Firefox Development

(from our goals):

Firefox

  • [CARRY OVER] API-Complete Jetpack
    • Joint with Jetpack team
  • [NEW] Stand up basic Firefox with Electrolysis
    • Joint with Platform
    • UI may not be functional, should launch and open a web page.

Developer Tools

  • [NEW] Ensure that Firefox 4 ships with a compatible version of Firebug
  • [NEW] Publish a roadmap for integrated developer tools in Firefox, including console, inspection, and js debugging
  • [NEW] Develop long term plan for Skywriter maintenance/support

Platform

  • Goals: Real list found here. Quick overview:
    • [ON TRACK] Finish Firefox 4 blockers.
    • [ON TRACK] Support Firefox Team to stand up a browser on Electrolysis.

GFX

  • Post-beta 7 builds are *very* crashy.
    • A lot of this is probably due to bug 611389 and bug 611595, the latter of which does not yet have a patch.
    • These are coming to the forefront most likely due to the asynchronous layer-based plugin drawing changes that Benjamin Smedberg landed post-b7.

Layout

  • 1 beta8 blocker (editor, new regression)
  • Breakdown of all blockers:
    • 5 Video/Audio
    • 18 Widget
    • 10 SVG
    • 4 Editor
    • 82 other
  • Touchpad/trackpoint driver issues:

JS

  • a few small ES5 bugs fixed, many more remain, strict mode eval is still the last big-ticket item
  • various tracing/methodjit profiling improvements to ensure we use the tracer when it’s a speedup, still more work to do
  • starting to focus on blocker count now, overall numbers dropping

Tree Management

  • Any objections to 3h releng downtime Wednesday morning from 6am-9am PST?

Roundtable

Crash Summary

  • Beta7
    • Yesterday over 600K users with a crash ratio of 3.25%
    • Flash crash at #3 and several hangs in the top 10. Similar number of instances of hangs and plugin related crashes to beta6.
    • Many reports of crashes on twitter, particularly around the inability to submit oop crashes.
    • We reviewed the top 20 crashes, some new nominations for 2.0.
  • Trunk
    • Explosive crash situation with drivers which started on the 11th. All problems are logged but no luck reproducing internally.
    • Jumped from 2700 crashes/day to over 9300 with the same number of users.
    • Issues in progress – some patches checked in already.
    • Need to get the crash numbers down for beta8.

Product Status Updates

Firefox 4

We Shipped Beta 7

  • … and it’s awesome!
  • Next up: Beta 8!
    • Schedule will be quicker for these ones, they aren’t landmark releases the way beta 7 was, they are incremental progressions as we clamp down blockers
      • If you can’t come up with a good reason why a bug should go into beta 8 instead of beta 9 → not a beta 8 blocker
    • Beta 8 schedule will be discussed in tomorrow’s development call and wednesday’s product call, each at 11am PST.

A quick list of Firefox 4 triage queries is available:

Firefox 3.6 & 3.5

  • Code freeze for 3.6.13 and 3.5.16 is this Thursday, 2010-11-18 @ 11:59 PST
  • Nag emails and blocker reports will be sent out today
  • Plan to final ship on Thursday, December 9th

Mobile Firefox

  • Beta 3 code freeze is still next Tuesday, November 23
  • Firefox Home 1.0.4 is now in the app store

Thunderbird

  • Mac 32 & 64 bit builds expected today and tomorrow
  • We are preparing a 3.3a1 release and are looking for some help on the testing side
    • Alpha builds start this week

Drumbeat

  • Universal Subtitles: 2,856 videos subtitled. Need help to reach their 10,000 videos by Jan 1 target.
  • Drumbeat Festival follow-up: early work started on 4 new Festival projects.
  • Lightning talk on Festival coming next week.

Speakers

The limit is 3 minutes per speaker. It’s like a lightning talk, but don’t feel that you have to have slides in order to make a presentation.

  • Plugins are now painted asynchronously on Windows. This could make performance and responsiveness on slow computers a lot better. bsmedberg wants testing from nightly-users. (bug 596451).
  • In Firefox 4 beta 7 users on MacOS 10.5 (Leopard) cannot submit crash reports, and all crashes appear to be hangs/unresponsive Firefox.

Questions and Concerns

  • SUMO – any word on when the Firefox menu will be finalized on all platforms? Basically I’m trying to figure out when we can confidently update support articles. Will this be possible before RC?

SeaMonkey Meeting Details

Agenda

  • Who’s taking minutes? -> Ratty

Action Items

(who needs to do what that hasn’t been recorded in a bug) We should assign people to the open items.

NEW

OPEN

CLOSED

K.I.V.

