Lightning 0.9 and Sunbird 0.9 are out!

The Calendar Project is proud to report, that the 0.9 release of Lightning and Sunbird has been completed and is now available via AMO and the Calendar Project website.

Five and a half months after the 0.8 release we move one step closer to our 1.0 release, currently planned for early 2009. Notable improvements of this release are:

  • Events spanning days now have a visual indicator indicating them as connected events
  • When reloading a remote calendar a progress indicator is now shown
  • The so-called “minimonth” (small calendar month in the upper left) has been given a visual overhaul
  • The calendar views (day, week, multiweek, month) have been given a visual overhaul
  • The today pane can now be displayed in calendar mode and task mode as well [Lightning-only]
  • CalDAV support and interoperability with various CalDAV servers has been improved
  • iMip/iTip support (support for email invitations) has been greatly improved [Lightning-only]
  • The application stability and memory consumption has been greatly improved
  • Lightning 0.9 is intended to be the last release for the Thunderbird 2 series. For the future we are planning to integrate Lightning fully into the upcoming Thunderbird 3 release [Lightning-only]
  • Icelandic, Romanian and Traditional Chinese were added as new languages. Unfortunately no builds in Macedonian or Turkish are available for 0.9
  • A full list of all the 397 changes that have gone into this release can be found on the Rumbling Edge website

Lightning 0.9 and Sunbird 0.9 are available for Windows, Mac OS X (universal builds), Linux, Solaris (Intel) and Solaris (Sparc) in 31 different languages including English.

Please use the following links to download the release:

Please read the release notes for Lightning 0.9 and Sunbird 0.9 before downloading.

Thank you again to all our developers, contributors, localizers, testers, and supporters. We would not be able to do this without your assistance!

  1. Thanks a lot for this good work !

  2. Guys, Keep up the great work. You are doing a fantastic job. Can’t wait for Tbird 3 with full groupware features built in…!

  3. On the main web page for Lightning you should now make Solaris as an available download rather than a link to contributed builds as well.
That is of course if Solaris is now in your build farm which it appears to be…

  4. Just FYI, the new download links for the nightly Windows builds are broken.
    It’s “win32-xpi”, not “windows-xpi”

  5. Why is there never a version on AMO for 64-bit Linux?? I would be happy to provide a build machine if that’s what is needed.

  6. Where does Sunbird store its profile data on Vista 64 bit? I have uninstalled the previous version of Sunbird, but still can´t run 0.9 since it seems to find an older calendar that it won´t use and the app quits. How do I remove all of the old data?

  7. toby,
getting someone with a machine is not the problem, there have been offers for this in the past. The problem is rather the amount of trust required to allow someone with a 64 bit machine to automatically upload nightlys or releases whatnot. I have contributed 64 bit builds that will be uploaded to the contrib folder probably today, but since we haven’t had any amount of testing on 64 bit boxen, I don’t think this build will make it on AMO — Sorry!

  8. Scott and Jay,
I fixed the links on the website. Thanks for pointing out those errors.

  9. Sorry but the upgrade from Thunderbird doesn’t work..
    Error whit the download…
    HELP!

  10. Coloring tasks and events was supossed to be an update of version 0.9 in Lightning, but I cannot found any option for configuring that.
I want to change the color of the events showed in the today panel depending on their category.
On the other hand, how can I assign multiple categories to one event?
    Thanks.

  11. Using add-ons manager on TB 2.0.0.16, after that I find lightning update, when click on installation button, I receive the -228 error.
    Any idea?

  12. I switched off task/today panel in calender view, dragged it back, then switched to mails and back to calendar, but task/today panel wasn’t there anymore. Now I always have to drag it in by hand. Sometimes it refuses to pop in, while dragging. Is this a bug or just an issue with my personal TB/LG configuration? Anyone experiencing the same problem?

  14. Great news, well done folks. Now, is any clever person out there able to package this as a Debian/Ubuntu .deb file? Thanks in advance

  15. What does the followin statement mean regarding next nightlies: “Lightning 0.9 is intended to be the last release for the Thunderbird 2 series” ?
Will the coming Lighting nightlies still work with TB2?
    Thanks

  16. And by the way, thanks and congratulations for the 0.9 release :)

  17. What does it mean “fully integrated into Thunderbird 3”? Does this mean, this is the first step to integrate all mozilla applications again into one suite? Or will there hopefully be a Thunderbird 3 without Lightning.
    Thomas

  18. @Fallen, thanks for the clarification. Is there anything that a user like myself, who isn’t familiar with the code but knows how to build binaries from source, can do to help the situation?

