Schedule

  • Next merge is 2012-10-08

Major Topics for This Week

ARMv6

Based on data and feedback, we are not opening Fx16 final release up to ARMv6 devices. We will keep gathering data on the Beta channel (Fx17).

B2G Prioritization

In order to ensure b2g hits it’s “basecamp” timeline, the Mozilla Engineering org is temporarily moving some developers from other projects to work on the remaining b2g and gaia blockers. From Mobile, Margaret Leibovic and Chris Peterson are moving to work on b2g. The overall change has affected our Q4 goals, but Product and Project management have been working to clarify the roadmap and goals.

SeaMonkey: 2012-10-02

Filed under: Posts — Tags: — Jesper Kristensen @ 11:00 pm

Agenda

  • Who’s taking minutes? -> Ratty
  • Nominees for Friends of the Fish Tank (all for Equinox Bug Triaging):
    • Px
    • lenochod
    • Tonymec

Action Items

(who needs to do what that hasn’t been recorded in a bug) We should assign people to the open items.

NEW

  • TBD

OPEN

  • IanN to arrange with Jeff to send a tee-shirt or something to Serge (FotFT).
    • Serge will look at the SeaMonkey Shop and let IanN know what he wants before the next meeting.

CLOSED

  • TBD

Status of the SeaMonkey Buildbot Master and Tree

  • All our machines are now all out of SJC1 are are now at SCL3 or SCL1
    • The R4 Macs are plugged-in, connected and base-imaged. Waiting on Callek to complete the setup (also see below in the clang section, sea-mini-osx64-1..4).
    • The remaining machines on Parallels are the buildmaster (cb-seamonkey-linuxmaster-01) and Linux64 (cb-seamonkey-linux64-01). These need to be migrated to ESX. Specifically:
      • sea-vm-linux64-1 will most likely replace cb-seamonkey-linux64-01.
      • sea-master1 will replace the current buildmaster.
    • bug 740633 set up seamonkey HPs in scl3. Hardware installed and iLO configured. CentOS 6.3 installed. sea-puppet is online. Callek to set the host up as a puppet master.
  • Linux builds have been failing because the GTK version installed on the tinderboxen was too told. See bug 795354 on updating the GTK version on the tinderboxen. bug 794285 has lowered the GTK version requirement back to 2.10 for now (also see bug 793634 on this, in the future GTK 2.18 and glib 2.22 will be required).
  • Windows builds have been failing because of an out-of-date version of NSIS. bug 794351 took care of updating the Windows tinderboxen to a current NSIS version.
  • Build SeaMonkey using clang bug 775539. In progress.
    • bug 776426 Set up ccache on all MacOSX systems. CCACHE is installed on the MacOSX systems. Buildbot config changes to enable ccache usage have been checked in.
    • bug 791442 Mac trunk build with clang and XCode 4.1 failing. Callek is investigating. Current solution will be to install Mac OS X 10.7 (already done) and all required software on sea-mini-osx64-1..4. There is no solution yet for the machines cb-sea-miniosx64-01..3.

Release Train

  • 2.13b4 shipped September 23
  • 2.13b5 shipped September 28

Extensions Compatibility Tracking

  • See Basics page. Please only list current changes here.
  • Addon Compatibility Listings
    • Nothing to highlight.
  • We’ve had reports of some extensions shipped by default (among them CZ) not being compatible with SM 2.12. InvisibleSmiley guesses we missed to version bump them so people with compatible-by-default pref’ed off run into issues now.
    • IanN to check with Callek/ewong to see if they have updated the release notes to account for version bumping on the extensions we ship as standard.
    • mcsmurf talked to KaiRo about the language pack, but did not come to a conclusion, only that it was “complicated”.
  • Our build team (Serge, Callek, ewong) needs to automate DOMI branch selection rather than having to tweak the client.py every 6 weeks. bug 763506
    • sgautherie thinks that the current DOMi branches/tags are not suitable for automatic SeaMonkey branch selection.
    • Need some traction on this. IanN spoke to Serge at MozCampEU. Serge is waiting for Callek/ewong to agree what needs to happen and to say what is workable or not.

