Schedule

  • Beta
    • Fx14 Beta 6 went live in the Market on 2012-06-08
    • Fx14 Beta 7 build was tagged/built on 2012-06-12 and planned to be in Market on 2012-06-13 (fast tracked for longer field test)

Major Topics for This Week

Fx14 Endgame

With Beta 7 looking to be our last “full week” beta, we tried to be mostly code frozen yesterday (Jun12) even though the official code freeze date is Friday (Jun15). We have 3 release blockers

Fx16 and Fx15 Uplifts

Product, Release, UX and Dev are working on the desired Fx15 feature set using the Roadmap as a base. Some features will be higher priority than others. Lower priority features with higher risks might not make the cut for uplift to Aurora (Fx15). The safest thing to do is ask for approval if you are working on a Roadmap feature and the drivers will handle making the decision.

Friends of Mobile

Shout out to xmixahlx for keeping the Firefox on Android ARMv6 builds going. Read more about the ongoing work and feedback from users here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1643785 (14 pages)

Beta branch mechanics

Beta 7 will be the first release off our 14.0 release branch, which means that default mozilla-beta will be open to 14.1 landings (things marked blocking-fennec:.N+). Once 14.0 is released to our release channel in the market, the beta channel will start shipping 14.1 builds from the default mozilla-beta branch. This also means that as of now, anything landing for 14.0 will need to double land on the mozilla-beta default branch and the mozilla-beta MOBILE140_2012061216_RELBRANCH branch

Stand ups

Suggested format:

SUMO

(Just read the wiki today please)
We had a restart of the meetup last week and put together some great ideas for a release party in July–we should have a celebration in every MozSpace next month 🙂

Beta is a 4-star product in Google Play, with Beta6 getting 43 five-star written reviews.

Themes:
“Chrome beta what? I’m a huge firefox fan but this used to suck but now it’s faster than chrome on my gfs gnex. Good work mozilla”

“Onex On x One works fine, actually better than the Chrome beta”

“Ausumm Ausum made my work so much easier”

“Anything to do with computers gets me hot but this is a whole new level of computer pleasure”

“Superb I’m very satisfied. downloading is very stable even in low connection.”

“Excellent If you use Firefox on your PC this is the browser for you. I love the way it Syncs tabs and book marks with my pc. I like the navigation and appearance too.”

Low reviews themes: text selection & copy/paste; google search looks old

A couple of questions on SUMO about blocked tablets (we improved documentation to fix):
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions?tagged=mobile

We also updated documentation to address the prerequisite uninstallation of sync’ed aurora/beta/nightly before syncing the final release version.

User requests: import bookmarks from another mobile browser

Next week: need to finalize supported devices list, how to change change language article, and make final clarifications in the tablet getting started article.

Market Insights

Desktop / Platform

Adobe

Android

Apple

  • At Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference this week, Apple presented some of the recent changes to the Safari web browser, some of which had already been seen in OS X Mountain Lion preview builds. The updated browser will feature a unified search and address bar, synced tabs via iCloud, a new “Tab View” interface, Baidu as the standard search engine in China and “the fastest Javascript interpreter on the market”

Facebook / Social Networks

  • Facebook launched App Center, a personalized dashboard that “aims to improve app discovery across the web and mobile devices”. More than 600 social apps were included. At the launch, Facebook said that they had more than 130 games with one million users or more, and that they drove people to the Apple App Store 83 million times last month.
  • Interestingly, in the App Center, only randomly-sampled users will be able to provide app ratings, in an effort to reduce the impact of manipulation.
  • Samsung indicated that they were planning to launch a Facebook competitor

Google

  • The Chrome team, in their dev channel, released the first build of Chrome for Windows 8. Here are some screenshots
  • Google’s Chrome Web Store is now available in Turkey, Ukraine, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates. There have also been some improvements in the analytics available to developers.
  • Also in the Chrome Web Store is an improved PageSpeed Insights tool, an extension that analyzes all aspects of the page load, including resources, network, DOM, and the timeline.
  • Perhaps because of the increasing availability of “retina” displays, Chrome Canary builds now support the CSS image-resolution property.
  • Chrome 20 will now feature a timer with microsecond precision, allowing much more accurate timing for profiling.

Microsoft

  • Microsoft stated that the upcoming release of MSIE10 will support unprefixed versions of CSS gradients, animations, transitions, transforms, font-feature-settings, the indexed database API and requestAnimationFrame. A number of other properties will also be supported in prefixed form.
  • “Pinned sites” in Windows 8 can now sport a 144×144 pixel tile image and custom colours if the site author includes some custom meta tags in their HTML.

