • JS only view will now filter c++ frames
    • Column info landed in the JS engine. Hoping to get it exposed to profiling and then we can work toward deminifying JS script. This should help diagnose some problems with sites like Twitter.
    • JS profiling protocol is close to landing. This will let us profile nightly/release build of Fennec, let us control features and settings which are built time right now. This will help for b2g as well.

GFX

JS

Layout

  • display list-based invalidation close to relanding (try builds available for testing, see comment 280 in bug)
  • Bugs of interest:
    • async (off-main-thread) animations enabled in content processes (bug 785657)

Media

DOM

  • CSS2Properties bindings landed.

WebAPI

Network

Plugins

Mobile

Accessibility

  • FF OS spoke (text-to-speech via pico/svox, accessfu, and the core gecko a11y engine) to the accessibility team last week! Eitan is cleaning it up now. No demo/screencast link ready yet.

Tree Management

  • 10.8 tests are now running! Thanks to kmoir for all her hard work here!
  • Capacity
    • Migration of linux-based builds to AWS continues. This has enabled us to start reimaging linux/linux64 build machines as additional win64 build machines (which also do win32 builds)
    • 40 of the 86 new tegras have been added to our test pool, bringing our total up to 257
      • turned off android-xul tests
    • Evaluating new test hardware for WinXP, Win7, Linux. Once we’re confident in the hardware, we’ll order more and migrate winxp, win7 and linux tests to the new platform
    • Re-imaging 40 old OSX 10.5 test machines as 20 winxp and 20 win7 test slaves in the meanwhile
      • FF17 no longer supports 10.5, but still have 10.5 for aurora, beta, release, ESR
    • Open question about linux64 builds/tests. Can we reduce our linux64 test capacity to use elsewhere?
      • linux64 isn’t published on our download page bug 527907
      • most users get their linux builds via their distro
      • 32-bit builds may be more popular
      • coop will be starting a newsgroup thread on this – follow up there if interested
    • If you know of other builds or tests that aren’t used, or are perma-red/orange, let us know and we can disable them until they can be fixed!

Actions from Last Week

  • Sam M to confirm whether we are using the Android Market’s new privacy policy field
  • Blassey to confirm that we have a locked in plan of record for other localizations
    • Plan: ship only native UI and mobile over-ridden strings in the mulilocale builds (all others will be en-US only) which allows us to ship many more locales (goal: all android supported locales). Non-en-US toolkit and platform strings will be downloaded in the background as needed.
  • Matt and Benjamin to chase down details about how broad the latest adobe chemspill is (i.e. should we change our SUMO advice around 11.2, 10.3?)
    • Current documentation is suggesting the latest 11.3 since it is known to be secure. Users experiencing issues are encouraged to try disabling protected mode rather than downgrading to a possibly insecure version of Flash.
    • We still do not have solid data around 11.4 release of Flash. By end of week we hope to have enough data to either update our existing document or to make the decision not to push 11.4.

Schedule & Progress on Upcoming Releases

  • Firefox 15 beta 6 is underway, should be going out to the beta channel late today, early tomorrow if QA sign off isn’t ready yet
  • Firefox 15 SignOffs meeting notes — we are thumbs up for release

Roundtable Highlights

usul: Would like to adjust the meeting format – much broken audio made it difficult to understand exactly what, but sounded like wanted individual who is up to what in the wiki to make it more information for contributors

rkent: What are we going to talk about in Warsaw?
roland: Working out plan for his section (support) on Etherpad

rkent: Can Mozilla provide clear statement about who and how much time Mozilla staff will put on TB so that the community knows what they can work with?

standard8: JB was planning to post something, he’s on vacation right now

… ongoing discussion about who knows what about ongoing Mozilla staff levels, and that Mozilla is not sharing this with the community

rkent: would like warsaw meetings to cover hearing from non-developer people what they currently do, and how the forward plan covers getting that done in future.

jenzed/abourcier/ludo: Some of those things on etherpad already, as a basis for Warsaw discussion; not everybody has fleshed this out yet

Notices / Schedule

  • Final Beta going to build today
  • Release Sign-Off meeting is tomorrow (Wed) at 10am PT
  • Final 15 build on Friday, release Tues 8/28
  • Merge day is Monday 8/27

Firefox OS

Firefox Development

  • Social feature fixes from this week: performance improvements (bug 777176), preliminary support for “chat” UI (bug 779686)
  • MattN landed a provisional desktop UI for signing in to websites: bug 764213. Off by default, but it’s the first step towards built-in Persona support

Firefox Developer Tools

Add-on SDK

  • Putting the finished touches to our repack work
  • Had to ask for a weakmap change (bug 761620) to be backed out but we’ve resolved the problem now so it can land
  • Work week in London next week

Performance

  • Ludovic Hirlimann blogged about spotlight taking a lot of time indexing the Firefox network ‘Cache’ directory (bug 718910). If you experience this problem please try the solution in the bug and comment back with results.
  • Tim Taubert blogged about reducing new-tab jank.
  • Nick Hurley landed a change to reduce our maximum cache size to 350 megabytes (bug 709297).
  • The Necko team is working hard on addressing significant problems in the networking code. These problems are tricky and will take a while to fix but should have big payoffs.