2.x (Last, Current, Next)

  • 2.12 had ~132,900 ADU by last Tuesday and 2.12.1 ~103,600 downloads so far.
    • Of the released versions, as of last Tuesday, we have 11.1% on 2.0, 3.2% on 2.1-2.3, 4.2% on 2.4-2.6, 7.1% on 2.7-2.9, 2.9% on 2.10, 9.8% on 2.11 and 61.7% on 2.12. So, in the last two weeks, ~0.6k (an additional 0.5% of ADU) have migrated to 2.7 or above.
    • ADUs continue increasing after the summer dip (up to ~133k) but still not back up to June levels yet (~144k).
    • Some people cannot upgrade due to system requirements (OS version, processor capabilities etc.). This even more applies to 2.10 which dropped support for Win2k and WinXP without SP2.
    • We now have a webpage for latest builds available for “Legacy Platforms” like PPC (bug 759315) but hikerbiker suggests making the Legacy/PPC link more discoverable (Mozillazine post). IanN agrees that the current link is not easily found. InvisibleSmiley said that he didn’t want it to be too obvious or highlighted. IanN thinks splitting and renaming Old to Previous isn’t a bad idea and moving Unofficial Releases after it. Perhaps merging Contributed builds into it.
      • This is now bug 788543 SeaMonkey – PPC Legacy links are not easy to find.
      • IanN to check with InvisibleSmiley what he wants to do about this.
  • See Basics page for the usual reminders.

Good First Bugs

  • Note: The GFB list is open to all including our regular contributors.
  • Ratty is working on an updated GFB list, suggestions welcome.
  • Currently there are 30 GFBs open, 5 are being actively worked on.
  • List of Open mentored bugs.
    • Ratty notes that there are 24 bugs that are GFBs but without the mentor keyword. These need to be audited to see if they are really suitable as GFBs.
  • In the last two weeks since the previous meeting:
    • Ewong is working on bug 791238 and has fixed bug 715410.
    • Tonymec is working on bug 789865.
    • Newcomers are working on bug 752331 (Amod) and on bug 791266 (idlike2dream).
    • Newccomers Andres Hernandez and Liu have expressed interest in working on some of our GFBs.
    • bug 735333 (Use Services.prefs instead of preferences-service / gPrefService, in SeaMonkey code). Work on this was stalled but Archaeopteryx has picked this up.
    • Work on bug 768025 appears to have stalled.
  • Mentors of stalled bugs should try to communicate with the assignees and if they can’t work on them any more to unassign/free up those bugs.

bug 794777 Upgrade license to MPL 2 for /suite/installer/license.txt.
  • QA: business as usual.
  • Fall Equinox Bug Event:

Any other business?

  • Bug Day:
    • Useful link: [1], also see [2] for results.
    • please insert results and impressions here
  • Geolocation
    • Geolocation now works out of the box. MoCo turned it on by default for all applications that build off mozilla-central.
    • For comm-beta all we need to do is (bug 494421) to add pref("geo.wifi.uri", "https://www.google.com/loc/json"); to browser-prefs.js. However we’re not even sure we are legally allowed to ship with the URL in, we might need to actually put in a pref to disable that in newer builds.
    • No news to date. Callek will have to reach out to his MoCo legal contact again soonish.
  • Test failures
    • qawanted, especially on Linux and MacOSX specific issues: reproducing and reporting would already help.
    • Serge says that on Linux and MacOSX, he just needs someone to actually run the tests and report what they see (screen, console, etc). For example, there is a Mac test about Ctrl+W not working. This should be so trivial.
    • tonymec suggests that any enthusiastic user, even non-technical, should be able to do some testing (litmus?) and not be scared by technical language and such.
    • IanN suggests reaching out to the user community using the newsgroups and forums.
    • Serge to do a write up and send it to Ratty to propagate to the community.
      • Ratty is ***still*** waiting for Serge.

SeaMonkey Meeting Details

Thunderbird: 2012-10-02

Filed under: Posts — Tags: — Jesper Kristensen @ 11:00 pm

Agenda

  • Who’s taking minutes? –> Roland
  • Minute taking Schedule. Talk to Standard8 for schedule changes/additions.
  • Note: this meeting is for interactive discussion. Feel free to ask questions!

