Items in this section will be shared during the live all-hand status meeting.

Friends of Mozilla

  • Again, big thanks to Kohei Yoshino to all his amazing pull requests, triaging, and contributions to Web Productions and specifically the Australis launch on mozilla.org! Without Kohei, it would have been difficult to deliver all of the changes and new content for last Tuesday’s Fx 29 launch. <8
  • Big thanks to the outgoing Featured Add-ons Board–Michael Balazs, Si Howard, Rejah Rehim, Swarnava Sengupta, Muhammad Mehmood Ali, and Jithin Joji Anchanattu! They were responsible for selecting all the featured add-ons on AMO for the past six months. Deadline to apply for the next board is tomorrow! More info: https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2014/04/30/apply-featured-board/

Our conferences create a time and a place for the global community of documentarians to share information, discuss ideas, and work together to improve the art and science of documentation. ”

Silent Update:

Grow Mozilla

Speaker Location: San Francisco

One of Mozilla’s goals this year is to increase the size of the community by 10 times.

What will these 20,000 active contributors be doing? That is something that the Community Building team has been spending the last few months looking into.

We’ve come up with a list of areas that have both high growth potential and align with our strategic goals.

  • Coding
  • Documentation
  • Engagement
  • Localization
  • Location Services
  • Privacy/Policy
  • QA
  • Support
  • User Research
  • Web Compatibility

To see all of the teams we’re supporting with their community building efforts, check out this dashboard.

Are there high growth potential opportunities that we’re missing? Are you looking for help bringing contributors in to your project? Send an email to community-building@mozilla.org.

IT

  • Thanks to everyone who took the time to scan and fill out our conference room survey
  • Here are some of the top issues from last week: WiFi Connectivity, improved input methods in some conference rooms (instead of the IR remotes)
  • The good news: These line up with what IT feels are the top issues as well!
  • We are actively working on these issues and will provide updates as they get resolved
  • Don’t be shy: Keep the feedback coming! Scan and go!

All-hands Status Meeting Agenda

Items in this section will be shared during the live all-hand status meeting.

Friends of Mozilla

  • Big thanks to add-on reviewer Teo, who rolled up his sleeves and reviewed 64 add-ons last week! The add-on review queue currently has a wait time of 3 weeks, so if you have an add-on in the queue and would like to help it move along, please apply to be an add-on reviewer! https://wiki.mozilla.org/Marketplace/Reviewers/Addons
  • Big thanks to Rahid Hasan and Shafiul Azam for their superb help on developer landscape research for the Bangladesh market.
  • Kudos to the whole French MDN community who finished the translation of our 139 pages about HTML last week-end! It is the first locale to achieve this. Special thanks to Jerémie who animated the MDN workshop and to Clarista who organized the Locasprint. Nothing would have been possible without them.
  • Lots of upvotes to John Giannelos, Tasos Katsoulas, and Pierros Papadeas for continuing to improve Mozilla Moderator. It’s gotten a lot of use recently with Town Hall meetings, and they have been hacking on it in their free time. The tool is a super way to organize topics for discussions that happen at scale. Thanks!
  • A GIGANTIC thank you to all the members of the localization community who have worked so hard this month localizing the Australis onboarding tours for new and existing users plus the new Firefox desktop product pages on mozilla.org for the Australis launch tomorrow. We really appreciate all your help creating a great user experience for Australis!!!!
  • A big THANK YOU to Michael Hung and the team at Mozilla Taipei for hosting a group of young Mandarin-speaking exchange students from the US, and for sharing Mozilla’s mission, products, and passion with them. Check out the short video they created here: https://myfirefox.com.tw/videos/22159. If you will be in Northern California on Friday May 9th, and would be interested in sharing your knowledge about Mozilla with a team of ten year olds from Taipei, please email Pete Scanlon [pscanlon@mozilla.com] with the subject line “Taipei student visit”
  • A huge thank you to the entire working group (60+), with a special shout out to the core group of about 12, who helped create our new, Global Wellness Initiative which will be announced today.
  • Props and more props to the 21 volunteer and staff Mozillians whose hard work, passion, collaboration, and flexbility made last week’s MozCamp design session such a success!

Received this from one of our community members:

  • #WeAreMozilla
  • “I’m just recovering from nearly a month of debilitating illness, so I’m not really able to lead much of anything. However, I’m wondering if what’s needed now is an opportunity for people to affirm what they love about Mozilla, and what they *do* with and for Mozilla. People have spent the last few weeks trying to figure out how to be individuals. I would love to participate in participatory media-making that gives us a chance to be a community again. Thoughts? The idea would be to ask people to share one thing they have experienced/done/worked on with Mozilla, and then also to list two things from others that they also find inspiring.”
  • Interested? Got ideas? Get in touch with @OpenMatt and I’ll connect you. https://twitter.com/OpenMatt

Non-verbal updates:

  • Help us test Webmaker Training!
    • Official training kicks off in May, but we’d love feedback on the ‘Building’ module, which is all about using Webmaker tools to create learning resources and teaching kits.

Chris Heilmann: I put together a blog post outlining how to communicate to the outside world without becoming a target for misquotes or attacks. Please have a read. I am also happy to help anyone who wants to say something but feels intimidated or unhappy to do it publicly. This is a time to stand strong and together and not give people wrong quotes. It is not a time to be silent when you are unhappy. Have a read, it has a cute baby bat.

Open Badges

Speaker Location: nonverbal

Last week, we launched Mozilla BadgeKit, the new set of open, foundational tools to make the badging process easy. BadgeKit:

  • Supports key stages in the badging experience including creating, designing, assessing and issuing.
  • Includes remixable templates and milestone badges allowing for easy customization.
  • Provides modular and open options (standards) for the community of badge makers to use and build upon within their existing sites or systems.

Availability of BadgeKit:

  • Open now in private beta for select partner organizations that meet specific technical requirements.
  • Apply for access to the private beta hosted version.
  • Grab the code for each tool within Github.

Identity

Speaker Location: Vidyo

Last Friday, we announced that Persona is transitioning to community ownership. You can read more on the Identity blog at http://identity.mozilla.com/post/78873831485/transitioning-persona-to-community-ownership

The most important points:

  • Mozilla is still supporting Persona. We’re just not funding new feature development.
  • Many of the original paid contributors are still working on Persona in their free time, alongside long-time community contributors.
  • Persona is Open Source! Join us in #identity and #persona and help us fix authentication on the web! 🙂

As for why the change is happening: Read the blog post! In short, we didn’t see as much adoption as we were hoping for by this point, nor did we see a clear path to adoption by other browsers / major email providers. Instead of piling on features, we’ve decided to keep Persona focused on what we know it does well: simple, email-based authentication.

Firefox account based Sync progressing well through nightly/aurora. Over 15k accounts activated so far, roughly half actively doing syncing on a daily basis. > 30% have multiple devices. Even with 7500 accounts active, still seeing very few bug reports which “makes us nervous” — can still use help testing, especially for multi-device desktop/android flows. Thx to everyone that has filed bugs so far! QA/ops load tests yielding performance/stability improvements that put us on track for the expected big bump in usage when 29 goes to beta channel.