Opera

  • The Opera team produced a long list of all the properties in the upcoming version 12 release of Opera that will support animation.

Security

  • The Chrome team also released a breakdown of a second security breach that was revealed by Google’s Pwnium contest earlier this year. This one made use of some XSS vulnerabilities in Chrome’s URL handling.
  • Yesterday was Patch Tuesday and Microsoft released fixes for 26 vulnerabilities, including one zero-day Internet Explorer bug that affects all versions, even MSIE10.

Action Items

(who needs to do what that hasn’t been recorded in a bug) We should assign people to the open items.

NEW

OPEN

  • IanN to arrange with Jeff to send a tee-shirt or something to Serge (FotFT).
    • Still haven’t managed to get hold of Serge yet.

CLOSED

Status of the SeaMonkey Buildbot Master and Tree

  • All our machines are now all out of SJC1 are are now at SCL3 or SCL1 (bug 721516).
    • Setting up SM VMs finished (bug 740613)
    • Set up the HPs (bug 744298) wrong bug?
    • The R4 Macs are plugged-in, connected and base-imaged. Waiting on Callek to complete the setup.
    • cb-seamonkey-linux-01 is back in action, so we’re now at 3 Linux build slaves.
  • ewong and Callek are working on building on MSVC2010.
    • bug 755626 tracks the progress of changing sea-win32-02 to using MSVC2010.
  • L10n Update: (2012-05-20): l10n buildbots are building again on all three platforms for be, de, en-GB, es-AR, gl, hu, it, lt, nl, ru, sk, uk, zh-CN and zh-TW. Still nothing since end of April for cs, es-ES, fr, nb-NO, pl, pt-PT and sv-SE.

Release Train

  • 2.10b3 shipped June 1
  • 2.10 shipped June 6
    • Move Bookmarks is broken (bug 762824), fix committed to all branches (including release)
  • 2.11b1 shipped June 8
    • Also affected by (bug 762824), will be fixed in 2.11b2
  • 2.10.1 release: This is likely to be sometime in the next 5 days, but depends on when Firefox / TB do their 13.0.1 point releases.
  • 2.11b2 release: Tentatively Thursday 14th June.
  • It’s been a busy couple of weeks on the train! So well done to the build team!

Extensions Compatibility Tracking

  • See Basics page. Please only list current changes here.
  • Addon Compatibility Listings
    • No Lightning beta matching 2.11b1 yet due to L10n issues. Tthis has been noted in the 2.11b1 release notes.
    • Compatible Lighting test builds available from the Calendar Versions Page.
  • Our build team (Serge, Callek, ewong) needs to automate DOMI branch selection rather than having to tweak the client.py every 6 weeks. bug 763506

2.x (Last, Current, Next)

  • 2.9 had ~87,000 ADU by last Tuesday and 2.9.1 had ~134,100 downloads so far.
    • Of the released versions, as of last Tuesday, we have 13.0% on 2.0, 5.0% on 2.1-2.3, 8.5% on 2.4-2.6, 3.6% on 2.7, 7.3% on 2.8 and 62.6% on 2.9. So, in the last two weeks, ~2k (an additional 1.7% of ADU) have migrated to 2.7 or above.
    • Some people cannot upgrade due to system requirements (OS version, processor capabilities etc.). This even more applies to 2.10 which dropped support for Win2k and WinXP without SP2.
    • The current plan is to create a new page for latest builds available for “Legacy Platforms” e.g. PPC containing links to 2.6.1 PowerPC/G4 and also perhaps to TenFourFox and TenFourBird. We can then link to that from our main release page. See bug 759315.
  • See Basics page for the usual reminders.

2.10

open tracking (0)
tracking requests (8)
targeted (3)
fixed (16)

  • One tracked 2.5 issue still open.
    • 2.1 through 2.7 have NOT included the ka (Kartvelian aka Georgian) locale. The last release with ka locale shipped was 2.0.14 and the ka l10n maintainers have not yet updated for changes in later SeaMonkey versions.
    • Callek now needs to morph bug 667147 into removing |ka| from our [current] automation entirely (all-locales). Callek will look at best locale to transition any ka users to.
      • Plan is to migrate ka users to en-US with a english dialog saying they are out of date, and a link to the all-locales page if there is a language they understand better. Current ADU of ka alone is 3-5 individuals, so low impact.~Callek
      • Callek and ewong were working on this but they didn’t manage to get this done by the time 2.9 shipped. No new ETA unfortunately.

