  • Big thanks to Rahid Hasan and Shafiul Azam for their superb help on developer landscape research for the Bangladesh market.
  • Kudos to the whole French MDN community who finished the translation of our 139 pages about HTML last week-end! It is the first locale to achieve this. Special thanks to Jerémie who animated the MDN workshop and to Clarista who organized the Locasprint. Nothing would have been possible without them.
  • Lots of upvotes to John Giannelos, Tasos Katsoulas, and Pierros Papadeas for continuing to improve Mozilla Moderator. It’s gotten a lot of use recently with Town Hall meetings, and they have been hacking on it in their free time. The tool is a super way to organize topics for discussions that happen at scale. Thanks!
  • A GIGANTIC thank you to all the members of the localization community who have worked so hard this month localizing the Australis onboarding tours for new and existing users plus the new Firefox desktop product pages on mozilla.org for the Australis launch tomorrow. We really appreciate all your help creating a great user experience for Australis!!!!
  • A big THANK YOU to Michael Hung and the team at Mozilla Taipei for hosting a group of young Mandarin-speaking exchange students from the US, and for sharing Mozilla’s mission, products, and passion with them. Conference Room Survey QR’s Have Landed in SFO, MTV, LON! (Got feedback? give it to us!)

The conference room QR codes have been deployed to SFO, MTV, and LON. We should be finished by the end of this week. EUS wants to make sure your conference room experience is the best it can be, and giving us feedback is key.

MOC Update:

Last week, the MOC on average resolved 87 events per day, with an average time to resolve of less than 2 hours. Got MOC issues? let us help you. If you need to reach the current oncall MOC member, you can see who that is in #IT on IRC.

NetOps Update:

NetOps is presently testing wireless improvements on the 7th floor of SFO which address wireless roaming issues for OS X machines. Results have been positive so far, and we’ll keep you posted on our final observations.

  • Justin Potts (:justinpotts) for taking on the QA leadership role for the Webmaker project
  • Colin Frei, Alfredos (fredy) Damkalis, Andrew Truong (feer56), Andre Garzia, Gabriel Gómez, Viking KARWUR, Anuj Agarwal, Benlamara Abderahemane, Benny Chandra, Muhammad Mehmood Ali, Luigi Tedone, Steve Lee, Shahmir Khan, Sebastian Hengst, Jennie Rose Halperin, and Rami Khader have been managing the Tablet Contribution Program application review and awarding process with me (Asa Dotzler). They collectively developed the scoring/ranking criteria, reviewed over 1,200 applications, developed a communications plan including emails to awardees and those who didn’t make the cut, created much of the program documentation, and generally kicked ass preparing to empower 500 of our community to brave the tablet jungles ahead of the core Firefox OS teams.

Vidyo 3.0 Portal upgrade is now live!

The latest version of Vidyo Desktop (3.0.4) has been pushed to the Vidyo Portal (see [1] for new features). That means the next time you open the Vidyo Desktop client, you’ll be prompted to update to the latest version – please select “Update Now”. The download will start and you’ll see a confirmation message when it’s done installing. You will then need to enter your LDAP password to log into the new client to complete the setup process.

Please note all Vidyo calls are now managed through the Vidyo Desktop client (by clicking on the Vidyo icon on your desktop) and are no longer managed through the web portal (https://v.mozilla.com).

Thanks again to all who provided feedback over the past couple months to help test and provide feedback on version 3 of Vidyo Desktop.

Coming to a conference room near you will be QR codes that when scanned open a quick Google survey for feedback on your conference room experience. The QR codes are readable on any smartphone with a QR scanner installed. EUS wants to make sure your conference room experience is the best it can be, and giving us feedback is key.

VidyoDesktop 3 Goes Live!

Thanks to those who provided feedback on Vidyo 3, we’ve used it to fix a few things and now its ready for prime time. A mandatory and automatic update will be pushed on Monday morning, April 21st – for those that want to check out the client now, the download link is noted below [1]. Ample notice will be provided before v2 is no longer supported.

Some of the new features include:

  • Simplified UI w/ no Flash (means fewer crashes for you)!
  • Client auto sign-in w/ secure token (you no longer need to frequently type in your LDAP password to login)
  • Enhanced echo-cancellation for all OSs (especially for Macs!)
  • Ability to join any meeting by clicking a Vidyo room URL
  • Improved support and stability for Linux

MOC Update

  • The Mozilla Operations Center (MOC) is now staffed 24/7, and has begun the transition away from third-party incident handling.
  • The MOC has identified the top IT Services & Systems, and published an SLA framework for Incident handling.

These efforts are to ensure more consistent and timely IT incident handling and communication.

Employee badging stations are now in all Mozilla Spaces, and will enable individual and workweek badging at all locations.

