1.0 beta 1 is One Step Closer!

Finally! Since July, we have been working on bug 470430. After lots of testing, reviewing and frustration, we have finally checked in the bug’s patch. This bug is of quite central importance since we want to make sure that calendar data is not broken on an upgrade between versions, which was sometimes the case.

I would appreciate if everyone could take a look at the current nightlys to see if anything fails. Especially if you have an old profile (i.e from Sunbird/Lightning 0.8 or earlier) around, it would be nice to find out if upgrading from
that profile works flawlessly.

If you have ever used Sunbird, please also check if you have the following directory:

  • Windows Vista: C:Users<your username>AppDataRoamingMozillaExtensions{718e30fb-e89b-41dd-9da7-e25a45638b28}calendar-timezones@mozilla.org
  • Windows XP or earlier: C:Documents and Settings<your username>Application DataMozillaExtensions{718e30fb-e89b-41dd-9da7-e25a45638b28}calendar-timezones@mozilla.org
  • Linux: ~/.mozilla/extensions/{718e30fb-e89b-41dd-9da7-e25a45638b28}/calendar-timezones@mozilla.org
  • MacOS: ~/Library/Mozilla/Extensions/{718e30fb-e89b-41dd-9da7-e25a45638b28}/calendar-timezones@mozilla.org

If you do have this directory and it is empty, please report on bug 470430. Having it causes the upgrade process to fail, since the timezones files can not be found. My hopes are that this directory was created in error due to something in the development build process.

Now all we have left for our beta release is bug 494140, which will hopefully make it into the tree a bit sooner. Also, some locales need a few more strings. When all that is taken care of, then we can finally bring out release candidates for this beta release!

I’m looking forward to hearing from you and am excited that the beta is now one giant step closer.

UPDATE: We had a small regression, bug 526264. Upgrading from an older profile should work again after tomorrow’s nightlys.

  1. Just a small note of support. I am a recent user of Thunderbird/Lightning/Sunbird and just love it! Thank you so much for making it happen!

  2. I have been trying some of the nightlies lately, such as from 29-Oct-2009 and 04-Nov-2009.
    – These builds are not at all working with my calendar profile from 0.9 and just spitting out all sorts of errors. All three of my calenders are greyed out and not showing at all.
    – There are several visual display problems with the mini calendar. The black square border around it comes and go, shows up in full, shows half way, shows part way. It’s just not very consistent and it was not an issue with 0.9 release.
All three errors that pop up are the same:
    [Exception… “Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [mozIStorageConnection.executeSimpleSQL]” nsresult: “0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)” location: “JS frame :: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Sunbird/modules/calUtils.jsm -> file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Sunbird/calendar-js/calStorageCalendar.js :: anonymous :: line 219” data: no]
Well I’d love to test these things out this time around, I’m going to have to go back to 0.9 because none of this recent stuff works at all.

  3. Just in case it might matter (I don’t think it does), I have that {718e30fb- something directory and _it_ is empty. It had a datestamp “sometime in 2008” but the way I looked into it gave it today’s date so I can’t say exactly “when in 2008”. I’ve been using Sunbird nightlies on Linux (nightlies based on Gecko 1.8.1 until they stopped being rolled out and “Sunbird 1.0pre” nightlies since then) and not Lightning (which has only very recently become compatible with my SeaMonkey 2 mailer). In case it does matter, you can reach me by email, see at bottom of my welcome page.

  4. When are we going to see 64-bit linux support?
“Lightning” could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Shredder build type (Linux_x86_64-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.

I’ve tried the November 6 nightly build of Sunbird on Windows XP.
The upgrade of my profile, which includes two calendars, worked perfectly. I’ve been using this profile since Sunbird 0.3.
The directory …MozillaExtensions{718…b28} was empty before the upgrade, and is still empty after it.
    I’m looking forward to Sunbird 1.0 !

  6. There’s a critical issue with non-ascii characters in meeting organizer’s/attendee’s names. I can reproduce it with German umlauts and it causes problems in (at least) three use cases.
I noticed that even in the latest nightly this isn’t fixed yet. I’ll report it through bugzilla. It’s a blocker for me.

I did the same upgrade test on Linux (openSUSE 10.3), using the November 6 nightly build of Sunbird.
I upgraded a Sunbird 0.9 profile with two calendars.
    The upgrade worked perfectly.
The directory …/.mozilla/extensions/{718…b28} was empty before and after the upgrade.

  8. Dan, regarding 64bit nightlys, this is somewhat dependant on Thunderbird itself having 64 bit nightlys. We will surely have contrib builds with 64 bits for releases though.

  9. How can i help to make Farsi(Persian Pack) for Sunbird. It will contain Persian interface and Jalali calender.

  10. Ali,
just send me an e-mail to bugzilla (AT) babylonsounds (DOT) com and I’ll put in touch with the Persian localization community. We’d love to have a Persian (Farsi) localization.

  11. The latest nightly (16-Nov-2009) works wonderfully with my Zimbra 6.0.2 server with CalDAV, including FreeBusy. Congrats for the recent improvements (and Zimbra’s as well, for fixing whatever it was that they broke…)
I wrote in the forums, noting that the e-mail notices could use some actual content in addition to the appointment info, but otherwise, looking good!

  12. Any chance of getting nightly or at least contrib builds started up again for Solaris 10? I asked in the calendar google groups several months back and they suggested Sun no longer provided the servers for building them on anymore. Finally got around to posting the question to Sun in their forums and one of the responses I got back was to ask about it here :)
The Solaris 10 betas of Thunderbird 3 are leaps and bounds more useful than Thunderbird 2. Of course not useful enough without a Solaris 10 build of Lightning 1.0. Most recent Solaris 10 build of Lightning is still 0.9 or at least no 1.0 build for Solaris 10 I can find anywhere.

  13. Thanks a lot for your program. It is really nice!.
    Suggestions:
    – if you put 00:00 hours, note don’t appear in “single day view”(Windows Xp home, spanish version).
    – in other calendars, there is 2 options very useful:
    * notes (a little space, for example, to write my bank account or passwords and remember it).
    * no hour (different that “all the day”)
Palm Desktop by Access could give to you good ideas.
Congratulations again and apologizes for my terrible english.

  14. I’ve been following http://www.rumblingedge.com because they seem to post updates more frequently. It looks like all the blockers for Lightning 1.0rc1 are fixed.
No pressure or anything, but can we *pretty please* have a release? I’m like a little kid at Christmas jumping up and down…I’ve been waiting forever!!!

  15. this is for everyone. All you need is to know as much as you can about it. We offer you all the data we have (and it’s a lot) on this.

It seems to have updated fine but yet I still get the bug 470430.
