Development Updates

Firefox

( Projects | Status | Goals | People )

Firefox 3.6 (Namoroka)

  • No more front-end beta blockers (bug queries).
  • moving on to remaining 3.6 blockers so that we’re in a good position to ship this quarter

Firefox Future

  • ongoing theme development work for Firefox 3.7 and 4.0, discussions in dev-apps-firefox
  • targeting find-tab-in-awesomebar for Firefox 3.7
  • prioritizing projects for Firefox 3.7 work this week, watch this space for more!

Gecko

  • Last week, on Tuesday, we attempted to freeze for 1.9.2 beta 1. There were several remaining issues at the close of the usual dev meeting, but the consensus seemed to be that we were good to freeze. Still, two bugs (bug 517355 and bug 517909) kept us from freezing and we’re still working on one of them. The last one is a perf regression that is taking the time of Jason Orendorff, Boris, and Andreas. Andreas produced a couple of patches that will hopefully fix the problem, but we need to see numbers today to know for sure.
  • At today’s CrashKill we will go over top crash assignments again. Also, we may be at a point where this meeting isn’t necessary as we’re tracking crashes closely now. We’ll have that discussion then.
  • Blockers:
    • P1: 3
    • P2: 90
    • P3: 0

Developer Tools

Add-ons

Webdev

  • Plugin Check goes live tommorrow. Our previous blog post generated a lot of useful feedback — thank you! Please take a look at our test server and see if you still have any thoughts on how to improve it. Read more about the web ui or the web service.
  • Jetpack gallery is nearing its beta launch. Check it out and if you have feedback let us know.
  • IT and Webdev will have on-site training tomorrow for optimizing and maintaining Sphinx, which powers custom search for AMO and SUMO. Will write a blog post summarizing what we learn.
  • Les Orchard is in town

L10n

  • L10n presentation summaries from Prague
  • L10n presentation summaries from Chile
  • Ongoing work with l10n for both web and product for FF 3.6 and Fennec
  • L10n localizer reports coming soon
  • Feedback from Prague is that Localizers are feeling much better about the patches going in to 3.6, compared to 3.5. In particular not as much back and forth. Partly this would be due to 3.7 not being too far out and thus “no” is a better answer.

Foundation Updates

  • Get involved with the new Get Involved page by adding contribution opportunities to the staging wiki page and by using buttons to promote the page. Contact david at mozillafoundation dot org if you’d like to talk more about this.

SeaMonkey Meeting Details

Agenda

  • Who’s taking minutes? -> Ratty

Action Items

(who needs to do what that hasn’t been recorded in a bug) We should assign people to the open items.

NEW

  • Kairo to contact MoFo on doing a SeaMonkey 2.0 press release. Current Status: talked with MoCo presscontact, said they can’t do anything that costs money, but fell good about forwarding a roughly two-paragraph note to their contacts.

OPEN

  • Get permission from Google to use their geolocation JSON service [KaiRo]. Contact at Google says: “We don’t have a good estimate for when GLS will be opening up more broadly, but I will be sure to let you know when we take that step. Sorry that I can not be more specific at this time.” – We can only wait right now.
    • KaiRo emailed Google again more than 2 weeks ago, no reply yet.

CLOSED

SeaMonkey 2.0 Final

open blockers (7)
blocker requests (0)
open wanted (28)
wanted requests (6)

  • We need to get blockers fixed, some are unowned as of now and need to either get assigned and fixed fast, or to consider to drop or push back release.
    • Besides bug 382870, we have three other unassigned blockers: bug 518203, bug 520006, bug 520480.
    • The first one is quite an issue for Mac users according to stefanh. We need to check with stefanh on options for working round this bug.
    • Mnyromyr will look into the Mac-sidebar-blocker tonight.
    • [KaiRo] I feel safe on generating RC1 without 483282 (venkman perf hit) fixed, btw – I’d like to get it fixed for final, but with Mnyromyr backing out the core patch for it from trunk, I doubt we can do much by 1.9.1.4 and SM2.0 final.
    • [mcsmurf] bug 452465 will be checked in today bug 471346 won’t make 2.0, I’m quite sure of that 2.0.x maybe then.
    • [InvisibleSmiley] I think it would be nice to have some user feedback on the Master Password workaround so if it can be done I’d like to have it for RC1 (only depends on reviews).
    • After code freeze, KaiRo will probably go through the wanted+ bugs and cancel or minus things that look too risky to take after code freeze.
    • [KaiRo] Right now, my main concern is if/how we can ship RC1 and then RC2/final after that. The only thing blocking RC1 right now is bug 452465 (directory-rel).
    • We don’t do release notes for RCs as due to their version settings, they point to the final relnotes. But we need to relnote any known crashes / performance issues. We can possibly “misuse” the final relnote doc for noting issues in RC1.
  • Schedule:
    • String freeze passed on Oct 1, locales starting to opt in.
    • Code freeze TODAY midnight PDT!
    • Spin first RC tomorrow if possible, with locales that are ready.
    • Let locales continue to opt in, RC2 should be final if in any way possible though.
      • Help can have exceptions to the string freeze – we always have handled it that way. And nothing breaks if localizers are not 100% in sync with help docs.
  • Branch planning is totally up in the air. Thunderbird drivers seem to think branching very closely to releasing their final is good. KaiRo thinks branching should happen before spinning our first RC. No compromise reached as of now.