2.Next

  • Asynchronous load-on-demand livemarks (bug 730837) missed 2.10 but landed on all branches. Is fixed in 2.11b1.
    • Inclusion into 2.10.1 depends on the risk and further testing.
    • InvisibleSmiley proposes a 2.10.1RC with the async live marks fix so that we can get some test coverage. Also he plans to create a local build with the fix (comm-release tip) and see how that goes.

Feature List, Planning

Business as usual.

Any other business?

  • Geolocation
    • Geolocation now works out of the box. MoCo turned it on by default for all applications that build off mozilla-central.
    • For comm-beta all we need to do is (bug 494421) to add pref("geo.wifi.uri", "https://www.google.com/loc/json"); to browser-prefs.js. However we’re not even sure we are legally allowed to ship with the URL in, we might need to actually put in a pref to disable that in newer builds.
    • No news to date. Callek will have to reach out to his MoCo legal contact again soonish.
  • Test failures
    • qawanted, especially on Linux and MacOSX specific issues: reproducing and reporting would already help.
    • Serge says that on Linux and MacOSX, he just needs someone to actually run the tests and report what they see (screen, console, etc). For example, there is a Mac test about Ctrl+W not working. This should be so trivial.
    • tonymec suggests that any enthusiastic user, even non-technical, should be able to do some testing (litmus?) and not be scared by technical language and such.
    • IanN suggests reaching out to the user community using the newsgroups and forums.
    • Serge to do a write up and send it to Ratty to propagate to the community.
      • Ratty is ***still*** waiting for Serge.
  • Top Secret stuff regarding world domination:
    • Mnyromyr: ▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓.
    • Mcsmurf: ▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓.

All-hands Status Meeting Agenda

Items in this section will be shared during the live all-hand status meeting.

Friends of the Tree

  • The Contributor Engagement team nominates Mozilla Rep Chit Thiri Maung, @akheno, for leading the launch of the Mozilla Myanmar community website. Kudos also went out from Mitchell.
  • Contributor Engagement would also like to acknowledge Irayani Queencyputri (a.k.a Rara) who has been selected by the Mozilla Reps Council as the Rep of the month for June 2012. A dentist by day, and a blogger by night (http://i-rara.com), Rara has been contributing to the Mozilla project for several years, joining the Mozilla Indonesia from her base in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Recently, she managed Mozilla’s at the National Computer expo in Makassar. And as this was being typed, Rara was about to embark on a grueling (but exciting!) 6 city tour for Mozilla as part of the Festival Komputer Indonesia 2012.

Feedback Summary

Desktop

  • Firefox 13: Generally OK feedback so far, comments mainly around new features. Most of the negative comments could be addressed through user education.

Issues

We are seeing a 3% decrease in issues for 13 compared to the first two days of Firefox 12. Currently we are seeing reports of the following:

  • SPDY cannot connect to Gmail on XP SP3 issue [1] UPDATE: Ticket filed [2]
  • Avast claims FF 13 update is suspicious [3]
  • Possibly something with hotmail/messenger (Can’t change status, can’t log in, can’t read messages — lots of pt-BR messages)
  • Slower than previous versions [4]
  • Memory consumption [5]

New tab page (probably about 60% negative): [6]:

  • Want home page [7] [8] [9]
  • Want google [10]
  • Don’t know how to disable [11]
  • Don’t know how to manage links [12]
  • Think it is a privacy issue [13] – about 40-50% of negative feedback about this feature.

Tabs on demand:

  • Don’t know how to disable [14]

Home page (about 80% negative):

  • Almost universally hated because some people (a number of people) seem to have lost their previous home pages. Also, can’t set “blank” as a home page.
  • Reset the home page [15]
  • Unable to change homepage [16]
  • Don’t like the new buttons [17]
  • Users can’t change the search engine on this page.
  • Some users are ending up with Yahoo as a home page without their consent.

Praise

New Tab Page [18]:

  • Dear Firefox, I absolutely adore the history thumbnails that appear now whenever I open a new browser or a new tab. Thanks!!
  • I really love the new tab feature added with your latest update!
  • The new tab page makes it much easier to get to your favorite websites.

Homepage [19]:

  • Awesome mozilla firefox 13 with new features off home page.A lot of improvements.Good job by your team.
  • Buttons on the bottom of the homepage- handy

Smooth scrolling [20]:

  • Smooth scrolling !!! FINALLY !
  • Nice and smoth scroll option.. sss ..
  • Smooth scrolling looks very good and faster. thanks!

