NewCo Tech Festival at Mozilla Mountain View

  • On Wednesday, June 10 Mozilla has been invited to host some activities as part of NewCo, a festival for innovation where people in specific regions sign up to visit innovative companies making positive social change. We hosted this in NY earlier this month and all local staff are invited to attend:
    • 2pm in the MV Commons. Our VP Platform Engineering David Bryant will share on the Mozilla mission and its relevance for the technology community.
    • 6pm – 8pm also in the MV Commons. The after-festival party will happen – come mix with hundreds of other professionals in tech right in our own office.
  • In addition, NewCo has provided Mozilla with 20 complimentary Gold level passes which enable you to check out some of the other companies in the festival; these are first-come first-serve so if you are interested, sign up now:

  • Introducing the May Brantina (Breakfast + Cantina, 9am PST / 4pm UTC / 6pm CEST), a format we’re testing to join time zones over breakfast, lunch or happy hour and learn from guest speakers. This month Kate Heddleston, a software engineer in the Bay Area, will share how insufficient onboarding leads to ‘team debt,’ an analogy she makes to technical debt, where poor system design slows down the system. Kate will also provide some guidance on some fairly immediate things individual teams can do to reduce the debt.

  • Mozilla Balkans Community Meetup, Bucharest, Romania. 23rd-24th.
    • The Balkans Inter-Community meet-up 2015 will take place in Bucharest, Romania, on May 22-24th. Lead contributors from Balkan communities will be invited to participate in a 2-day event with sessions and workshops. The aim of the meetup is to enable Mozilla communities in the Balkans to share and learn from each other’s experience working on the Mozilla Project, improve collaboration in the future, and work on specific tasks.

MySQL Operations Changes

We are currently handing off MySQL operations except for Bugzilla and Reviewboard to a 3rd party contractor to free up the Data Team for bigger projects. If you have access to MySQL, that will not change. However, the people who debug problems will change. If you have any concerns or questions, please e-mail data@mozilla.com or contact the data team manager, Sheeri Cabral.

A/V Room Refresh

As part of our overall 2015 A/V Refresh Initiative, AVOps is updating our video conference room systems in SFO & PDX to meet our current standards for improved reliability, overall user experience and perform a technology refresh with equipment that is past its useful life. Check the wiki for a full list of rooms that will get new digs!

IT Vending Machine Update

The Mozilla IT peripheral vending machine has arrived in the MTV office. If you work in MTV ( or just visiting) and need a power cord, mouse, headset, etc. you can find the vending machine by the Service Desk. The machine is integrated with our badging system so all you have to do is swipe your badge and choose your item.

If you only need an item a short time please return it to the Service Desk so we can redeploy. Also, if you don’t find what you need in the vending machine please ask on of our Service Desk team.

IT Peripheral Vending machines are coming to the SF and Toronto offices in Q2.

Notable changes to bugzilla.mozilla.org during the last week:

  • bug 579089 The default Hardware and Operating-System fields now default to “Unspecified/Unspecified” instead of the reporter’s platform
    • This can be overwritten per-product, file a bug if you own a product and want this changed
  • bug 1151830 GitHub Auth is now enabled, allowing non-powerful accounts to sign in using their github credentials.

    • An afternoon of high-level dev talks focused around problem solving and innovative solutions. You’ll hear from over 15 dev experts talking about real world scenarios and the tools they’re using
  • Brand Town Hall – Part Two, 9-10am PST
    • The Brand team will an update on strategies we’re working on that help make Mozilla more understandable and accessible to the general public.

    • This will ride the trains to Aurora 40, but not to release builds yet.
    • FirefoxOS cannot be enabled until bug 1125961 is complete.