  • Get permission from Google to use their geolocation JSON service [KaiRo]. We can still only wait on the Google front right now. Didn’t hear anything about open Geolocation service yet. No easy solution in sight.

SeaMonkey 2.0.9

  • SeaMonkey 2.0.9 SHIPPED on October 20th.
  • Synchronized with Firefox 3.5.14.

SeaMonkey 2.0.10

open blockers (0)
blocker requests (0)
[1] (2)

  • SeaMonkey 2.0.10 is a chemspill release SHIPPED on October 28th to fix bug 607222.
  • Synchronized with Firefox 3.5.15.
  • 2.0.10 had a turnaround time of just about 24 hours from “let’s get going on building” until “it’s shipped and public” – even though we had some build automation system hiccups.
  • Thanks to Callek for help on the build pocess of both those release.

SeaMonkey 2.0.11

open blockers (0)
blocker requests (0)
fixed (8)

  • Based on Gecko 1.9.1.16, target date TBD, see Releases.
  • Release schedule will be synchronized with the next Firefox 3.5 release (3.5.16) in early December (tentative).

SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 1

targeted (1)
fixed (97)

  • Has been SHIPPED on October 20th, ~3500 downloads so far, ~500 ADU [2].

SeaMonkey 2.1 Beta 2

open blockers (1)
blocker requests (2)
targeted (2)
fixed (23)

(Further 2.1 scheduling:)

  • Please help updating the New 2.1 Features page as we go.
  • Plans for 2.1: 6-8 weeks per milestone, b2 (feature freeze) probably in early December; final to be decided later.
  • Unsure how this fits Firefox 4 plans as they are still trying to get to their feature freeze.
  • Firefox 4 now officially being in early 2011, which gives us a bit more time.
  • Beta 1 on PPC is broken.
    • We will probably seek to EOL it by getting i386/x86_64 universal builds up somehow.

Feature List, Planning

Bug statistics for last two (full) weeks: 55 new, 22 fixed, 8 triaged.

  • Fix rate is good but needs to improve, triage continues to be weak. Should do more there.
  • Good further triage targets could come out of looking at the component bug counts, pick yours!
  • How about a triage week to get help from the community?
    • It would be good to get some input and possibly help from Anthony Hughes (Mozilla QA).
    • tonymec or InvisibleSmiley would know about the process.
    • Aqualon will setup a wiki-page at Proposed SeaMonkey Triage Week to collect ideas and get a plan until the next meeting on 2010-11-16.

Major wanted/needed features:

2.1

Needing help, Unowned, Stalled
  • bug 460953 kill-rdf port.
  • bug 436794 Enable Mac OS X system address book per default and add UI.
    • SM UI needed, unowned, helpwanted.
  • bug 449728 Drag tabs between windows.
  • bug 477845 Build a standalone (Gecko 2.0) Composer. [kaze]
    • kaze is currently job hunting so doesn’t have much time to spend on this.
    • bug 477840 Backport KompoZer to Composer (Depends on bug 477845).
    • kaze has done a ton of work there. We still need to work out some organizational issues. At the moment there is no active interest from MoMo for bringing standalone composer into comm-central. That’s something we (KaiRo and kaze) will have to negotiate with the Thunderbird team (dmose).
  • bug 523274 Complete new default theme icon set.
  • bug 526210 Update the icon set for the SeaMonkey Modern Theme.
    • Some proposed icons got posted, we should take a look how to get that contribution into the product.
    • The rest is unowned so far.
  • bug 507841 Port Bug 422814 – Make account configuration quick, easy, and more secure (autoconfig, Quick Account Setup).
  • bug 573538 No options for Safe-Mode.
  • bug 521159 [SeaMonkey 2.1] Port |bug 514327 Detect outdated plugins and offer upgrade path|
Active
  • bug 533908 SeaMonkey Mail: tabs not restored [misak]
    • no movement.
  • bug 570004 Popup/”doorhanger” notifications [Neil]
    • Implementation moved to bug 595810.
    • Done: Drop local copy of toEM; Break out addonInstallBlocked into its own method; Add support for completed and failed addon installation notifications.
  • bug 566138 Better integration with Windows 7 taskbar
    • no progress at the moment.
  • bug 576970 Port Sync UI to SeaMonkey trunk [InvisibleSmiley]
    • Updated to include latest changes; waiting for reviews from IanN and Neil.

We also should take a look at the other items on 2.1-wanted
Also the nominations need triaging.

  • We will need to take a close look at Lightning, which is mainly targeting Thunderbird.
    • Lightning 1.0 beta 1 is for SM2.0 and TB3.0, 1.0 beta 2 is for TB3.1 (Gecko 1.9.2), 1.0 beta 2 will probably be Gecko 2.0-based.
