Release Engineering

  • tegras
    • tl;dr: still 0 in production
    • bear pulled an all-nighter to get staging reliably green. we then spent the rest of the day checking this in, rolling it out, and finally switching some tegras to run in production.
    • at this point we noticed/remembered that bear’s testing staging environment was running against thursday’s nightly, with old devicemanager code.
    • assuming we don’t regress anything further, we’ve solved 1 of 2 blockers to going live. we’ll be working on incorporating the devicemanager changes and testing against the new shared id today.

QA

Top 5 crashes:

1)libz.so@0x14b4 – 299 crashes

Related bug: Bug 626051
It is #1 top crasher in Fennec 4.0b4pre for the last week.
There was a big spike for this crash in the last 3 days(81 crashes to be exact). Steve Kondik commented that this is mostly on CM7(Gingerbread version). CM isnt released yet and hence they re still testing their nightly. Hopefully this should be fixed in final release.

Related bug: Bug 615993
It is #2 top crasher in Fennec 4.0b4pre for the last week.
This is an armv6 crash. We dont really care about that. But happens on motorola droid 2 devices as well.
Stuart and Kevin report that they saw it while surfing wiki.mozilla.org. Talked to kevin but cannot reproduce it.

3)EqualityCompiler::update – 13 crashes

Related bug: Bug 626361
It is a new crash signature. Crashes first appeared in Fennec 4.0b4pre/20110115.
It is #3 top crasher in Fennec 4.0b4pre for the last 3 days.

4)nsWindow::OnDraw – 7 crashes

Related bug: Bug 612546
Crashes first appeared in the build – Fennec 4.0b4pre 20110115

Blocker Report

Firefox 4 Beta

Firefox Development

Platform

GFX

  • 10 hardblockers
  • Downloaded blacklist is in beta 10. bug 625160
  • OpenGL acceleration is disabled on OS X 10.5 because QuickDraw plugins don’t get along with OpenGL. bug 583499
  • The fixes we have for DirectWrite I/O causing huge startup times have all landed (bug 602792). If there are remaining issues, please open new bugs.
  • Repeating our call from last week: People who experience the following hardblocker bugs, please contact Joe or Bas:
    • bug 603134 – OS X only – Firefox/Minefield doesn’t render any content in new windows until you move the window. This can also manifest itself as random parts of the window refreshing at inconsistent times.
      • This is a Mac OS X bug. We’re trying to work out what hardware is affected by it.
      • Please contact joe on irc or joe@mozilla.com if you see this.
    • bug 603793 – Windows only – Menus disappearing, often on submenu mouse over.
      • We can’t reproduce this and don’t know anyone directly who does.
      • If you can reproduce this, contact Bas on irc, or bschouten@mozilla.com.

Layout

  • Blockers down to 49 (14 hard).
    • Scary stuff remaining: border-radius clipping
  • Also looking into scrolling perf regressions
  • A pretty invasive change to plugin rendering is in the works, hope to have it working around the end of this week, reviewed and landed next week. Will definitely need beta coverage.

Content

  • 20 hardblockers left. Good progress in the bulk of those (some plugin bugs desperately need attention, working on that).
    • bug 627729 is unowned, but it’s not a Firefox issue (hotmail change).

Tree Management

  • Downtime Wednesday 1am-5am Pacific for mac64 -> mac work (bug 600931)
    • Required to remove manual steps in release automation
  • FYI 10.6 screen resolution to happen Wednesday between 6am-8am
    • new talos jobs will be re-triggered for new baseline
    • no downtime needed
  • FYI Win7 slaves to have Nvidia drivers update and DirectX install will happen Thursday between 6am-9am
    • new talos jobs will be re-triggered for new baseline
    • no downtime needed

  • Trunk: Pretty stable with 2.59 crashes per 100 ADUs (2011/01/24) – 71K users
  • Nominations queue is at 75. Need to get through noms quickly to identify serious crashes and regressions.

Roundtable

  • Discussion about betaN/beta 11 contingency plan mentioned in schedule/notices above

Feature Work

Account Provisioner:

  • Contracts continue to be worked on.
  • We’re also working on making a version that’s bundled with TB for wider testing.

Pluggable Mail Stores (bug 402392):

Experiments

Thunderbird Conversations
  • Quiet week, more bugfixes, but no more bug reports, so the count is slowly going down.
  • If you are checking out Thunderbird Conversations from GitHub, read this blog announcement.
  • If you want to help, check out the bug tracker.
  • Fallen has been looking into Lightning notifications support in Thunderbird Conversations.
Thunderbird Sync
  • Still looking to put together a release in the next couple of weeks

Trunk (Miramar) Development

  • Active branches.
  • addon manager notifies user of incompatible addons
  • 3.3a2 cut, expecting to release on Thursday.
  • Help on fixing blockers would be very useful and appreciated, see this list of higher priority bugs.
  • blocking criteria :
    • Alpha n -> Serious usability issues.
    • After -> no real criteria, regression/usability issues as usual.

Thunderbird Stability & Security Releases

  • 3.1.8 code freeze today
  • Bug Lists: 3.1
  • Crash fixes for the most of it
Major updates to 3.1

QA Updates

  • Testing 3.3a2 in progress
  • Joshua Cranmer has patches that fix most of the news uri handling in TB. This makes it possible to use news:// or nntp:// urls. To make sure we aren’t regressing he’s built a try build and need people using Thunderbird as a news reader to test these kinds of urls.
  • Testing of 3.1.8 will begin once we have builds.