Friends of the Tree

Thanks to our Friend of the Tree. When adding someone to this section, please get their T-Shirt size, phone number (needed for shipping!) and send it to abourcier@mozilla.com that she can send them a shirt!

Thunderbird Development

Feature Work

  • Box.com referral codes have landed. Woo!
Instant Messaging
  • gtalk fixes to make it easier to configure IM for gtalk have landed in TB17

Google Summer of Code Projects

App Tabs for Thunderbird
  • Overview, Blog, bug 761727
  • Aimed at bringing the App-tab concept of Firefox into Thunderbird.
  • The basic design worked, but session persistence was difficult to implement.
  • Technical issues meant the project didn’t complete.
Improving GMail Integration
  • Overview, bug 721316
  • This work was focussed on improving Thunderbird’s integration with GMail accounts
  • Atul worked primarily on reducing the duplication of email downloaded onto the user’s hard drive
  • This patch landed last week on trunk
  • Atul would like feedback on how the disk space is performing for GMail users now (note: it won’t take effect for emails already downloaded).
Get ISPDB into Production
  • Overview
  • Many bugs have been fixed and the implementation is almost complete
  • Sancus will need to do a little bit of remaining work to get this fully deployed
‘No reply’ reminder for Thunderbird
  • Overview, Status reports, Commits
  • Seems that the code has mainly completed
  • Some good videos on the Weekly Status report page
  • Code is aimed at Lightning, the bug for landing it is here: bug 778533
  • Code currently has a ui-r- from mconley, and is awaiting code review from Fallen
GSoC Summary
  • Lessons to take away:
    • It is critical that students post patches regularly to Bugzilla, or up to their Github fork, regardless of their quality. This way, the mentor can keep tabs on progress, and the student has a back-up in case disaster strikes.
    • It is also important that students are aware of how long ui review and code review takes, and budget that in to their timeline (i.e. reviews along with fixes post-review and re-reviews take at least 4 or 5 days, it’s not the type of thing you can do in 48 hours; better yet is to do reviews of work in progress code)

Schedule and Progress

Extension of the week

  • This week it’s a theme airmail that gives thunderbird a very mail/mailman/airmail look.

Marketing Updates

  • Getting ready for TB16: New feature page on web, What’s New page, blog post…
  • New TB governance: keep on looking for Engagement volunters

Build / Release Update

  • Linux builders moving to CentOS 6 sometime this week. (bug 794378)
    • To pick up updated gtk & glib versions to match mozilla-central and mozilla-aurora
    • Hence, this will be on the TB 17 train
  • Mac OS X 10.8 unit test machines are being added to comm-central and try-comm-central (at least). (bug 786177)
    • Tests may be failing initially (possibly due to address book integration), and will need investigation.
  • bug 793628 – Produce Lightning Nightly builds during Thunderbird build process
    • No Lightning nightlies recently due to CentOS 6 build dependency. Working on a solution.

Web Update

  • Start Page updated
  • Still working on bedrock/mozillians stuff, not much to report yet
  • Audited ISPDB bugs — it looks like all the pieces are done except for the actual step of making the configs accessible to Thunderbird
    • Going to file bugs to get a staging server up from IT

Firefox OS

  • Feature freeze. Some features straggling in, being tracked heavily. Everyone else focusing on performance, stability and polish.

    • Linux: 22.34% -> 6.07%
    • Darwin: 11.85% -> 2.96%
  • Robcee is working to integrate the SPS profiler into dev tools – defaulting to JS only (bug 795268) http://cl.ly/Jloc

GFX

  • Images are now downscaled using a high-quality scaling algorithm (bug 486918).
    • This is disabled on mobile, where we worry about speed/multicore abilities.
    • It’s also disabled on OS X, which has high-quality downscaling built in.
    • There have been some regressions (crashes mostly), but we hope to keep it on for Fx 18.
  • Q4 GFX goals; important parts:
    • Deliver a D3D10 OMTC implementation for the Windows Metro product.
    • Work on OMTC for other platforms.
    • Work on the Azure project to improve drawing performance.
    • All of this is subject to B2G project needs.