  19. just a random sunbird user out here…
wanted to say thanks and to congratulate you all on a great looking release. I’m very happy with it, and I’m excited about the future of the project. keep it up!

  20. Trying to update through Thunderbird results in an error:
Thunderbird could not install the file at http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/addons/2313/lightning-0.9-tb-win.xpi because; Download error -288
Maybe that file should be win32.xpi?

  21. hey all the new updates look great. Having an issue here hoping someone may be able to point me in the right direction.
when i try to accept an outlook 2007 invite i click accept and the box that shows which cal to import to is empty. I have 4 gcal cals setup and none are shown.
    any ideas.

  22. Automatic update of Lighting from 0.8 to 0.9 (on startup, or Tools/Add-ons/ Find updates) doesn’t work for me either (Win XP SP3. TB 2.0.0.16). I get the error “T-bird could not install the file at http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/addons/2313/lightning-0.9-tb-win.xpi because download error -228″. I checked the URL and that folder only contains versions up to 0.8. Presumably the file has not been put in that folder or it’s looking in the wrong one. It’s trying again every time I startup T-bird. I realise I could download manually, but can someone fix please for all users?

  23. Jed,
there are no known issues which are specific to MacOS X.
    Thomas,
the plan is to release TB3 only with an integrated Calendar (Lightning), but to make it easy to turn it off.
    Klint,
we will no longer support TB2 in the upcoming nightlies and will turn off our 1.8 branch build machines. The branch is (finally) history as far as we are concerned. It’s time to move into the now.

  24. Just upgraded to Lightning 0.9, but in Mail mode, the Today pane has lost the Task List.
In 0.8 it was great to have Folders, Mail, Today, and Task panes all on one screen. Is there a way to put this back in 0.9?
Thanks for all of the hard work on the update.
    -Don

  25. When I try to upgrade I get the following message (after it downloads):
“‘Lightning’ could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Thunderbird build type (Linux_x86_64-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.”
This is on a Ubuntu 8.04 system on a Thinkpad T61p laptop.

  27. @Simon
But TB3’s far from reliable as an everyday email app right no isn’t it? Well last time i tried about 1-week ago that was my impression. So what about people that still want to help drive development of lightning by testing it in their primary email client? (which for most will still be 2.xx)

  32. After updating to the latest version of sunbird on 2 PCs (both windows XP) all my links in the calendar events just disappeared on both machines. It is possible to have several attochments in the new 0.9 version, but how can I restore all my lost links?
I really surprised no one mentioned this before.

  33. @Simon:
In the Lightning 0.9 release source tarball on Mozilla FTP, there is one missing folder which is preventing it from compiling: /mozilla/security/nss-fips
It seems that this is supposed to hold the source of NSS 3.11.4 (judging from mozilla/client.mk line 262 in this tarball). So I downloaded ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/security/nss/releases/NSS_3_11_4_RTM/src/nss-3.11.4.tar.gz and extracted its mozilla/security/nss folder into mozilla/security/nss-fips in the Lightning source tree. This allowed the Lightning build to complete successfully. Can the source tarball be corrected to include these needed files?
FYI, I am building Lightning 0.9 from source so that it will work on Ubuntu. The .xpi available for download was for some reason built against libstdc++5 rather than libstdc++6 (which also happened with Lightning 0.8).

  34. Anthony Johnson

Found the task list in the today pane. The small arrow near the top switch between event, task and event & task modes!!

  36. Hi I tried to send a meeting invitations using the Lightning 0.9. The outlook users received the invites but my e-mail address do not show, and only my last name is shown. Any idea regarding this?

  37. Does anyone know how to assign multiple categories to one event?
On the other hand, how can we use the “coloring tasks and events” feature? I want to change the color of the events showed in the today panel depending on their category.
    Thanks.

  38. Great. Now support Gecko 1.9.

  39. To fix the issue in my TB, I un-installed lightning (and my Google Calendar provider).
I installed this version of lightning (http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/calendar/lightning/releases/0.9/contrib/linux-x86_64/) special for x86_64, and it worked fine. Then I reinstalled the Google Calendar provider. Happy user :)