WebEngineering is working on more improvements for Peekaboo.

Desk Phone improvements
Made perf. improvements to improve phone system management.

    • People can apply for any amount between $1,000 and $5,000.
    • Applications due by April 7th. Here’s an action idea: host a ‘quilting bee’ in schools, libraries, youth clubs, etc., where you teach people digital skills by showing them how to make their own part of the Web We Want interactive quilt using Mozilla’s Webmaker tools and curriculum.

  • Knight News Challenge — Submissions to the News Challenge close on March 18th, so now is the time to apply. As a reminder, the Challenge will award $2.75 million for breakthrough ideas around how to advance and protect the open web.   • Happy Birthday, World Wide Web — Last week, Mozilla celebrated the birthday of the Internet by launching the Web We Want interactive quilt. The quilt is built off of webmaker and enables people to remix and personalize with the type of Web they want, and we’re seeing some very interesting submissions. We will continue to use this quilt throughout the Maker Party campaign and will use it as a frame for other campaigns. Last week, we launched Mozilla BadgeKit, the new set of open, foundational tools to make the badging process easy. BadgeKit:

  • Supports key stages in the badging experience including creating, designing, assessing and issuing.
  • Includes remixable templates and milestone badges allowing for easy customization.
  • Provides modular and open options (standards) for the community of badge makers to use and build upon within their existing sites or systems.

Availability of BadgeKit:

  • Open now in private beta for select partner organizations that meet specific technical requirements.
  • Apply for access to the private beta hosted version.
  • Grab the code for each tool within Github.

Last Friday, we announced that Persona is transitioning to community ownership. You can read more on the Identity blog at http://identity.mozilla.com/post/78873831485/transitioning-persona-to-community-ownership

The most important points:

  • Mozilla is still supporting Persona. We’re just not funding new feature development.
  • Many of the original paid contributors are still working on Persona in their free time, alongside long-time community contributors.
  • Persona is Open Source! Join us in #identity and #persona and help us fix authentication on the web! 🙂

As for why the change is happening: Read the blog post! In short, we didn’t see as much adoption as we were hoping for by this point, nor did we see a clear path to adoption by other browsers / major email providers. Instead of piling on features, we’ve decided to keep Persona focused on what we know it does well: simple, email-based authentication.

  • Last week we joined with the Knight Foundation and the Ford Foundation to announce the News Challenge. The Knight News Challenge is an annual contest to find the best ideas to accelerate media innovation by funding breakthrough ideas in news and information.
  • This year’s Challenge fund totals $2.75 million to find innovative ideas that strengthen the Internet and keep it open, trustworthy and safe for free expression.
  • Participating in the challenge is open to ANYONE. We highly encourage the Mozilla Community to both participate (and encourage your networks to participate) and spread the word.

Firefox account based Sync progressing well through nightly/aurora. Over 15k accounts activated so far, roughly half actively doing syncing on a daily basis. > 30% have multiple devices. Even with 7500 accounts active, still seeing very few bug reports which “makes us nervous” — can still use help testing, especially for multi-device desktop/android flows. Thx to everyone that has filed bugs so far! QA/ops load tests yielding performance/stability improvements that put us on track for the expected big bump in usage when 29 goes to beta channel.

Firefox Account + Sync brownbag being scheduled for April, specific dates TBD.

Firefox Marketplace

Quick update on Marketplace (worlwide, all platforms) – supplied by David Bialer

  • Continues on a growth trajectory fueled by Firefox OS.
  • Over 1 million visits last month (Feb) from 470,000 unique visitors (Firefox OS, Android, Desktop)
  • 930,000 apps installed last month Feb)
  • 85% of visits are from non-english speakers (with Spanish, Portuguese #1 and #2 languages)
  • Since January 2013 there have been 6 million visits to Marketplace from over 3 million unique visitors.
  • The Marketplace and Firefox for Android teams are working to improve the app experience on Android this quarter in Fx29 and Fx30 to deliver a web app experience on Android on parity with native apps.

  • AUS is now Cache friendly! This helps reduce load on the web servers and storage array by almost 1 order of magnitude & in turn lowers the amount of infrastructure we need to host this service, and frees up both storage and compute resources for other tasks.
  • Product Delivery NFS mounts untangled in TCW, now using NetApp’s junction mounts to make 14 volumes appear as 1 mount point to the clients.
  • MacOS X 10.9.2 and OS X Security Updates for 10.7 Lion/10.8 Mountain Lion – Do It Now!Apple released the 10.9.2 update, as well as Security Updates for 10.7 Lion and 10.8 Mountain Lion. This addresses the SSL bug on 10.9, as well as a number of patches related to keeping things locked down. If you haven’t upgraded, don’t wait – do it today! This update will require a restart.