GFX

  • Getting rid of Java screenshotting in Fennec is coming along. We now have the ability to draw tiles at multiple resolutions!
    • As a proof of life, behold this video: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/10523664/output.webm
    • Don’t evaluate it for performance; this is just us showing that we can now draw at different resolutions!
    • Drawing is now interruptable at a tile-by-tile basis
    • Can paint at low/current or both resolution at once and could be controlled by a heuristic
    • Lots of UX work ahead of us, but we’re laying a good technical foundation.
  • OMTC on non-mobile platforms is also getting closer.
    • On the graphics branch, we have created a Compositor API that, when completed, only needs system-specific (ie D3D9, D3D10) functions implemented to enable OMTC on a given platform.
    • Already up and running on OpenGL with OS X.
    • Some more foundation needs to be created, but after that we can start implementing OMTC on Windows!

JS

Layout

  • see thread on dev-platform about sharing with W3C test suites
  • Bug fixes of interest:
    • bug 697230 – Make style image decode block onload
    • bug 341604 – implement HTML5 sandbox attribute for iframe element
    • bug 308801 – implement -moz-box-sizing for min/max-height property

Media

  • Just landed support for hardware decoding (a.k.a. platform decoders) on Android ICS/JB: Bug 782508.
GB support should be following in another week or so. Playback performance on ICS/JB currently is ok, but not stellar. Once we add GB support, we will work to improve the performance. This patch should work across all Android hardware phones running ICS/JB — however, some hardware implementations are known to have bugs, which we will need to work around. If you try this code on your ICS/JB device and it doesn’t work, please file a bug.
  • Currently targeting to release WebRTC in Firefox 18 (not behind a pref).

DOM

  • DOM/WebAPI/Servo work week this week in Mountain View.

WebAPI

  • work week in Mountain View this week
  • dealing with all remaining open app permission questions
  • hosting a meeting of web & browser developers on Thursday; basically: “how to fix App Cache”

Network

Identity

Plugins

Mobile

  • Bumping required SDK to 16 (JellyBean) for accessibility features

Accessibility

  • Android SDK has been bumped to 16 on Mozilla Central – via bug 783706. This is required for Jellybean a11y support which has landed on inbound.

Tree Management

  • Turning off OS X Leopard / 32-bit tests bug 773120
    • 10.5 is desupported on Gecko/Firefox 17+, these tests are being turned off
    • 10.5 was the only place where we ran the 32-bit parts of the binaries. Do we need to start running 32-bit tests on 10.6? What’s the priority of this vs. other things?
  • Capacity
    • We do ~137 hours of builds+ tests per checkin; we do a checkin every 5-7 minutes
      • That’s 4 years of tests per day.
    • if you know of any build or test that is being run, and being hidden because it constantly fails, please let us know. We’ll disable it to stop wasting CPU time, and file bugs to track getting fixed
    • good news:
    • all B2G, B2G desktop, nativefennec builds being built on AWS since a few weeks ago – looking good
      • all Linux Firefox builds should be sent to AWS early next week
      • this will allow us to reimage linux32, linux64 machines as additional win64 builders
    • see dev.tree-management “wait times” posts for more details.

Security

Stability Report

  • stability@mozilla.org mailing list for crash issues.

Socorro

  • Rapid beta work should release around the week of Sept 10th

Desktop

  • New Flash release – 11.4.402.265 out today
    • Hoping it addresses further issues.
    • Marcia/Juan verifying symbols uploaded and we are receiving crash data.
      • Confirmed OOOP crash on Win 7 with .265 Firefox beta
      • Mac crash report with .265 so far is giving no report found
  • Hangs
    • Tracking issues with hangs for some time.
    • bsmedberg wrote up Socorro/Hang Processing Proposal for a better way to process hangs.
    • Socorro team says we can have this mid-Q4. bsmedberg is thinking about custom handling of hang reports from nightly/aurora/(beta?) until then to produce useful data, bypassing socorro.
  • Trunk
    • High crash rate
    • Top crash on the trunk resolved fixed then reopened – bug 781265.
    • bug 782981 now fixed but polluting the stats.
    • New bugs
      • bug 784365 runtime abort in nsIFrame::BuildDisplayListForChild

Mobile

  • Top crash on mobile bug 776334 fixed and uplifted to beta.

  • Mozilla Welcome Video: Amie Tyrrel will be sharing more details on onboarding shortly, but she could use some help with a “Welcome to Mozilla” video! It’s just a matter of recording yourself saying “Welcome to Mozilla” in your local language. Post your submissions to Flickr with the hashtag #welcomemozillians by Tuesday, August 21st. We’ll aim to include your video in our montage of Global Mozillians – we can’t guarantee all submissions will be included, but we’ll try! We’ll be sharing this video along with Mozilla’s new onboarding tool in coming months. If you have questions please email amie at mozilla dot com.
  • This week will be the last Grow Mozilla discussion before MozCamp in Warsaw, so this is a good opportunity to come by and ask any questions you have about hosting a session or how to get the most of attending.
