Lightning 1.0 beta1 now available for download

The Calendar Project is proud to report, that (finally) the 1.0 beta1 release of Lightning has been completed and is now available via AMO.

Nearly 16 months after the 0.9, this release is more than overdue and we’re more than happy to get the nearly 500 bugfixes and improvements into the hands of our users. Notable improvements of this release are:

  • Seamless integration into the new Thunderbird 3.0 user interface
  • The different modes (calendar view, task view) are now displayed in tabs
  • Lightning now supports SeaMonkey 2.0 as a host application
  • You can now define multiple alarms for a single event
  • CalDAV support and interoperability with various CalDAV servers have been improved
  • The application stability, performance and memory consumption have been improved
  • Estonian, Frisian, Galician, Hebrew, Indonesian, Punjabi, Sinhala, Tamil, Turkish and Vietnamese were added as new languages. Unfortunately no builds in Traditional Chinese, Slovenian, Swedish or Ukrainian are available for 1.0 beta1

Lightning 1.0 beta1 is available for Windows, Mac OS X (universal builds) and Linux in 37 different languages including English. Please read the release notes for Lightning 1.0 beta1 before downloading.

Thank you again to all our developers, contributors, localizers, testers, and supporters. We would not be able to do this without your assistance!

  1. i dont understand.
    when i surf to amo
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2313
via mozilla firefox 3.5.7 (running winxp) i cannot download the lightning xpi file manually to my desktop, as the amo system says:
lightning is not available for windows.
what the heck? what is wrong again, this time?
aaaaaaaaahrgh…… the calendar project is so to be pittied. so many bugs, so little developers, so many additional problems.
sweet jebuz, will this ever stop and become better?
    :(
only when i navigate to the “older versions” sublink that arrives at:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addons/versions/2313
there is a green button that apparently displays windows versions of xpi or any xpi in general at it leads me to:
    for windows for example:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/downloads/file/75384/lightning-1.0b1-tb+sm-win.xpi
    this is all really ridiculous?
who is in charge for this mess or not to say fuckup after all? the amo team? the infamous calendar and lightning guys?
    oh sigh…… really frustrated…. :(

  2. The AMO page says Lightning is not available for Windows. Er?

  3. PLEASE please add Linux x64 builds… if there is anything I could to to help out here, let me know.

  4. Thanks for the download-update info to the Jan-12th version, because the Jan-11th version was not compatible (version-info?) with the shredder Jan-12th version (nightly build)

  5. Congratulations!
    1. with which one “Provider for Google Calendar” should we use the lightning beta1 ???
    2. waiting for Linux x64 build…

it looks like this on my box:

    # Due to an internal database upgrade, the first startup after upgrading from 0.9 to 1.0 beta1 will be slow. This is a one-time issue and will not happen again. (a href=”https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=529326″>Bug 529326)

there is the “>” or “<” html code missing somewhere i guess.

  7. there is something wrong in the html code of the releasenotes, the last two bugzilla references seem to miss the “Bug 529326)
    # Lightning breaks viewing RSS feeds in Wide and Vertical Layouts (a href=”https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=523071”>Bug 523071)
    —————-
the greater than and less then html codes for are missing somwhere in the a href code.
please verify your html code in the relnotes.
    thanks lots.

  8. @html coder:
Thanks for spotting those errors. I just fixed them. The updated page should show up within the next 15 minutes.

  9. Thanks so much for all your hard work, it is really appreciated.
Lightning/Sunbird is in a really exciting place right now, and seems pretty well placed to move in some new and exiting directions.

  10. The Bug ID or the Link for “Lightning breaks viewing RSS feeds in Wide and Vertical Layouts (Bug 523071)” in the release notes seems to be wrong. When you click on it Bugzilla shows “Request (or) MyRequests url is not found in bugzilla home page”.
    Thank you!

  11. What is the proper “Provider for Google Calendar” file to use with 1.0b1?
Thanks for all the hard work.

  12. On the user side, I really don’t see that much improvement.e.g. why is it still not possible to edit multiple events at once? I hope that now that the transition to TB3 is accomplished, new features will be available soon..

  13. That’s great news! I was so longingly waiting for this moment and have been looking for news on this page nearly every day since christmas. The integration with tabs is really practical. But i still need time to test everything properly.
    Thank you so much!

  14. No support for sunbird version 0.9.. ? What do i have to do to get the add on in my sunbird

  15. Please fix the typo – s/diplayed/displayed (item #2, different views).

  16. Looks good so far – BUT: CalDAV calendars ceased working, when they’re using HTTPS and the host has a self-signed certificate, what is imo quite common in intra nets…
    (older “nightly build” did work…)

  17. After installing Provider for Google calendar does´nt work.

  18. Yes, awesome! Now I can stop Outlook again hahah

  19. Great job! Thanks a lot for your hear work!

  20. Great job! Thanks a lot for your hard work!

  21. The simples way to upgrade if you are still running TB2 and Lightning 0.9: Download TB3 –> it will ask you if you want to upgrade to Lightning to new beta. No need to manually download the new Lightning.
    Thanks for the developers!

  22. Is there a difference between 1.0b1RC and 1.0b1? I tried to check for updates via the Thunderbird add-ons dialog, but it didn’t fetch (unless it automatically updated when I did a nightly update – I use the Shredder/TB nightly builds).
Thanks for all your great work! I can more easily recommend Thunderbird to friends/family/coworkers when it has calendaring features.

  23. I just downloaded sea monkey 2.02 but need a calendar to go whit it. I founded lightning, but it does not install. Can someone help me?
    thanks,
    sonia

  24. It’s a good news.
However, if it’s a stable release, why do you name it “beta1” ?
In public mind, “alpha” and “beta” are not stable releases.
    “RC” is much better.

  25. Linux 64 bit builds are available at:
    ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/calendar/lightning/releases/1.0b1/contrib/linux-x86_64/
Thanks for this. The lightning.xpi installs and is functioning, it seems, but gdata-provider.xpi errors “not compatible with Seamonkey 2.0.3” on this linux x86_64 build Phillip Chee has provided for 2.0.3 build 1. Can this be modified to install/work? Thanks.

  26. Cant Download

When attempting to download for Windows from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2313 as directed to from http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/ using Firefox I get …. Missing argument: file_id
