• As noted in the Mozilla Hacks article, the new Aurora release offers a collection of web developer tools to help people dive into the CSS of their pages.
• The Orion project noted that last week’s new Firefox release includes the Orion code editing component for use with the Scratchpad feature. You’ll need to toggle a preference to see it in the release, but it’s turned on by default in the new Aurora.

• Tomorrow 8 goes out the door, Beta becomes 9, Aurora becomes 10, Nightly becomes 11
  • Remember: 8 has a bunch of smarts around third-party add-ons, including some new UI, so even with beta behind us we’re gonna hear some surprise and learn a lot in the first 24 hours.
  • But we think it means our add-on compatibility story will get a lot better (and maybe our user experience, too, for many users!)
  • Firefox 3.6.24 is going out the door tomorrow as well
  • Firefox 3.6.x → Firefox 8 advertised update is currently planned for 2011-11-17

The bigger issues

• Will Java front-end be feasible? Doug T. is driving toward an initial pros/cons analysis over the next week
• Flash support will land on nightly in the next few days, need to evaluate and set criteria for whether it would be good enough to ship (Note, this is smartphones only, because it’s Gingerbread and earlier, not Honeycomb)
• Startup shrink continues. We’re capturing baseline measurements for mem usage and responsiveness so that we can track optimization wins. We are also looking at analysis of metrics across release channel builds.

Top three customer issues and plan to fix

• Startup/stability; 38% of 1 & 2-star ratings on Android Market are “slow/unstable”; startupshrink project is the plan to fix
• Other performance themes: page loading performance and scrolling/panning performance; getting quit in the background; memshrink project is the plan to fix

Just landed in Aurora for Firefox 9

• Major tablet UX refresh – good feedback on input so far

• We’re shipping tomorrow for Firefox 3.6.23.
  • We expected the 3.6 release to lag by a few days, but some prodigious QA and RelEng efforts seem to have us lined up to get it out for simulship. \o/

• Performance testing, competitive analysis, and goal-setting are in progress, driven by Erin and Jay. Areas include:

Friends of the Tree

• QA team nominates Gabriela Montagu (:gabriela) for her work in testing Fennec. She has been valiant in testing new territories on Android with mobile devices and continues to assist with tracking and examining issues raised in mobile meetings.
• SUMO wants to thank cor-el, TonyE (aka Quarantine) and the-edmeister for fearlessly taking on question-answering head-on for the last 4 years! That’s over 100000 posts between them.

Product Status Updates

Firefox Future (7, 8, 9)

• We’re shipping tomorrow!
  • Watch the usual places for logistics details, but really, it ain’t no thing.
• That also means tomorrow is migration day – beta becomes 8, aurora becomes 9, nightly becomes 10.

Firefox Current (3.6, 6.0)

• We’re shipping tomorrow for Firefox 3.6.23.
  • We expected the 3.6 release to lag by a few days, but some prodigious QA and RelEng efforts seem to have us lined up to get it out for simulship. \o/

Mobile Firefox

• We’re shipping tomorrow!
• Performance testing, competitive analysis, and goal-setting are in progress, driven by Erin and Jay. Areas include:
  • start-up (cold and warm)
  • panning
  • page-load
• Architectural options, including moving some of the front-end into Java, are being explored and prototyped, driving by Dougt
  • See DougT’s blog post for more information.
• Firefox 9 will ship with an awesome/splendid new UI built for tablets

Thunderbird

The next release of Thunderbird ships tommorow!