Marketing Updates

  • PR Update: A few articles on Thunderbird extensions conversation view and 1
  • Minutes from Web Task force meeting
  • Perfect UI consistency will take a long time to achieve. Will talk more at the all-hands.
  • ADUs – back to high of 6.7MM total adus, 81% on Thunderbird 3.x
  • Next:
    • All Hands
    • Funnel cake summaries/preso
    • 3.1.8 and 3.3a2

Infrastructure Update

  • More builders have been added and more to come
  • Unittest on Fedora for try (ThunderbirdTest)
  • New 2048 bits build signing keys:
  • Fix the annoying random-orange test_nsIProcess.js bug : bug 620101

Build / Release Update

  • Thunderbird 3.3a2 build 1
  • ccache issues resolved

Web Update

  • kitsune development instance for sumomo @ http://ochoa.sj.mozillamessaging.com for now
    • Quite a few changes need to be made, mostly in templates/logos/strings to switch from “Firefox”-centric to Thunderbird, but so far probably no Python changes. Not final!

Notices / Schedule

Firefox 4

  • we have fixed 90 hard blockers since the last code freeze
  • there are 70 hard blockers remaining marked betaN+ which require beta coverage
    • identify to-be-completed work requiring more than 3 days of nightly coverage, and mark those [risky]
    • need to identify 1 front end (johnath?) and 1 platform (damons/sayrer?) representative who can help make a call about what content must be in upcoming beta(s) and provide ETAs, have that person co-ordinate with Christian/Beltzner for schedule
  • beta10 proposal: code freeze this Friday to get coverage on 90+ hard blockers fixed since b9
    • need to identify other work required for that freeze (see stability report, below!)
    • need to identify if there is [risky] work that should wait until after code freeze so it has proper nightly soaking time

Firefox 3.6.14 and 3.5.17

  • Blocker code freeze is tonight
  • Making the “scary” advertised update for 3.0 users live today

Firefox Development

Platform

(there is a team-by-team goals breakdown, as well)

  • [MISSED] Finish Firefox 4 blockers.
  • [DONE] Support Firefox Team to stand up a browser on Electrolysis.
  • [MISSED] Ship Firefox 4 final with layers composition accelerated using:
    • OpenGL on Mac OS X;
      • This is turned on by default for all supported hardware, and there were few blocking bugs by the end of the year.
    • Direct3D on Windows.
      • This is turned on by default for all supported hardware, and there were few blocking bugs by the end of the year.
  • [MISSED] Ship Firefox 4 final with content accelerated using Direct2D on Windows Vista/7.
      • This is turned on by default for all supported hardware, and there were few blocking bugs by the end of the year.
  • [MISSED] Ship Firefox 4 final with better Opentype font feature support using Harfbuzz on all tier-1 platforms, and text rendering performance equal to or better than Firefox 3.6.
    • We landed Linux Harfbuzz support before the end of the year, and there are no known text rendering regressions.
  • [MISSED] Ship Firefox 4 final with full WebGL 1.0 support turned on by default on all platforms that support OpenGL.
    • We missed this goal because our WebGL implementation didn’t pass all parts of the WebGL testsuite, which is required for “full WebGL 1.0 support.” However, it is turned on by default for all supported hardware.
  • [DONE] Integrate Opentype santizer library
  • [MISSED] Play back video on Fennec without blocking on main content thread
  • [DONE] Integrate codec ARM optimizations
  • [MISSED] Ship indexedDB – indexedDB is done and landed, has been for some time. Minor bugfixing ongoing, but nothing beyond the norm.
  • [MISSED] Ship HTML5 parser – Done, just didn’t have anything to ship it in.
  • [MISSED] Ship HTML5 forms (current set) – Done, just didn’t have anything to ship it in.
  • [MISSED] Ship GC compartments work – Done (though some bugfixing and GC work remains), just didn’t have anything to ship it in.
  • [MISSED] Proof of concept implementation of a proxy based DOM binding – Plan in place, but no work done here yet.
  • [MISSED] 30% performance improvment on the Cal_* tests in Zimbra
  • [DONE] Performance 15% improved over Oct 1 Sunspider perfomance

Improved over 30%.

  • [DONE] Performance 15% improved over Oct 1 v8 performance

Improved over 30%.

  • [MISSED] Continuous ARMv7 Android and Maemo JS Shell regression and performance testing in place

Have much better ARM testing than we used to, but not quit the JS shell regression tests we were hoping for.

  • [MISSED] Drive blocker list to zero. [This was a super-stretch goal]
  • [DONE] Develop implementation plan for OOP content accessibility. [Note it may change once we ramp up again post-FF4]
  • [DONE] Fix and ship multi-process plugins on Mac
  • [MISSED] Fix and ship asynchronous plugin painting on all plaforms
  • [DONE] Fix and ship content processes on Fennec

GFX

  • Downloaded graphics blacklist bug 625160 is in review, will land this week.
  • People who experience the following hardblocker bugs, please contact Joe or Bas:

Layout

  • 17 hardblockers, 37 softblockers. (9 betaN blockers.) Disappointing that the total count hasn’t gone down over the last week. But we’re making progress on the hard issues … the scary stuff is being fixed or at least understood.

Content

Content component hardblocker list at 25 (content team list down from 22 to 14 since last week).

Tree Management

  • colo outage Friday night
    • caused by AC failure in MPT. More details after IT do post-mortem with vendor
    • tree closure for almost 5 hours – from Friday 8pm PST – Sat 0:45am PST
    • if you still see weirdness (like the double builds problem), please file bug in mozilla.org/Release Engineering.

Stability Report

  • Beta9
    • Around 2.45 crashes per ADU for ~1 million beta users.
    • Similar to beta8 levels.
  • Trunk
    • Many regressions on the trunk.
    • Triage with crash team today and identify blockers.