Feature List, Planning

Bug statistics for last two (full) weeks: 52 new, 39 fixed, 30 triaged.

  • The rate of fixed bugs still continues to be high in the run up to 2.0.

Major wanted/needed features:

2.0

  • Toolbar customization aftermath [Ratty]
    • Good to go for 2.0. What remains has to be pushed back to 2.1 (bug 481862, Addressbook and HTML Composer toolbars).
  • bug 456757 Modern theme update [Ratty]
    • Good for 2.0 as is. The remaining polish bugs won’t block 2.0.
  • bug 348720 New icon set for “SeaMonkey Default Theme”
    • status/progress? Good for 2.0 as is?
    • A list of TODO icons is up in the bug
    • KaiRo landed task icons
  • bug 508039 “Know Your Rights” [mcsmurf]
    • Has r+ conditional on fix a few nits.
  • bug 442167 “New add-on installed” notification. patch landed [sgautherie]
  • bug 506724 bug 397236 bug 472873 Help updates (more in bug 423281)
    • status/progress?

We also should take a careful look at the other items on wanted-seamonkey2.0+

2.1

  • bug 460953 kill-rdf port [sgautherie]
    • Further work postponed to SM 2.1.
  • bug 436794 Enable Mac OS X system address book per default and add UI.
    • SM UI needed, unowned, helpwanted.
  • bug 410613 OpenSearch. helpwanted.
    • We need to check if OpenSearch can support all our existing functionality, for example the INTEPRETS section in Sherlock search plugins. Mnyromyr will check on that, and on how extensible the Firefox code is.
  • bug 449728 drag tabs between windows
    • unowned so far.
  • bug 498596 places bookmarks
    • unowned so far.
  • bug 477845 Build a standalone (Gecko 1.9.1) Composer
    • discussion needed.
  • bug 477840 Backport KompoZer to Composer
    • discussion needed.

wladow

Any other business?

  • People need to write some blog posts for the SeaMonkey blog to show off what SM2 features. Mnyromyr needs to write a summary on tabmail anyway, so he can make a blog post from that as well.
  • Interesting talks with multiple people in Prague about future and esp. KompoZer collaboration/integration.
  • KompoZer:
    • [KaiRo] Bascially after SeaMonkey 2.0 and KompoZer 0.8 (both expected this/next month), we should do a clone of comm-central+mozilla-central in a user space on hg.m.o and try to get things running there, then merge back either the repository or the patches.
    • We also should look into getting some build machines to do at least nightly build cycles.
    • Ideally, KaiRo can get machines into the SeaMonkey pool and we might be able to get the builds into the SeaMonkey buildmaster.
    • The main issue there is hardware/VMs, but KaiRo needs to talk to Mozilla IT about that topic in any case.
    • If KompoZer becomes an official Community Project, that might be simpler. Kaze is working on this at the moment.
  • bug 477845 [Build a standalone (Gecko 1.9.1) Composer].
    • We don’t need MOZ_STANDALONE_COMPOSER. If we would, we could do it with app-config.mk. For example --enable-application=editor.
  • The next step is for kaze to get a hg account and doing that comm-central clone to play around with.
  • [sgautherie] New mozilla-central build issues are: Windows needs Windows7 sdk/workaround; Linux leak test crashes.