JS

  • Work week in Mountain View – October 22nd through October 26th.

Layout

  • CSS3 Flexbox implementation landed: bug 666041
    • Currently disabled via a build flag by default, pending followups for correctness & conformance with later-game spec-changes. (tracked in bug 783409)
    • Soon to be controlled by a pref instead of build flag (bug 796212), so that nightly testers can turn it on.

Media

  • Most remaining pieces of WebRTC are about to land (most are r+ already)
    • DataChannels and SCTP
    • PeerConnection DOM
    • media/mtransport
    • media/webrtc/signaling
  • Initial landing will be preffed-off by default; we hope to pref-on for FF19

WebAPI

  • majority of work landed for B2G feature freeze
  • sms:, tel:, and mailto: URI schemes landed

Identity

We’ve got a B2G implementation plan for ID (and Payments).

Stability Report

Desktop

18.0a1 Nightly

  • bug 795594: Extremely huge (startup) crash spike with Windows 64bit, probably MS compiler issue with PGO, bug 795748 turned off PGO for Win64 for the moment to fix for now.
    • Made us aware that running no tests at all for Win64 means that we don’t even check if builds start up, despite us having quite a few Nightly users on Win64.
    • Discussion brought up that while we’re running tests for tier-1 by-checkin builds (and implicitly testing startup through them), we’re not gating pushing Nightlies (or daily Aurora builds) and their updates on running any tests on those builds and therefore can push updates that don’t even launch.
  • Unassigned new crashers: bug 795728 (GFX, probably from DLBI landing), bug 771407 (layout, recurring DLBI regression), bug 795819 (layout, probably from DLBI landing)
  • bug 795940 is a new crash that has a patch up for review, probably also fixes bug 795942.
  • bug 793175 is a high-rank topcrash (#2/#3 depending on the view) with a reviewed patch up, but not landed and no comment for a week. bug 758531 is probably a duplicate.
  • bug 795829 crash in mozilla::layers::Layer::CalculateScissorRect
  • bug 795826 crash in mozilla::`anonymous namespace’::ContainerState::Finish
  • bug 795819 crash in mozilla::FrameLayerBuilder::BuildContainerLayerFor
  • bug 795749 crash in mozilla::FrameLayerBuilder::DrawThebesLayer
  • bug 795728 crash in mozilla::layers::ContainerLayer::DefaultComputeEffectiveTransforms

Beta

  • bug 795683 crash in mozilla::plugins::PStreamNotify::Transition with abort messages: “__delete__()d actor” or “corrupted actor state” mainly with FlashGot
  • bug 795675 crash in JSC::Yarr::interpret on JB
  • bug 795962 crash in F412627940
  • hangs dominate the landscape of Top 20 crashes in Beta 5

Aurora

  • bug 795104 crash in _VEC_memcpy | js_NewStringCopyN

Flash

  • New labs version of Flash was released on 9/26 – version 11.5.x

Mobile

Nightly :

  • 9 out of top 10 are startup crashes
    • mostly due to bug 790139 has better symbols; freetype font issue.

Aurora:

  • Aurora crash rate seem to have spiked up a little
  • bug 777460, bug 791441 are on the rise in Aurora
  • lots of libxul crashes. Not sure what to do with them as of yet.

Beta:

  • Crashes are almost as good as Release crashes. Because the ADU are lower comparatively to Release, Naoki believe that the crash rate may be lower in the release channel once beta is pushed to release.

Release :

QA:

  • a lot more libxul crashes are shown at the bottom of nightly and other channels which is disconcerting.
  • bug 752828 looking at the patch from bug 741224, it might be helpful to get the API levels for the crashers?
    • Need STR from QA.
  • bug 750217 is not fully fixed.

Monitoring:

See Mobile Notes for Mobile specific Socorro notes

B2G

  • B2G crashes are starting to show in socorro!
    • We still need to get symbols for these crashes to make them useful (which requires builds coming from releng infrastructure).
  • Discussions on UX flow nearing final decision, will need implementation soon.
  • Work is ongoing on getting content crashes to work and getting annotations up – see dependencies of bug b2g-crash-reporting.