Mobile

Firefox Beta for Android fixed the top three user issues with the product (start-up performance, browsing performance and flash support).

Overall for beta4/5 feedback is good; 4 stars.

Beta4/5 user issues:

  • Photon 4g continues to generate low reviews
  • A couple of instability reports and a couple of website incompatibility reports (techcrunch)

Beta 4/5 requests:

  • Text selection
  • Fewer permissions

Documentation:

  • Completing documentation of single sync client requirement for beta/aurora/nightly users before installing release
  • Updating supported devices documentation
  • Need to update language support documentation
  • Need to clarify tablet support and compatibility

UX & User Research

UX Design

  • UX summit last week, so we were quiet
  • [hometab/newtab] new mockups getting finished for some lightweight prototyping (Boriss)
  • [android] (ibarlow)
    • final bug work for Native UI release (so soon!)
    • tablet and next-version-of-phone implementation and design support going on in
    • Oh look! First traces of search suggest designs landing screenshot in flickr
  • [sync setup] 90% use case flow revisions (Zhenshuo)
  • [Identity] Ongoing design of Sign-into-site flows – variant 1, variant 2 (Zhenshuo)
  • [apps integration] Design of app recommendations ongoing (Boriss, with special guest Bryan)
  • [desktop]
    • Reviewing Australis designs against new Firefox heatmap data (Zhenshuo)
    • Detailed interaction design iterations happening on Australis customization UI; basic clickable mockup (Zhenshuo, Stephen)
    • Design in progress for layout of in-content preferences: mockup (Zhenshuo)
  • [metro] (Yuan)
    • User feedback on button styling for metro app bar — user test materials
    • Another video sketch, this one about general web browsing use, in preparation
    • Exploring share functions, through app contract

Research

UR ran some usability tests on the Firefox Beta. We found that basic tasks (search, bookmarking, tabs) were easy for participants to complete. There are some questions around the search accelerators in the Top Sites tab, and of course typing is still painful. UR will work with UX to figure out how to manage. Anyone who wants to see raw video footage of the tests can contact Mary Trombley.

Market Insights

Desktop / Platform

Apple

  • Apple was granted 22 patents covering everything from industrial design to a futuristic 3D Apple TV remote and even a way that Apple envisions of harnessing power through electromagnetic induction to help extend battery life on iOS devices.

Microsoft

  • The 6th Platform Preview for IE10 now includes the latest preview update for IE10. It includes an embedded Adobe Flash Player, which has been improved to support touch gestures. It is also integrated with the Process Lifetime Manager to better improve battery life in the Metro environment. Flash will also be bundled with the operating system and will receive improvements through Windows Update.
  • The new release preview also sends a Do Not Track header by default, the first web browser to do so.
  • IE10 now supports unprefixed versions of CSS transitions, transforms, animations, gradients, and CSS Fonts’ font-feature-settings property, as well as platform APIs such as the Indexed Database API (IndexedDB) and requestAnimationFrame().
  • IE10 will also no longer support IE4’s visual filters and transitions for anything other than intranet sites
  • Interesting, Microsoft is going to great lengths to force adoption of the Metro-style interface, even to the point of removing all code from Windows 8 referencing the Start button/menu to prevent third-party developers from creating a workaround allowing people to continue using it
  • Microsoft’s Bing Mobile team released On-Ex, an Android application that is a sort of “if this then that” for mobile phones. Powered by Javascript, it offers some interesting API calls — modeOfTransport returns whether the user is walking, running or driving.
  • Analysts are estimating that new Windows RT tablets will be in the $500-$700 price range, which raises concerns for their viability

Google

Security

Tizen

  • A Tizen developer ran the RingMark test on Tizen, Android, and iPhone smartphones. Tizen was the clear leader with 141 passed Ring 1 tests.

Gaming

Mobile

Summary below, full update here and in your inbox.

  • Opera announced it reached 189.6 million mobile users, a new version of Opera Mini for basic phones and a partnership with America Movil and one with Bharti Airtel
  • 65% of all Androids run Gingerbread, 19% Froyo and 7% Ice Cream Sandwich
  • The hardware section of the Play Store expansing with accessories
  • Researchers found security flaws in Google Bouncer
  • HTC and Sony partnered to augment their mobile offerings
  • First Android device on x86 architecture available in Europe
  • Samsung Galaxy S III landing in market, Galaxy Note 2 rumoured to launch in October
  • Asus, Acer and Toshiba to be among Windows 8 tablet manufacturers