  • Firefox 3.0.15: builds started
  • Firefox 3.5.4: need one more fix, then we’ll start builds
  • Should reopen branches on Thursday or so for 3.0.16 and 3.5.5

Firefox 3.6b1

  • code freeze was supposed to be last night, now moved to Tuesday Oct 6 at 11:59pm PDT
  • 31 P1 blockers showing as unresolved on 1.9.2
  • all feature landings needed before b1 cutoff are complete:
    • lightweight themes (done)
    • about:support (done)
    • js c types (done)
    • plugin update referrals (done)

Blocker Report

See more Firefox 3.6 related blocker queries, or learn about the new status and blocker flags

Browser / Front End

(Progress reports every weekend on Planet Firefox)

  • Firefox 3.6 b1 blockers:

GFX Update

  • 0 beta blockers; 4 1.9.2 blockers
  • Jeff landed a huge QCMS perf win from Steve Snyder in bug 512865. He’s got a blog post upcoming.
  • John got a big Mac Ts win from deferred font initialization in bug 517045.
  • Bas Schouten is coming on board, and has already got some great work done on OpenGL accelerated full-screen video. bug 510057
  • Lots of great news w.r.t. Windows 7 features – see Platform-specific features section below.

Layout Update

  • Blockers
    • 4 P1 blockers, all fixed on trunk (still analyzing regression from bug 509693, but can demote it to P2)
    • 24 P2 blockers, at least 3 with patches
    • low nomination rate
  • Landed animation of CSS properties with SMIL/SVG Animation (dholbert)
  • Landed doubly-linked frame lists (bzbarsky/mats)
  • WOFF landed for 3.6 (jfkthame/jdaggett)
  • Getting closer with Ogg decoder rewrite (doublec) — seeks, plays chained Oggs
  • Depending on how we perform on N900, may need new video/audio goals (or redeploy cpearce/kinetik)

Content Update

  • 1.9.2 beta1
  • Got the JetPack security changes landed (mrbkap)
  • Working on top-crashers

Platform-specific Support Update

  • Win7 sdk rollout complete. (hat tip bhearsum!)
  • Win7 taskbar preview patches (widget/browser) landed on trunk, 1.9.2 last night.
  • Win7 progress patches (widget/browser) have final reviews, still need to land.
  • Win7 jump list widget patch has final reviews, browser patch needs an sr.

JS

  • recursion landed for simple cases

Strange perf hit on a few mac (perf win on windows/linux) talos tests, investigating.

Startup Performance

Highlights from the weekly update post, and work started this week:

  • John Dagget’s ~20% cold startup improvement and ~4% warm startup improvement on Mac in bug 517045 landed on branch.
  • Taras Glek’s work on combining the different preference files has landed (bug 507288)
  • Alfred Kayser’s patch to increase throughput of JAR file reading has landed (bug 510844).
  • Ryan landed bug 475289 to lazily initialize the engineMetadataService for an expected 20ms win.
  • Ben Hsieh got some stat() removal landed in bug 510991. He’s got even more in bug 511761, just need bsmedberg review.
  • I’m no longer able to reproduce the Windows cold startup regression from 3.5 to 3.6 reported in bug 517741. I turned off SuperFetch, which resulted in more stable numbers, but there was no visible regression, even in builds going back a couple of months. Juan tested on Windows XP and found the same. The current numbers show a 27-30% *improvement* in cold startup time on trunk, and up to 8% on 3.6.

Join us on IRC in #startup.

Security

Nothing to report.

Electrolysis

  • Windowless plugins animating correctly (implement NPN_Invalidate*)
    • karlt beginning to design asynchronous painting
  • Remote canvas.drawWindow in final review. Yay!
    • Now we need to get event handling back up to speed
  • NPRuntime in final review
  • bent working on Windows deadlocks

Tree Management

  • We need a quiet time to land split-mochitests so we can iron out inter-test dependencies. Post-beta?
  • Win7 SDK is deployed!
  • Migrating 8 Tiger Talos machines to run Linux / Vista on Try Talos
  • Turning off idle builds. We currently run a full set of builds and tests if nothing on a branch has changed in several hours. This ties up resources required for other branches.
  • 1,774 landings last month, 37% jump over previous recorded highest
    • year to date range: 1,018 to 1,295
    • details here

Roundtable

Firebug

Four bugs outstanding right now for Firebug.

  • bug 520572 – funky window property js debugger bug
  • bug 500128 – long js files have incorrect line numbers
  • bug 520421 – need regression range
  • bug 515051 – Stream listener registered in a network request channel eats JS error messages
